For smoother The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild emulation, start with Cemu’s recommended graphics setup: use Vulkan if your GPU and driver support it, enable asynchronous shader compilation, and make sure Cemu is using your intended graphics device. Then check the game’s current FPS++ graphic pack. These steps can help, but none guarantees a particular frame rate; diagnose your PC’s bottleneck before changing resolution or buying hardware.
Start with Cemu’s graphics settings
- Select Vulkan if supported. In Cemu’s graphics settings, choose Vulkan when your graphics card and driver support it. Cemu recommends a GPU supporting OpenGL 4.5 or Vulkan 1.1; the recommendation is for the emulator generally, not a Breath of the Wild performance guarantee. See the Cemu Performance Guide.
- Enable asynchronous shader compilation. This setting is intended to reduce interruptions as shaders compile. It can improve smoothness during shader loading, but it is not a universal sustained-FPS boost. If you notice graphics issues, check the setting’s current description and report the problem with your Cemu version; behavior and trade-offs can vary between builds. Cemu’s official guidance covers the general recommendation.
- Confirm the selected graphics device. If your PC has integrated and discrete graphics, make sure Cemu is using the intended GPU rather than the less capable device.
Check Breath of the Wild’s FPS++ graphic pack
Cemu identifies Breath of the Wild’s FPS++ as an example of a graphic pack that can improve performance. Open Cemu’s Graphic packs window, use its community pack download function, and read the current notes and options for FPS++ before enabling or changing settings. Packs can change over time, so avoid relying on presets from older setup guides as if they were current. Cemu’s FAQ and Graphic Packs page explain the feature.
Check requirements—and their limits
Cemu’s general Performance Guide lists at least 4 GB of RAM as a minimum and recommends 8 GB or more. These are emulator-level recommendations, not a promise that Breath of the Wild will run smoothly on a system that meets them.

The Cemu game page warns that, as of Cemu 2.6, GPUs with 2–3 GB of VRAM or less may struggle in Hyrule Castle, where the emulator uses more VRAM. Treat this as a location-specific warning, not a universal cutoff or benchmark. The same page includes community compatibility reports, but differences in hardware and software versions make them unsuitable for predicting a particular PC’s frame rate.

Diagnose a slowdown before changing hardware
Before spending money, check which resource is actually limiting performance. Note your CPU and GPU usage, RAM and VRAM use, resolution, graphics driver, and Cemu version while reproducing the slowdown. The most useful fix depends on the cause:
- Shader stutter: Check that asynchronous shader compilation is enabled. Its purpose is to reduce shader-related interruptions, not to guarantee a higher sustained frame rate.
- GPU or VRAM limitation: Confirm the selected GPU and graphics API support. A compatible graphics card may be relevant if the current GPU lacks the required API support or runs out of VRAM; a GPU upgrade will not necessarily fix a CPU or memory bottleneck.
- Unclear cause: Change one setting at a time and compare the same scene under the same conditions. Community reports are not controlled comparisons, and Cemu’s published guidance does not establish a universal best configuration or expected FPS.
Choose changes by the trade-off
Performance adjustments involve different compromises: shader compilation settings target stutter, while graphics-pack options or resolution changes can affect performance and image quality. Compatibility depends on the GPU, driver, and graphics API, and hardware purchases must fit the rest of the PC. Cemu’s sources recommend settings and describe constraints, but do not provide controlled head-to-head results for every option.
