You can usually get more unplugged time from a powerful Windows laptop without making routine work feel sluggish by changing settings only when they matter: use Balanced or Best power efficiency on battery, adjust the display and idle timers, and reserve Best performance for demanding work when responsiveness takes priority. The right choices depend on your Windows version, laptop hardware and workload.

Choose a power mode that fits the task

In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Choose Balanced as a practical everyday compromise, or try Best power efficiency while unplugged if your usual apps remain responsive. Select Best performance when a demanding task needs the extra performance, particularly when plugged in.

Microsoft describes these modes as a choice between battery life, performance and a balance of the two; it does not give a general runtime-improvement percentage for switching modes. The option may be unavailable depending on the laptop, manufacturer or selected power plan. If the path differs on your computer, search Settings for “Power & battery.” Microsoft’s power mode guide explains the setting.

Review Energy recommendations before changing several settings

Windows 11’s Energy recommendations brings together suggested changes that can reduce power use. Open it from Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations, then assess each suggestion rather than applying everything automatically. Recommendations can include screen brightness and when the display turns off or the device sleeps. What appears depends on the device, its power state and supported hardware or sensors. See Microsoft’s explanation of Energy recommendations.

#1 Best Overall

Make the display and idle time work for you

Lower brightness to a comfortable level

The display is often a useful place to start: reduce brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable for your work. The ideal setting depends on lighting and the screen itself, so prioritize readability rather than forcing it to minimum.

Shorten screen-off and sleep timers on battery

In Settings > System > Power & battery, review the screen and sleep timeouts and choose shorter intervals for battery use if they suit your routine. This limits power spent on a screen or system left idle. Keep in mind that a shorter screen-off timer may interrupt reading or presentations, while sleep can pause background activity.

Consider a lower refresh rate

If Windows offers a refresh-rate setting and smoother motion is not important for the current task, try a lower rate. Microsoft notes that a higher refresh rate makes motion smoother but uses more power. This is a visual tradeoff, not a universal recommendation; some laptops do not expose the setting, and some uses benefit noticeably from a higher rate. Microsoft’s battery-saving tips describe display adjustments.

Find apps using battery in the background

Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and check which apps have used the most battery. If Windows provides a background-activity control for an app, restrict it only when you do not need its background updates or notifications. The control is not available for every app, and restricting activity can delay syncing or alerts.

Airplane mode is another optional measure only when you do not need wireless connectivity. It disables internet, Bluetooth or other wireless communications, so it can disrupt connected devices and services.

Use Energy Saver when you need extra time

Windows 11 Energy Saver can turn on automatically at a battery level you choose, or you can switch it on manually when you want to conserve power. Find its controls under Settings > System > Power & battery. Microsoft says Energy Saver manages system processes and power use for a balance between performance and longer battery life; its impact varies with the workload. Scheduling it lets you keep a more responsive mode for ordinary use before the battery reaches your chosen threshold.

For workloads that need sustained performance

Rendering, gaming and other demanding work can draw more power when the laptop is working harder. A power-saving mode may reduce responsiveness or lengthen the task. Use the mode that meets the task’s needs, and switch back to a more efficient setting when that work is done. There is no single setting that preserves maximum performance while eliminating the power cost of demanding workloads.

Protect long-term battery capacity

Short-term runtime and battery health are different issues. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with use and age, and high temperatures can speed deterioration. Microsoft recommends avoiding frequent deep discharges and keeping the charge at a moderate level—roughly 20%–80% when practical. These habits may slow degradation; they cannot restore capacity already lost. Smart charging may help manage charging, but availability depends on the laptop. Details are in Microsoft’s battery care guidance.

If runtime has fallen unexpectedly, Windows’ built-in battery report can help you inspect battery capacity and usage history. In an administrator Command Prompt, run powercfg /batteryreport; Windows reports where it saved the HTML file. Interpret the report alongside the laptop’s age and usage rather than treating one reading as a diagnosis or a reason to replace a battery.

Note for Windows 10 users

Some power and battery options also exist in Windows 10, but labels and paths can differ from Windows 11. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 laptop should not be assumed to continue receiving free security fixes. For current menu details, refer to Microsoft’s Windows support pages and search Settings if a path does not match.
