The biggest quality improvement available on Apple TV 4K is enabling Lossless, then leaving the Apple TV’s audio format on Auto so it can send the best uncompressed format your television, receiver or speakers support. Open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality, choose Lossless, and set Dolby Atmos to Automatic if you have compatible equipment. Apple TV 4K supports Apple Music Lossless up to 24-bit/48 kHz; it does not support Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz.

These settings cannot create detail that is absent from a song, and they cannot overcome weak TV speakers, an incompatible receiver or a faulty HDMI handshake. Use the guide below to match the format to your equipment, avoid unnecessary re-encoding, and troubleshoot the connection when playback is silent or unstable.

What you can actually improve on Apple TV

Apple TV 4K offers two relevant Apple Music quality choices: High Quality AAC and Lossless ALAC. Lossless preserves the source audio without the data compression used by AAC, but the Apple TV 4K implementation is limited to 24-bit/48 kHz. That is a format ceiling, not a promise that every song will be delivered at that resolution. Apple says support depends on the individual song, network conditions and speaker capability.

Dolby Atmos is a separate presentation format. It can provide a multichannel or spatial mix for supported songs when the entire audio chain—Apple TV, receiver or HomePod, speakers and television connection—supports it. Atmos is not automatically “better” than stereo Lossless; it is a different mix, and your room and speakers determine whether you prefer it.

Apple TV’s Audio Format control determines how the box communicates with the connected equipment. In most systems, Auto is the correct choice because it selects the best format the equipment reports that it can handle and sends uncompressed audio. Selecting a compressed compatibility mode simply because it is available can reduce the signal quality or remove multichannel capability.

There is no documented setting that makes every track louder or guarantees an audible difference for every listener. Lossless, Atmos and a cable replacement should be treated as format and reliability decisions, not as guaranteed sonic upgrades.

Recommended settings at a glance

Goal Apple TV setting What it does When to use it
Preserve Apple Music audio data Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality > Lossless Uses ALAC lossless playback up to 24-bit/48 kHz on Apple TV 4K. Use when your Apple TV 4K is current, connected by HDMI to suitable equipment, and the song is available in Lossless.
Choose the best output automatically Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format > Auto Chooses the best format supported by the connected television or receiver and sends uncompressed audio. Use for most HDMI receiver, soundbar and home-theater systems.
Use two-channel stereo Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format > Stereo Only Sends uncompressed two-channel PCM. Use with a stereo amplifier, stereo speakers or another setup that cannot use multichannel audio.
Maintain compatibility with older equipment Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format > Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 Re-encodes audio as compressed Dolby Digital 5.1. Use only when the equipment cannot accept Dolby Atmos or multichannel PCM.
Play supported spatial mixes Music settings > Dolby Atmos > Automatic Plays supported songs in Dolby Atmos when compatible HomePod, receiver or speakers are present. Use when your complete audio chain supports Atmos and you want the supported Atmos presentation.
Reduce volume differences Music settings > Sound Check Adjusts playback levels so songs play at roughly similar loudness. Use for consistent volume, not for higher fidelity.

Some choices appear only when the connected television or receiver reports that it supports them. The exact labels can therefore vary with your Apple TV model, tvOS version and HDMI equipment.

Enable Lossless on Apple TV 4K

1. Update tvOS

Install the latest tvOS version available for your Apple TV 4K before changing the Music options. Apple’s lossless instructions specify current tvOS. An update also ensures that the labels and compatibility behavior match the current support documentation.

2. Use the required HDMI path

Apple specifies connecting Apple TV 4K to an AV receiver with an HDMI cable for its lossless setup. In a receiver-based system, connect Apple TV 4K to an appropriate HDMI input on the receiver, then connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the television. If your system routes Apple TV through a soundbar or directly through the television, the equipment must still be capable of accepting and passing the format you select.

3. Select Lossless

  1. From the Apple TV Home Screen, open Settings.
  2. Choose Apps, then select Music.
  3. Open Audio Quality.
  4. Select Lossless.

