If your iron shots keep missing the center of the clubface, start by finding where they strike—not by changing your whole swing. Track a small group of shots with one mid-iron, make one setup check, then use a short-swing drill that gives you immediate feedback. Expand the swing only when you can repeat the contact pattern.

1. Find your usual strike pattern first

Use one club and note whether your repeated misses are toward the heel, toe, top, or bottom of the face. A single poor strike is not enough to diagnose a swing fault. Face-marking methods can make contact easier to see; a constrained-contact drill can also show whether the club is passing through the intended space.

The PGA of America’s iron-consistency guidance includes a tee-based drill in its search excerpt. GOLF.com instructor Kellie Stenzel also recommends drills that provide contact feedback. Treat the result as a clue about your pattern, not proof of one specific cause.

2. Check your setup and balance before changing your swing

Review posture and distance from the ball

Stenzel identifies posture and balance as important checks for centered contact. As a coaching heuristic, she says standing too close can contribute to heel strikes, while standing too far away can contribute to toe strikes. These are starting points to investigate, not rules that explain every golfer’s miss. Change your spacing slightly and assess the result rather than making several setup changes at once.

Callaway Golf Big Bertha BB23 Individual Iron (Right, Graphite, Regular, 5 Iron)

  • LARGE, FORGIVING SWEET SPOT FROM THE A.I. DESIGNED HIGHSTRENGTH XL FACE
  • FAST BALL SPEED FROM NEW LIGHTWEIGHT JAILBREAK A.I.
  • NCREDIBLE FORGIVENESS FROM A CONFIDENCE-INSPIRING BERTHA SHAPE

Notice whether you can stay balanced

Stenzel recommends practicing with your feet together as a way to develop balance and awareness. She also notes that very over-the-top or very inside-to-out paths may make centered contact harder, associating those patterns with toe-side and heel-side strikes respectively. Those are instructor observations, not a certainty for any individual swing; a lesson can help identify what is actually happening.

3. Use a two-tee gate for short swings

The gate gives you a simple clearance target: swing the clubhead through the space around the ball without hitting either tee. It encourages awareness of where the clubhead is moving, but it does not guarantee a particular swing correction.

TaylorMade Golf SIM 2 MAX IRON SET MENS RIGHT HAND STEEL REGULAR 5-PW, AW
  • Cap Back Design - The all-new multi-material Cap Back Design utilizes high-strength stainless steel and ultralight weight polymers. Designed to maximize distance, forgiveness and feel with an extremely low CG.
  • Fast Forgiving Face - The all-new SIM2 Max irons use a fast and forgiving face to give golfers more performance exactly where they need it.
  • New ECHO Damping System - The new ECHO Damping System uses a softer polymer blend and multiple contact points across the face to channel away harsh vibrations creating forged iron like feel.
  • Thru-Slot Speed Pocket - Patented TaylorMade technology engineered to maximize face flexibility for increased ball speed and forgiveness for mishits low on the face.
  • Progressive Inverted Cone Technology - Each face has been uniquely designed to position the Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) on each iron face to optimize forgiveness and minimize side spin to counteract the common right miss.
  1. Place a ball on the ground and set one tee just outside each side of the clubhead’s path, leaving enough room for the head to pass through without touching either tee.
  2. Start with short, controlled swings. Aim to strike the ball while clearing both tees.
  3. If you hit a tee, stop and adjust the setup or motion slightly, changing one thing at a time.
  4. Keep the gate only while you can pass through it without striking the tees. Once contact is controlled, gradually lengthen the swing.

Ordinary tees are enough for this drill. Alignment sticks are optional; they can provide visual references for alignment, path, or an impact-position rehearsal, but they are not required for the basic gate.

4. Separate impact-position practice from strike diagnosis

Address position and impact are not identical. GOLF.com’s Zephyr Melton reports that GOLF Teacher to Watch Jake Thurm uses two alignment sticks to illustrate shaft lean at address and impact, rehearsing hands and hips forward at impact. Thurm puts the distinction this way: “Nobody playing elite-level golf will look the same at impact as they do at address.” Use that as an instruction about impact positions, not as a finding that every golfer should force the same position.

This rehearsal addresses impact-position awareness; it is different from the two-tee gate, which supplies clearance feedback. Neither drill alone establishes why your strikes are off-center.

5. Understand why strike location can affect the shot

Impact location matters partly because collision can induce clubhead rotation. TrackMan’s 2017 technical explanation gives an iron toe strike as an example in which the face can open 1–2 degrees from first touch until the ball separates. That is a vendor’s example within its measurement framework, not a universal prediction of the result of every toe strike.

  • Substantially improved feel was a key focus when designing the 2025 P·790. Individual head optimization and modal analysis tools paired with SpeedFoam Air create best in class forged feel with an explosive sensation at impact. sensation at impact. paired with SpeedFoam Air create best in class forged feel with an explosive sensation at impact.
  • The 2025 P790 debuts an all new ultra high strength, high speed forged face material (4340M) that is 20% stronger than previous generations. 4340M’s increased strength unlocks a thinner face and faster ball speeds while simultaneously increasing thesweet spot size by up to 24%.
  • A faster 4340M face, individual head optimization, and FLTD CG for precise center of gravity (CG) positioning generates increased carry distances with optimal launch and spin windows for betting gapping through the set.
  • New for 2025, an even lower CG in the long irons enhances launch and playability, while a higher CG is designed to improve spin rates and control in the scoring clubs. FLTD CG designs strategically position the center of gravity lowest in the long irons and progressively shifts higher for optimal launch and spin windows throughout the set.

TrackMan also explains that its club-speed, attack-angle, and path values describe pre-impact club movement and do not account for turf interaction. This is a useful reminder that a measurement has a defined scope: a number describing club motion before impact does not, by itself, explain everything the club does through contact with the ball and turf.

6. Decide whether you need instruction or a fitting

If a strike pattern remains repeatable after you have checked setup and practiced controlled contact, the next step depends on the question you need answered:

What you want to assess Useful next step
How your posture, balance, or swing motion relates to the miss Ask a qualified instructor to assess your motion.
Whether club length, lie, or weight may be relevant Ask a qualified fitter to evaluate the clubs and your needs.
Whether the clubhead is clearing the space around the ball Use the two-tee gate; tees are sufficient.
A visual reference for alignment, path, or impact rehearsal Consider alignment sticks; they are optional aids, not a substitute for diagnosing the miss.

Stenzel lists length, lie, and weight among the fitting factors to consider. A fitting assessment is separate from instruction about swing motion, and neither should be treated as a guaranteed fix.
