The current FTB OceanBlock 2 release requires Java 21 and lists at least 4 GB of RAM, with 6 GB recommended. To host it reliably, install the exact same pack release on the server and every client, use the matching installer from FTB’s server-files browser, allow the Java process through your firewall, and forward the Minecraft port if players connect from outside your home network. The currently listed 1.21.1 server release has ID 100482. These memory figures are starting points, not a guaranteed player capacity.

What you need before starting

OceanBlock 2 is a large modpack, so a dependable server depends on more than the amount of memory assigned to Java. Prepare the following before inviting anyone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A computer or hosted instance that can remain online while people play.
  • An SSD with free space for the server files, world data, logs, backups and future updates.
  • A stable operating system account with permission to create and write to a dedicated server directory.
  • Java 21 for the currently listed release. The FTB installer can supply an appropriate Java runtime; use that runtime unless the release notes for your chosen version say otherwise.
  • An administrator account for the FTB App and access to the official OceanBlock 2 server-files browser.
  • A fixed private IP address if the machine is behind a home router and will accept outside connections.
  • Permission to change firewall and router settings, or a hosting provider that performs those tasks for you.

Keep the server directory separate from your personal Minecraft instance. A separate directory makes permissions, backups, updates and rollback much safer.

Choose between self-hosting and managed hosting

Self-hosting gives you control over the machine and files. Managed hosting trades that control for a control panel and provider-operated infrastructure. Neither choice guarantees a particular number of players; actual capacity depends on CPU performance, loaded chunks, simulation distance, world activity and the other work running on the machine.

Upfront cost Usually requires an existing computer or a hardware purchase. Usually little or no hardware purchase.
Recurring fee Electricity, internet service and replacement parts are your responsibility. Monthly or recurring hosting charge; verify the current price for the exact plan.
Setup effort You install Java, the pack, firewall rules, port forwarding, backups and updates. The provider normally supplies a panel and basic installation workflow.
File and mod control Full access to scripts, configs, logs, worlds and operating-system settings. Access depends on the panel and provider policy.
Backups You design, schedule and test them. Check retention, frequency, restore controls and whether you can download a copy.
Latency Can be excellent for players near the home connection, but upload quality matters. Choose a data center close to most players and confirm network limits.
Privacy World and logs stay on equipment you control. Data is stored on the provider’s infrastructure.
Incident response You diagnose crashes, updates, hardware and network failures. The provider handles host hardware, while pack and configuration problems may remain yours.

FTB’s OceanBlock 2 page identifies BisectHosting as a hosting partner. If you choose a managed service, confirm its support for the exact OceanBlock 2 release, Java 21, the required loader, downloadable worlds, scheduled backups, restore testing, data-center location and current price before paying. A partner listing does not by itself establish a particular plan’s capacity or features.

Hardware that makes self-hosting practical

For a home server, prioritize a modern CPU with strong single-thread performance, expandable memory and SSD storage. Minecraft’s main server tick is sensitive to per-core performance, while mod loading, world saves and chunk generation also benefit from fast storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • CPU: Prefer high sustained single-core performance over a large number of slow cores. Extra cores are useful for the operating system and background services, but they do not replace fast tick processing.
  • RAM: Allocate only what the pack needs and leave headroom for the operating system, file cache and backup jobs. If the machine also runs databases, media services or containers, reserve their memory first.
  • Storage: Use an SSD rather than a mechanical disk. Keep free space for the world, region files, crash reports and several dated backups.
  • Network: Measure upload stability, not just advertised download speed. Every remote player receives world updates from your connection.
  • Power and noise: An always-on desktop, mini PC or rented instance may be more practical than a high-wattage gaming system.
  • Upgradeability: Empty memory slots, replaceable storage and a supported operating system extend the server’s useful life.

The official memory guidance is a baseline for allocation, not a player-count promise. Watch actual heap use and tick performance while your group explores and builds before deciding whether more memory is needed.

Self-host an OceanBlock 2 server step by step

1. Select one pack release for everyone

Open the FTB App and identify the precise OceanBlock 2 release your group will play. Record the version shown in the launcher. Do not let one player install the newest client while the server uses an older release; mod-loader and configuration differences can prevent the handshake from completing.

2. Download the matching server installer

Open FTB’s OceanBlock 2 server-files browser and select the server installer for that same release and your operating system. The current 1.21.1 listing is server release ID 100482. The server installer is not interchangeable with a client installation, and a different server release can contain different mods or configuration files.