On Apple TV 4K, Apple describes this as ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz. Do not advertise or expect Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz on this device. Apple’s support page states: “Apple TV 4K currently doesn’t support Hi-Res Lossless (sample rates greater than 48 kHz).”

Lossless is not an upscaler. If a particular recording is not offered in Lossless, the setting cannot turn its available AAC stream into a true lossless master. Availability can also change with network conditions and with the capabilities of the speakers or receiver.

Set Audio Format to avoid unnecessary processing

Auto: the normal choice

Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and choose Auto. Apple says Auto decodes the best format supported by the connected equipment and sends uncompressed audio. This allows a capable receiver or sound system to handle stereo PCM, multichannel PCM or another supported format without forcing a lower common denominator.

Stereo Only: for a genuinely two-channel system

Stereo Only sends uncompressed two-channel PCM. Choose it when the system is intentionally stereo—for example, a two-channel amplifier and pair of speakers—or when multichannel negotiation causes problems. It is not an upgrade for a surround system; it deliberately limits output to two channels.

Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1: a compatibility fallback

Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 re-encodes audio as compressed Dolby Digital 5.1. It is intended for equipment that does not support Dolby Atmos or multichannel PCM. Because it adds compression and can remove newer multichannel options, do not select it as a general “better sound” mode. Use it when the receiving device requires that format or when it is the only way to restore compatible playback.

If a format option is missing, first check whether the television or receiver supports it. Apple notes that some choices are shown only when the connected equipment reports the relevant capability.

Turn on Dolby Atmos only when the whole chain supports it

  1. Open Settings on Apple TV.
  2. Go to Apps > Music.
  3. Set Dolby Atmos to Automatic.

With Automatic selected, supported Apple Music songs can play in Dolby Atmos through compatible HomePod speakers, an AV receiver or other Atmos-capable speakers. The song must have an Atmos version, and every link in the signal path must pass it. A stereo-only amplifier or television speaker system cannot reproduce the full multichannel presentation even if the menu offers the option.

Atmos and Lossless address different parts of playback. A song may have a lossless stereo version, an Atmos version, both or neither. The track’s availability, your network and your equipment determine which version is actually delivered. Listen for the result you prefer rather than assuming that the presence of an Atmos badge makes it universally superior.

Use Sound Check for volume consistency, not fidelity

Apple Music’s Sound Check feature automatically adjusts songs so they play at roughly similar levels. Turn it on in the Music app settings if frequent jumps between quiet and loud tracks are the problem. It is a loudness-matching function; it does not increase the resolution of AAC or Lossless audio and should not be presented as a sound-quality enhancement.

Match the setting to your equipment

System Starting configuration Important limitation
Apple TV 4K and AV receiver with HDMI Lossless enabled; Audio Format Auto; Dolby Atmos Automatic if the receiver and speakers support it. The receiver, HDMI path and speakers must report and pass the desired format.
Apple TV 4K and stereo amplifier or two speakers Lossless enabled; Audio Format Stereo Only or Auto if Auto correctly negotiates two-channel PCM. There is no multichannel Atmos reproduction in a two-channel system.
Apple TV 4K and compatible HomePod arrangement Lossless enabled; Dolby Atmos Automatic for supported songs; leave Audio Format Auto. Only supported songs and a compatible HomePod configuration can play Atmos.
Apple TV 4K and soundbar Lossless enabled; Audio Format Auto; Atmos Automatic if the soundbar and its HDMI connections support Atmos. Soundbar model, television return-audio support and HDMI routing determine what arrives.
Apple TV connected to television speakers Try Lossless and Audio Format Auto; use Stereo Only if the television requires two-channel PCM. Television speakers may not reveal a clear difference between AAC and Lossless, and they cannot reproduce a full Atmos field.
Older receiver that accepts only Dolby Digital 5.1 Use Audio Format Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 only if Auto or multichannel PCM is unsupported. The signal is compressed and newer Atmos or multichannel PCM capability is unavailable.

Equipment capability matters more than buying a new accessory. If an existing receiver, speaker system and HDMI cable work reliably and support the format you want, replacing them solely to seek a guaranteed audible improvement is not supported by Apple’s documentation.

