Start by making it easy for customers to confirm that you are open and find the current route to your entrance. Verify access with the road project team, publish clear directions and parking details across your customer channels, and adjust them whenever construction phases change. Track your own business activity to decide what to try next; there is no established sales-recovery figure or standard timeline that applies to every business.
First, find out exactly how customers can reach you
Do not assume that a road closure means your business is unreachable—or that customers can still use their usual route. Walk or drive the approaches your customers take and confirm the current conditions with the project owner or its information contact.
- Which turns and approaches remain open?
- Where is the legal customer entrance, and is it easy to see?
- Can customers reach parking and walk safely from it to your door?
- Can deliveries and service vehicles still reach the property?
- What is changing in the current construction phase, and what is the next planned access change?
FHWA identifies maintaining access for businesses and residents as an objective of work-zone traffic management. Its guidance also notes that an obscured entrance may call for a temporary entrance or clear signage. These are possible access strategies, not a promise that sales will return to normal. Ask the project team for specific access help
Contact the road project owner or its public-information contact early, then keep in touch as the work advances. Give concrete details rather than a general request for help: describe the approach customers miss, the barrier or sign that hides your entrance, the hours when customers most need access, and whether a temporary entrance or directional information would help. Affected businesses can help identify impacts and mitigation options; the road authority controls public-road traffic devices, so coordinate rather than installing or altering official traffic-control signs yourself. Make your access directions easy to find and trust

For a short, minor project, a clear notice and current online directions may be enough. Longer or more disruptive work may justify broader outreach. Match the effort to how many customers are affected, how long the disruption is expected to last, and how often access details change. FHWA work-zone public information and outreach guidance

- Send opted-in customers a concise message with the verified route and any meaningful changes.
- Ask neighboring businesses, a business association, or the project information office whether they can share consistent access details.
- For customers who may not see online updates, consider a printed route card, flyer, or window notice. FHWA lists brochures and mailers among possible outreach methods. FHWA outreach guidance
Keep directions specific and factual. If a route is not confirmed, say that you are checking rather than sending customers toward an unverified entrance.
Test business changes cautiously and track what happens
Depending on your customers and operating capacity, you might try delivery, appointment flexibility, alternate pickup, or a temporary offer to reduce the inconvenience. A discount is not a proven fix for construction-related losses: choose any promotion with your margins and capacity in mind, and do not assume it will restore sales.

Use your own records to see whether changes coincide with improvement. Compare similar weekdays and times where possible, and note construction phases alongside sales, transactions, cancellations, visits, and customer questions. These measures can guide decisions, but they do not by themselves prove that a particular message or offer caused a change. FHWA discusses monitoring work-zone strategies using measures such as traffic volume, travel time, delay, incidents, complaints, and user costs; these are not a business sales formula. FHWA Work Zone Traffic Management
Keep a simple recovery checklist
- Confirm the current entrance, route, parking, pedestrian access, and delivery arrangements with the project contact.
- Ask about the current construction phase and the next planned change; request mitigation for specific access problems.
- Publish one consistent, verified access notice across customer-facing channels, with a contact method and a recent check date.
- Choose outreach based on the duration and severity of disruption, and refresh it whenever verified details change.
- Review your business records against comparable periods and construction phases before deciding whether to change your approach.
Road access, construction schedules, and sign-placement rules are local and can change. Check current details with the project owner and relevant local authority before directing customers or placing signs.