3. Create a dedicated writable directory

Create a directory used only by this server, such as an OceanBlock2Server folder on the SSD. Give the account that will run the server read, write and execute permission. Avoid protected operating-system directories and locations synchronized by consumer cloud-storage software; file locking or partial synchronization can corrupt a live world.

  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.

  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

4. Run the FTB installer in that directory

Place the downloaded installer in the new directory and run it from there. FTB’s generic installer is designed for FTB modpacks and can download the required Java version. Let it finish downloading every library and pack file before attempting the first launch. If it reports an error, confirm that the installer matches the selected release and that the operating system architecture is supported.

5. Verify Java 21

For the current listed release, confirm that the launch script or panel points to Java 21. If the installer supplied a runtime, use that path rather than an unrelated system Java installation. A server may appear to start with the wrong Java version and then fail during mod loading, so check the startup log for the reported Java version.

6. Start once, accept the EULA only if you agree

Start the server once so it can create the world, configuration files and launch scripts. Stop it cleanly after generation. Open the generated EULA file and change the acceptance value only if you agree to the Minecraft license. Start again and wait for the log to report that the server is ready before connecting.

7. Set the heap and launch options

Open the generated launch script and set the initial and maximum heap deliberately. A typical starting pattern is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar server.jar nogui

The jar name in your generated script may differ, so preserve the installer’s actual filename and arguments. Treat the official floor as a minimum and the recommendation as a starting allocation, then leave additional memory for the operating system. Increasing the heap indefinitely does not cure a slow CPU, excessive view distance or a badly behaved mod.

Change the values only while the server is stopped. After each change, observe startup, garbage-collection pauses, operating-system memory pressure and the server log rather than relying on the configured number alone.

8. Configure server properties

Stop the server before editing server.properties. Set a recognizable server name, difficulty, view distance and simulation distance for your group. A private world should use a whitelist. Add player names through the server console or the appropriate operator command, and grant operator status only to people who need administrative commands.

Start with conservative view and simulation distances if the machine or connection is modest. Raising both values increases the amount of world data and entity activity the server must maintain for every player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Open the local firewall

Allow the Java server process, or the configured Minecraft TCP port, through the host operating system’s firewall. Restrict the rule to the server’s network profile where possible. Test from another device on the same local network before changing router settings; a local failure usually indicates the server, firewall or address rather than internet routing.

10. Give the server a fixed private address and forward the port

Reserve a fixed private IP for the server in the router’s DHCP settings, or configure a static address correctly on the machine. Forward the port shown in server.properties from the router’s external interface to that private address and port. Then provide remote players with your public address and port. Do not expose unrelated administrative ports.

If local connections work but remote players cannot reach the server, inspect the forwarding target, firewall rule and whether your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT. Carrier-grade NAT can prevent inbound forwarding; in that case ask the provider about a public IPv4 address or use a networking method that every participant understands and trusts.

11. Test with one client before inviting the group

Launch the identical OceanBlock 2 release in the FTB App on a client computer. Connect locally first, verify that blocks, recipes and machines load correctly, then test from an external network. Watch the server console while joining so you can distinguish a login, mod-list or network failure.

How friends join your server

  1. Each player installs the exact OceanBlock 2 release selected for the server through the FTB App.
  2. Each player uses the same pack version, loader and configuration files. A version mismatch can produce a mod-list or handshake error before the world loads.
  3. Players on the same home network connect to the server’s private IP and configured port.
  4. Players elsewhere connect to the public address and forwarded port you provide.
  5. Keep the whitelist enabled for a private group and add names before players attempt to join.
  6. If someone cannot connect, have that player report the exact error and timestamp while you check the server log; avoid changing several settings at once.

Never send the public address in a public forum if you do not intend to expose the server to unsolicited connection attempts. A whitelist reduces who can enter, but it does not replace firewall updates, backups or operating-system security.

Backups, updates and safe rollback

Stop the server cleanly before copying a world or changing the pack. Copy the world directory, configuration files and any scripts needed to reproduce the launch. Add a date and the pack version to the backup name. Keep at least one copy off the server machine so a disk failure, ransomware incident or accidental deletion cannot remove every copy.