Check the song, network and playback path

The track may not have the format you selected

Lossless and Atmos are catalog attributes, not universal properties of every Apple Music item. A setting can be enabled while a particular song remains available only in AAC or stereo. Confirm the song’s own format indicator in the Music app and test more than one known-supported track before diagnosing the hardware.

Network conditions can affect availability

Apple states that Lossless support depends partly on network conditions. A congested or unstable connection can prevent the intended stream from loading consistently. Keep Apple TV on a stable network, allow playback to buffer, and test again before changing receiver settings.

Speakers determine what you can hear

Lossless delivery does not guarantee a perceptible change through every speaker. Small television speakers, a heavily processed soundbar or a receiver using its own mode may mask differences. That does not mean the setting failed; it means the final transducer and processing chain limit what reaches your ears.

Troubleshoot no sound, dropouts or an unexpected format

Use these steps when changing quality options produces silence, intermittent audio or a format your receiver does not recognize. They are diagnostic measures, not universal sound-enhancement settings.

  1. Check the HDMI connections. Reseat the cable at Apple TV, the receiver or soundbar, and the television. Confirm that the receiver input and television input match the ports you selected in their menus.
  2. Try another compatible HDMI cable. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance identifies a Premium High Speed cable for HDMI 2.0 and an Ultra High Speed cable for HDMI 2.1. Replace a cable to address instability or compatibility—not because a premium cable automatically improves the sound of a working connection.
  3. Bypass an HDMI switch or receiver temporarily. Connect Apple TV directly to the television. If audio returns, the switch, receiver input, cable path or handshake is the likely point of failure. Reintroduce components one at a time.
  4. Return Audio Format to Auto. A forced format can be unsupported by the receiving device. Auto lets Apple TV negotiate the best reported format.
  5. Use Stereo Only as a diagnostic test. If two-channel PCM works while multichannel modes are silent, the problem is likely in multichannel negotiation or receiver compatibility rather than Apple Music itself.
  6. Use Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 only when required. If an older receiver cannot accept multichannel PCM or Atmos, this compressed fallback may restore sound. Treat it as a compatibility solution.
  7. Review Continuous Audio and related audio controls. Apple’s no-sound guidance includes changing audio format or Continuous Audio settings when troubleshooting a missing signal. Restore your preferred format after the fault is isolated.
  8. Try Audio Mode 16 bit when Apple’s troubleshooting case applies. Apple lists setting Audio Mode to 16 bit as a diagnostic step for certain audio problems. It is not a recommendation to down-convert a normally working Lossless setup.
  9. Check processing in the television and receiver. Disable or change an input mode that mutes, overrides or incorrectly decodes the incoming signal, then test again.

Apple’s detailed troubleshooting guidance is available in If your Apple TV has no sound. For format behavior, see Change audio settings on Apple TV 4K.

Should you buy a cable, receiver or speakers?

HDMI cable

An HDMI cable suitable for an Apple TV 4K-to-AV-receiver connection is justified when the current cable is damaged, unstable or incompatible with the HDMI standard your equipment requires. Apple’s guidance distinguishes Premium High Speed cable for HDMI 2.0 and Ultra High Speed for HDMI 2.1. A new cable does not improve sound quality when the existing compatible cable already carries a stable signal.

AV receiver or speakers

Consider new audio hardware only when your current equipment is the limiting capability—for example, it cannot accept multichannel PCM, Dolby Atmos or the HDMI connection required by your intended layout. Buy for a documented compatibility need and for the speakers you actually want, not for an unsupported promise that Lossless alone will transform any system.

Final setup checklist

  • Apple TV 4K is running the latest available tvOS.
  • Apple TV 4K is connected through a stable, compatible HDMI path.
  • Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality is set to Lossless when the song and network support it.
  • Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format remains on Auto unless your equipment requires Stereo Only or Dolby Digital 5.1.
  • Dolby Atmos is set to Automatic only when compatible speakers or a receiver and supported songs are available.
  • Sound Check is enabled only if matching loudness between songs is your goal.
  • You have tested a supported track and confirmed that the receiver or speaker system is receiving the intended format.
