To hide sensitive information in a screenshot, remove unnecessary areas, cover private details with a fully opaque mark, save an edited copy, then open and inspect that exact copy before you share it. Keep the unedited original private. If the file is a PDF rather than an image, use a PDF redaction tool that applies redactions; drawing a box over page content is not the same thing.
How to redact a screenshot before sharing
- Check what you are sharing. Confirm whether the file is a screenshot image or a PDF. For a PDF that may contain selectable text or hidden information, use the PDF workflow below.
- Crop only what is unnecessary. Remove parts of the frame that the recipient does not need, provided the remaining image still makes sense. Cropping does not hide details that remain in view.
- Cover each private detail. Use a fully opaque shape or mark over sensitive text, such as an email address or account number. Extend the cover a little beyond the text edges so no characters remain exposed. A translucent mark or light blur may leave clues; the cited guidance does not establish a universally safe blur setting.
- Save or export an edited copy. Do not assume an annotation is final until you have checked the saved output. Keep the original private if it still shows the information.
- Open the saved copy and inspect the entire frame. Check each covered area at full size for readable text or missed edges, then scan the surrounding image for details you did not intend to publish.
- Share only the checked copy. Confirm that the file you attach or upload is the edited version, not the original.
What to check across the whole screenshot
Private information can be outside the obvious text field. Review names and avatars, email addresses, browser tabs and URLs, messages, notifications, account or order details, faces, timestamps, location clues, and the status bar. This is a practical review checklist, not a claim that every screenshot contains these details.
Using Markup on an iPhone
Apple’s current iPhone instructions describe quick tools after capture in iOS 26, including Markup, cropping, sharing, and saving. The exact interface can differ by iOS version. In supported apps, Markup shapes include controls for fill color and opacity. For sensitive text, choose a solid fill and make it fully opaque, then inspect the saved copy. Apple documents these as editing tools; its documentation does not certify them as security-grade redaction. Why blur is a poor default for private text
Blur changes how text looks but may leave clues about the covered content. For information that must not be readable, an opaque cover is the more cautious choice. No reviewed source establishes a blur strength that is safe across tools and images, so do not treat a blur effect as a guarantee that text cannot be inferred or recovered. A screenshot-redaction guide recommends solid coverage for text and warns about blur; its image-redaction FAQ discusses the limits of reversing edits.

If the file is a PDF, apply a real redaction
A PDF is not necessarily a flat image: text may remain selectable, and the document may contain hidden information. Adobe’s PDF workflow separates marking content for redaction from applying the redactions, and includes sanitization for information such as comments, metadata, or hidden layers. Use the apply-redactions step, then consider sanitizing and saving the resulting document. Adobe says the tutorial’s feature is available in Acrobat Pro, Premium, or Studio. If you regularly create process guides or other documentation, a capture tool may offer built-in redaction. Scribe documents manual screenshot redaction and Smart Blur during capture in its extension, and says these features are available on Pro and Enterprise plans. This is the vendor’s description of its own functionality, not an independent product test. Scribe states of its saved screenshot redactions: “Redaction is permanent. Once saved, it cannot be undone or removed.” That statement applies to Scribe’s feature, not to every editor. See Scribe Support’s screenshot redaction instructions.