Before an OceanBlock 2, loader or Java update:

  1. Announce a maintenance window and stop the server normally.
  2. Copy the complete world and configuration to a dated backup location.
  3. Install the new server release in a separate directory instead of overwriting the working installation.
  4. Point the new launch script at a test copy of the world and confirm that it reaches the ready state.
  5. Have one client install the identical new release and test inventories, dimensions, machines and player data.
  6. Switch the live server only after the test succeeds, retaining the previous directory for rollback.

Test restoration periodically on a separate directory. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption, not a recovery plan.

Performance tuning without guessing

Measure before changing settings. During normal exploration and a busy building session, observe heap usage, CPU utilization, disk activity and the server’s tick or watchdog messages.

  • Reduce view distance when chunk loading or network upload is the bottleneck.
  • Reduce simulation distance when mobs, machines or moving entities consume too much tick time.
  • Limit simultaneous exploration of new terrain; concurrent chunk generation can create long pauses even when idle performance is good.
  • Close competing workloads such as indexing, video transcoding or large backup compression jobs during play.
  • Move the world and Java runtime to the SSD if logs show storage waits.
  • Add memory only when monitoring shows the heap is genuinely exhausted and the operating system still has headroom.

Do not treat a larger heap as a substitute for a faster CPU. Excessive allocation can also make garbage-collection pauses longer.

Troubleshooting common failures

The installer will not complete

Confirm that you downloaded the server installer for the selected OceanBlock 2 release, that the operating system architecture is supported, that the directory is writable and that the download finished completely. Re-run the installer in a clean directory rather than mixing files from a different release.

The server exits during startup

Check the Java version reported in the log, especially the Java 21 requirement for the current release. Verify that all installer files are present and that the launch script still points to the generated jar. Read the first meaningful error rather than the final shutdown line; the last line often only reports the consequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server runs out of memory or pauses for a long time

Check the actual maximum heap, leave operating-system headroom, lower view and simulation distances, and reduce concurrent chunk generation. Add RAM only after measuring usage and confirming that the machine has capacity. A pause accompanied by high CPU or disk activity may require a hardware or workload change instead.

A player receives a mod-list or handshake error

Compare the complete pack release, loader and configuration on the server and that player’s FTB App. Reinstall the exact release on the client if necessary. Do not copy random mods from another pack or delete files until the versions have been compared.

Local players connect but friends outside cannot

Verify the configured port, host firewall rule, fixed private IP and router forwarding destination. Check whether the router’s public address is actually reachable from the internet and whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT. Test from a separate mobile or external connection rather than from inside the same network.

Players see lag or watchdog warnings

Reduce simulation and view distances, stagger new-terrain exploration, stop competing workloads and inspect the server log around the warning. If the problem follows one machine or automation area, isolate that area with a backup copy before making permanent changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An update appears to corrupt the world

Stop the server, preserve the current directory for diagnosis and restore the most recent dated backup to a separate test directory. Do not repeatedly start the damaged world while experimenting; every launch can write additional changes.

When renting is the better choice

Choose managed hosting when you need a server online without maintaining a home machine, cannot configure port forwarding, want a control panel for several administrators or prefer provider-managed hardware and network monitoring. Choose self-hosting when you need complete file access, want to control privacy and backups directly, already have suitable hardware and are comfortable diagnosing Java, modpack and network problems.

Before ordering a managed plan, ask for written confirmation of the exact OceanBlock 2 release and Java version, available memory, CPU allocation, SSD type, backup retention, downloadable world files, restore procedure, data-center regions, port controls, cancellation terms and support boundaries. A plan marketed for modded Minecraft is not automatically compatible with every OceanBlock 2 release.

A practical launch checklist

  • Server and clients use one identical OceanBlock 2 release.
  • The server installer came from FTB’s server-files browser for that release.
  • Java 21 is selected for the current listed release.
  • The heap leaves memory for the operating system and other services.
  • The EULA was accepted only after it was read and agreed to.
  • Server properties, whitelist, view distance and simulation distance are intentional.
  • The local firewall permits only the required Minecraft service.
  • The router forwards the configured port to a fixed private IP, if remote play is required.
  • A local connection and an external connection have both been tested.
  • A dated world backup exists before every pack, loader or Java update, with an off-host copy.

Following this sequence gives you a reproducible OceanBlock 2 server: matching files prevent client errors, measured settings prevent avoidable lag, and tested backups make experimentation reversible.
