For a web application, initialize error capture before feature code runs, collect uncaught exceptions and unhandled promise rejections, and explicitly report important failures that application code catches. Give events a stable release identifier and environment, add only the diagnostic context needed to investigate them, and upload source maps that match the production bundles before deployment. Treat browser reports as best-effort evidence—not a guarantee that every failure will reach your monitoring system.
Decide which client-side failures need action
Instrumentation is only useful if the team can distinguish an actionable fault from an expected condition. Define severity and ownership around your own user journeys and service objectives; there is no universal criticality taxonomy in the cited guidance.
- Prioritize uncaught exceptions that break a route or essential interaction.
- Include rejected operations that leave a critical workflow unusable, even if application code catches the rejection.
- Watch for recurring failures or a rise in affected users after a deployment.
- Keep expected, handled conditions out of high-priority alerts unless they indicate a real user-impacting problem.
Agree on who investigates each alert and what qualifies as a regression before turning on broad notifications. Otherwise, event volume can obscure the faults that matter.
Initialize capture before application features
Put the selected browser SDK’s initialization near the application bootstrap, before route and feature modules execute. Configure automatic capture for uncaught errors and unhandled promise rejections, then test that behavior in the production build. A browser SDK such as the Sentry JavaScript SDK is one possible implementation; choose against your framework and browser support, privacy needs, release workflow, and backend correlation requirements.

Automatic capture does not cover every important failure. When code catches an exception to recover, display a fallback, or preserve the interface, explicitly report it at the boundary if the underlying failure still needs operational attention. Avoid reporting the same exception both automatically and manually. Also identify separate execution contexts—such as workers—and verify their SDK initialization and capture requirements; a worker may need its own initialization rather than relying on the page’s setup.
Attach context that helps diagnose without collecting too much
Make each event useful for comparing incidents and locating regressions. Start with a stable release or version, deployment environment, route or screen, and browser/runtime details. Add a request or trace correlation identifier when one is available. Breadcrumbs or bounded event history can help reconstruct a user journey, but collect them selectively.

- Do not collect secrets, form contents, or raw request and response bodies by default.
- Apply filtering and redaction before transmission, and limit access to telemetry and its retention period.
- Review any session replay feature separately for consent, masking, and privacy. Sentry describes its web replay as a DOM-based reconstruction rather than a pixel recording and documents server-side scrubbing in its Session Replay FAQ.
OpenTelemetry’s client-side application guidance emphasizes constraints such as variable device resources and connectivity, as well as data minimization, consent management, redaction, sampling, and trace correlation. Apply those controls to the actual data your application emits, not just to the SDK’s default settings.
Make releases and source maps part of deployment
Use the same stable release identifier in the client bundle and the telemetry system so events can be associated with a deployment. In CI, generate the production artifacts, upload the matching minified files and source maps with release metadata, and only then deploy those assets. The Sentry release API documentation describes release correlation, and its source-map troubleshooting guide explains why artifact matching and upload timing matter. A later upload does not retroactively make already captured events resolve to original source locations.

- Build the exact production bundles that will be served.
- Generate and upload the corresponding source maps and release metadata.
- Deploy the matching bundles, using the same release identifier in client telemetry.
- Decide whether source maps should be publicly accessible. If that is not intended, use an access-control or artifact-removal approach; the Sentry esbuild guidance describes deleting uploaded maps or denying public access as options.
- Trigger a test event from a production build and confirm that it resolves to the expected original file and location.
Development and watch builds can behave differently from production bundles, so a successful local stack trace is not enough to verify this pipeline.
Keep capture efficient and account for delivery failures
Browsers run on devices and networks the application team does not control. Keep instrumentation’s CPU, memory, and network cost low; batch events where appropriate and buffer temporarily during offline periods if the chosen SDK supports it. Use sampling when volume requires it, while preserving a path for rare, high-severity issues. Set bounded retries, do not block user actions on telemetry delivery, and watch for drops or ingestion limits on the receiving side.

Do not treat a client report as a transactional record or proof that an operation succeeded or failed. The MDN Reporting API reference explicitly says report delivery is not guaranteed. Browser-side error reporting is diagnostic evidence, and critical application workflows need their own reliable server-side or transactional handling.

Use a workflow that fits the team’s browser requirements
OpenTelemetry’s JavaScript documentation currently calls browser client instrumentation “experimental and mostly unspecified.” That maturity caveat matters if you are considering it as the primary browser capture layer. A vendor SDK may provide a more integrated error and triage workflow; a standards-based setup may provide greater control and portability but can require additional collection, processing, and source mapping.

Compare options against the requirements that affect production operation:
| Decision area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Browser and framework maturity | Supported runtimes, framework instrumentation, and known gaps. OpenTelemetry’s current JavaScript browser status is described in its JavaScript documentation. |
| Capture coverage | Whether uncaught exceptions, unhandled rejections, and manually reported caught failures are covered. |
| Release diagnosis | How release identifiers, source-map uploads, and production artifact matching are handled. |
| Privacy and data handling | Redaction, consent controls, retention, access restrictions, and data residency. |
| Volume and resilience | Sampling, buffering, retries, event limits, and visibility into dropped events. |
| Operations and portability | Alert routing, issue ownership, backend trace correlation, data export, and the work and cost of running the pipeline. |
Choose based on verified support for your application and operating constraints rather than assuming that a single SDK or standard automatically provides a complete production workflow.
Add CSP reports when policy failures matter
Content Security Policy violations can reveal blocked scripts and policy configuration problems that do not necessarily appear as ordinary application exceptions. If those failures matter to your team, MDN documents configuring the report-to directive with an endpoint mapping supplied through the Reporting-Endpoints response header in its CSP report-to reference. Check support in the browsers used by your audience and configure the policy and collection endpoint deliberately. CSP reporting complements application exception capture; it does not replace it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsClose the loop with alert review
Alert on conditions that prompt a response, such as a new high-severity issue, a sharp increase in affected users, or a regression tied to a deployment. Route each alert to an owner, then track the issue through confirmation, fix, and verification in a later release. Review whether events are actionable and tune filters to reduce noise without concealing faults.
