For longer runtime on a Lenovo laptop, start with Windows’ power-efficiency settings, reduce display and background-app use, and check which programs are draining the battery. If the laptop usually stays plugged in, use a Lenovo Vantage charge threshold if your model supports one. These steps can reduce power use, but they cannot restore capacity lost through battery aging.
Choose the right goal: more runtime or less battery wear
Battery runtime is how long the laptop runs on one charge; battery health is the battery’s capacity over time. If you need to work away from an outlet, prioritize power savings and charge fully before leaving. If the laptop is connected to AC most of the time, a supported charge threshold can limit how long it sits near full charge.

Adjust Windows power settings
Set power mode to efficiency
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and choose Best power efficiency when battery life matters more than peak performance. Microsoft describes the available modes as a balance between efficiency and performance; choose Best performance for demanding work when plugged in or when speed matters more than runtime. Some PCs do not show every mode, and a custom power plan may affect which choice is available. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing Windows power mode.

Open Settings > System > Power & battery and enable Energy saver. Where available, use Energy recommendations to review individual power-saving adjustments. Energy saver can reduce background activity and dim the display; Windows can also switch it on below a battery level you choose. Windows 10 may call the feature Battery saver and use a different settings path. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, so it no longer receives free security updates. Reduce display and idle power
- Lower screen brightness to a comfortable level; a bright display can use substantial power.
- Under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts, shorten the time before the display turns off and the laptop sleeps. Wording can vary by Windows version.
- If your laptop has a high-refresh-rate display, select a lower refresh rate for ordinary work that does not need smoother motion.
- On supported OLED displays, dark mode may reduce display power. This benefit does not apply equally to every screen type.
Find apps and wireless features using battery
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage to identify apps consuming power. If an app allows background restrictions, limit its activity when delayed notifications or syncing are acceptable. For apps with custom graphics preferences, select a power-saving option when performance is not critical. Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth only when you do not need them; use Airplane mode when no wireless connection is required.
Use Lenovo Vantage charge controls when available
Open Lenovo Vantage and review battery details and health. On supported laptops, the device’s power or battery settings may include a charge threshold or Conservation mode. Availability and menu names differ among ThinkPad, IdeaPad, Legion, LOQ, and other product families, so consult the guide for your exact model if the control is missing. Lenovo provides a Vantage charge-threshold demonstration and model-specific Conservation mode guidance.

For a laptop that remains connected to AC, Lenovo’s general battery guidance recommends an upper charge limit of 80% or less. A 2025 LOQ user guide describes Conservation mode maintaining 75%–80% on the listed LOQ models; that range is not universal across Lenovo laptops. When you need a full day away from an outlet, switch to normal or rapid charging if your model supports it. See the 2025 LOQ user guide.
If charging stops around 55%–60%, check Vantage for Conservation mode or a custom threshold before assuming there is a fault. Disable the limit when you need a full charge. Some systems may also pause charging between about 95% and 100% as a battery-protection behavior; exact thresholds vary by model. Lenovo discusses these controls in its Conservation mode guidance.

Check battery health before replacing it
Check battery health in Lenovo Vantage. Windows can also create a battery report: open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run powercfg /batteryreport. Follow the file path printed by Windows to open the HTML report, then compare design capacity with current full-charge capacity and review the history. A single reading is not, by itself, proof that the battery has failed. If the laptop has trouble sleeping, Lenovo also documents an energy report using powercfg -ENERGY. If the battery percentage is clearly inaccurate or the laptop shuts down unexpectedly while showing charge remaining, Lenovo’s Battery Gauge Reset may help the battery-management system relearn capacity. It can improve the accuracy of the displayed estimate, not actual runtime. Lenovo says modern lithium-ion batteries do not need to be fully discharged to maintain runtime. Do not use routine deep discharges as battery care.

When battery wear may justify service or replacement
Lenovo says a typical user may notice reduced runtime after 12–18 months of consistent use; this is a general observation, not a lifespan guarantee. Consider service or replacement if runtime no longer meets your needs or Vantage reports poor health. Batteries are model-specific: verify the exact laptop model or Lenovo battery part number and check the user guide to see whether the battery is a customer-replaceable unit (CRU). Lenovo recommends compatible Lenovo batteries and says non-CRU batteries should be serviced by authorized technicians. Start with Lenovo’s battery guidance and your model’s user guide.
Store the laptop for an extended period
For storage longer than four months, Lenovo recommends disconnecting the battery from a power source, storing it at no more than 40% charge, and recharging it to 40% every four months to account for natural discharge. What to expect from these changes
Windows settings and Vantage controls can help reduce consumption or limit time spent at a high charge, but the gain depends on the laptop, display, workload, and battery condition. There is no universal number of extra hours for an unspecified Lenovo model. If capacity has physically declined, power settings cannot restore it.
