Android can identify songs without Shazam: on Pixel phones, Now Playing can recognize nearby music automatically and show the result on your lock screen. On other Android phones, Google’s Search a song feature lets you identify music manually—including by humming, whistling, or singing.
Which Android song-recognition feature should you use?
Choose based on whether you want automatic recognition or a search you start yourself. Google documents Now Playing as a Pixel feature; its Android instructions for other phones use Song Search in the Google app.
- Pixel Now Playing: identifies nearby music automatically and can display a notification while your phone is locked or in use. It also offers ways to search manually and review recognized tracks.
- Google Song Search on Android: starts when you ask Google to search for a song. It can listen to music playing nearby or match a melody you hum, whistle, or sing.
Google does not document automatic Now Playing as a feature available on every Android phone. You do not need a Pixel to use the Google app’s manual song search.
How to set up automatic song recognition on a Pixel
- Install the Now Playing app from Google Play, following Google’s Pixel Now Playing instructions. Google says the feature may take up to 24 hours after download to become usable.
- Use one of the available entry points to start a search: the Now Playing app, Quick Settings, a widget, or the lock-screen shortcut. Once set up, Now Playing can also identify nearby music automatically.
- Open the app’s history to revisit recently identified tracks. From there, Google says you can search for a track, share it, favorite it, or open it in a connected music service when that service is available in the selector.
If you had an older version of Now Playing, Google notes that you may be prompted to download the newer app because the feature moved from Pixel settings into the app.

How to search for a song on any supported Android phone
- Open the Google app and tap the microphone in the search bar.
- Choose Search a song.
- Play the music near your phone, or hum, whistle, or sing the melody. Google describes these options in its Android Song Search instructions.
Google also lists Song Search access through Circle to Search, Quick Settings, a home-screen shortcut, and asking Gemini for the current song. Which entry points appear can depend on the device and feature availability; the Google app microphone flow is the documented starting point.
What happens to audio when Pixel Now Playing identifies music?
Google says Pixel uses an on-device music library to identify nearby songs. If that library does not recognize a track, the app may send a short digital audio fingerprint for cloud matching or additional song details. According to Google, it does not send raw audio or background conversations; fingerprints are used to recognize music and are not stored on Google’s server or shared with other Google or third-party services.

Google says shared usage and diagnostics can include information such as the percentage of times Now Playing recognizes music correctly, but its help page does not publish a recognition percentage. The cited support pages also provide no independently tested success rate or measured comparison with Shazam, so they do not establish which service recognizes more songs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to expect when a song is not recognized
Now Playing relies on its on-device library, and Google says cloud matching may be used when that library does not recognize a song. Neither Google help page promises that every track will be identified. If automatic recognition does not return a result, start a manual Song Search or Now Playing search while the music is playing; for a melody you remember, try humming, whistling, or singing it into Google Song Search.
