“Mountain cheese” alone does not prove that the milk came from a mountain region or that the cheese was made there. For cheese sold under EU rules, check whether the label uses the optional mountain product term or names a protected product such as a PDO, then verify the product’s own specification. These are distinct schemes, and their requirements are not interchangeable.
What “mountain cheese” means on a label
There is no single universal legal definition of “true mountain cheese.” The words mountain and alpine may be descriptive, but by themselves they do not establish a cheese’s origin or production method. The EU’s optional quality term mountain product has specific conditions for qualifying origin and processing. A protected designation of origin (PDO) or protected geographical indication (PGI), by contrast, protects a registered name under its own product specification. The European Commission explains the distinction between geographical indications and quality schemes.
For the EU term, Regulation (EU) No 665/2014 sets operational conditions concerning mountain-area origin, animal feed and, for processed products, processing. The rules include specified conditions under which certain qualifying milk products may be processed outside mountain areas; the term therefore does not mean every production step took place at high altitude. Read Delegated Regulation (EU) No 665/2014 on EUR-Lex.

How to check whether a cheese’s claim is verifiable
- Find the exact name and mark. Look for a registered name and a PDO or PGI mark, rather than relying only on words such as “mountain” or “traditional.” Check the name in the EU geographical-indication register or the applicable national registry. The Commission says registered names are protected against misuse. The Commission overview describes the schemes and registers.
- Identify which claim is being made. A PDO or PGI is not the same thing as the optional EU term mountain product. If a package uses the latter, look for the producer and origin information and assess the claim against the relevant scheme conditions. The Commission’s scheme overview and Delegated Regulation 665/2014 describe their different roles.
- Read the product specification. Check its defined geographic area, milk origin and treatment, feed or pasture conditions, where cheesemaking and ripening occur, and any required maturation or physical characteristics. A named cheese’s specification—not a general idea of mountain cheese—is the source for those details.
- Ask targeted questions if the label gives only generic wording. Ask where the milk was produced, what feed requirements apply, where the cheese was made, and which published standard verifies the claim. These are practical questions based on the criteria in the cited EU rules, not a universal legal test for every country.
- Check raw-milk status separately. A mountain-related claim does not establish that a cheese is made from raw milk. Look for that detail in the product specification or label.
What two protected mountain cheeses show
Product specifications illustrate why the name and its rules matter: two cheeses associated with mountain production can have different boundaries and requirements. The details below apply to these named products, not to every mountain cheese.
| Check | Allgäuer Bergkäse PDO | Vorarlberger Alpkäse |
|---|---|---|
| Geography and protected status | The European Commission identifies it as a PDO produced in the German Allgäu region; its PDO status requires production, processing and preparation within the specified region. Commission product profile | A 2023 Official Journal notice describes a hard cheese made on alpine pastures in its defined area. The notice is a product-specific specification, not a general definition. Official Journal notice |
| Milk and production details | The Commission profile describes raw cow’s milk from herds grazing on high pastures, heated below 40 °C before renneting. These details belong to this cheese’s profile. | The notice describes untreated, silo-free alpine raw cow’s milk. It links flavour to alpine vegetation, predominantly green feed and traditional artisanal production. |
| Maturation and form | The Commission profile reports four months’ ripening and a rind-matured round weighing 15–50 kg. It also reports 62% dry matter and a minimum full-fat content of at least 45–49%; these are profile figures for this cheese, not general standards. | Not stated in the cited 2023 notice. |
The European Commission’s Allgäuer Bergkäse profile and the Vorarlberger Alpkäse notice are useful because they give product-specific criteria. They do not establish that all mountain cheeses share the same milk treatment, feed, ripening period or shape.

How to compare named cheeses
Compare the specifications rather than assuming that a label word, a high-altitude origin or a protected status alone tells you which cheese is “more authentic.” Check:
Recommended Free Tools
- Protected status and boundary: Is the name registered, and what exact area does its specification cover?
- Milk: Where must it come from, and does the specification require raw, untreated or otherwise defined milk?
- Feed and pasture: Are there documented rules about grazing, feed or silage?
- Production locations: Where must cheesemaking, processing and ripening happen?
- Product characteristics: Are there required maturation periods, shapes, composition or sensory features?
These criteria help explain what a particular cheese’s claim guarantees. They are not a single universal checklist that every country or every mountain-labelled cheese must satisfy.

- Great spread on bagels, toast, or crackers, mixed with herbs or spices for savory dips, sweetened with honey or jam for a dessert topping, or used in recipes where a lighter cream cheese texture is desired, like in cheesecakes or frosting.
Geographic limits to keep in mind
The rules described here are EU-specific. Other countries may define mountain areas, origin claims, protected names and certification differently. The EU framework does not establish a universal test for “mountain cheese,” nor does it show that generic mountain wording is unlawful in every jurisdiction. For an EU product, use the relevant registered name, scheme and specification; for a product sold elsewhere, check the rules that apply in its market.
