If Instagram has disabled your teen’s account because it suspects the user is underage or misrepresented a birthday, sign in to that exact account and complete the age-review instructions Instagram displays. Submit truthful information belonging to the teen. If the account still opens but has limits on messages, content, privacy, or screen time, it is probably an active Teen Account rather than a disabled account; those protections are adjusted through settings and supervision, not an age appeal.
First determine which situation you have
The recovery path depends on whether Instagram has blocked access or has simply placed the account in its Teen Account experience. Ask the teen to try signing in to the original username, email address, or phone number—not a newly created account.

Instagram says users must generally be at least 13, although some countries set a higher minimum. If the teen is below the applicable minimum, an age submission cannot make the account eligible. The country attached to the account and the teen’s current location can affect the available process.

Meta states, “We require everyone to be at least 13 to use Instagram or Facebook.” The company says age information lets it provide experiences suited to different age groups. When Instagram determines that an account may belong to someone below the minimum age, it can deactivate the account and require proof of age through its verification process to prevent deletion. A check may also be triggered when an under-18 birthday is changed to an adult birthday or other information suggests age misrepresentation.

This does not mean every teen with stricter settings has been accused of fraud. Teen Account protections are a product setting for an account that remains usable. Deactivation is an eligibility decision that requires the account holder to complete the review Instagram presents. Keeping those categories separate prevents a parent from sending documents unnecessarily or waiting for an appeal when the teen only needs to adjust supervision settings.
What to do when Instagram has disabled the account
- Sign in to the original account. Use the exact username, email address, or phone number associated with the disabled profile. A parent may sit with the teen, but the account holder should be the person whose age is being checked.
- Read the notice before choosing an option. Instagram may describe the account as disabled, deactivated, or subject to age verification. Follow the button or link presented in that notice. Screens and labels can differ by country, account history, and rollout.
- Enter the teen’s real date of birth. If the birthday was entered incorrectly, correct it in the review flow and explain the mistake where Instagram provides a text box. Do not change the date to an adult birthday simply to bypass protections.
- Provide the evidence the flow requests. Meta’s current explanation says Instagram may ask for an identity document or use Yoti facial age-estimation tools when it suspects someone is misrepresenting their age. The method offered to one account is not proof that the same method will appear for another account.
- Submit through Instagram’s own screen. Do not email a scan to an address found in a social-media post, pay a third party to upload it, or use a “recovery” service that promises reinstatement. Keep a private record of the date and the confirmation shown after submission.
- Wait for the decision shown by Instagram. The available guidance does not establish one universal deadline, an appeal window that applies to every country, or a success rate. If Instagram displays a further request, answer that request in the same account flow rather than starting multiple contradictory submissions.
Age verification is intended to establish the teen’s eligibility, not to prove that a parent owns the phone or pays for the account. A parent’s document submitted as though it belonged to the teen can create a mismatch and may lead to rejection. If the teen has no document that the flow accepts, use the support option offered on that screen and describe the situation accurately.
How to handle a wrong birthday
A mistyped birthday and an intentional attempt to appear older should not be handled the same way. Enter the correct date and give a short, factual explanation if Instagram asks why the account information changed. Keep the explanation consistent with any document or age-estimation step.

- Do not submit a parent’s identification, an edited image, another person’s selfie, or a document with altered dates.
- Do not create a replacement account with an invented adult birthday. That can trigger another age check and leaves the teen without the original account’s data and contacts.
- If the teen is below Instagram’s minimum age in the relevant country, accept that the account is not eligible and preserve any family photos or messages that exist elsewhere.
Meta’s stated minimum is 13 in most places, with higher minimums in some countries. Because the legal threshold can differ by location, do not infer eligibility from a friend’s experience in another country.
Which age-verification methods might appear?
Meta’s May 2026 explanation says its current age-assurance process can request an ID or offer Yoti facial age estimation when it detects possible age misrepresentation, such as changing an under-18 birthday to an adult age. Instagram decides which option to present; availability depends on the account and country.

Meta’s 2026 article, corrected July 31, 2026, describes its age-assurance AI as using general visual patterns that may suggest someone is underage. Meta says this system does not use biometric data, create facial fingerprints, or identify a person in an image. That is Meta’s description of its own technology, not an independent audit, so rely on the privacy notice displayed in the live verification flow for the terms that apply to your submission.

Privacy questions before uploading an ID or selfie
Read the notice on the verification screen before consenting. Data handling can change as a feature rolls out or as local law requires different practices. A 2022 Meta announcement said age-verification information was not shown on a profile, that a video selfie was shared with Yoti for an age estimate and then deleted after confirmation, and that an uploaded ID was securely stored and deleted within 30 days. Those statements describe the test and period in which they were published; they should not be treated as a guarantee that every current flow uses identical retention or deletion rules.

- Do not send an ID through direct messages to strangers claiming to work for Instagram.
- If the notice is unclear, pause and use the official help option linked from the account’s own prompt rather than relying on a third-party explanation.
If the account is active but has Teen Account restrictions
Teen Accounts are designed to limit who can contact teens and the content they see. An active account can therefore feel “locked” even though it has not been disabled. Check the profile, direct messages, notifications, and privacy pages for the restriction notice. If the teen can browse the account and post normally, an age appeal is usually the wrong remedy.
What the teen can review
- Who may send message requests or add the teen to group chats.
- Whether sensitive or mature content is hidden or limited in recommendations and search.
- Private-account and tagging settings.
- Notifications, quiet periods, and other time-management controls available in the account.
What a parent can do
Where supervision is available, a parent can connect to the teen’s account and use tools such as daily time limits or blocked hours. Meta’s February 2025 announcement about India described parental approval for less restrictive settings for teens under 16, along with daily limits and blocked periods. Those details are regional and dated; do not assume that the same approval screen or age cutoff appears everywhere.
Supervision changes how an active account is used. It does not submit age evidence, overturn a deactivation, or restore a deleted profile. If the account is disabled, finish the age-review process first; use supervision after access is restored and the feature is offered in your location.
Regional and account differences to expect
Instagram does not promise that every user sees the same form. The country associated with the account, local age rules, the account’s previous birthday changes, and the current product rollout can all affect the notice and available options. A parent in one country may see an ID upload while a teen elsewhere sees a Yoti estimate or a different support route. Do not treat a screenshot from another family as an official template.

Likewise, details announced for India in February 2025—such as parental approval for less restrictive settings for some users under 16—should be treated as localized product information, not a worldwide entitlement. The safest instruction is always the one attached to the teen’s own signed-in account.

Troubleshooting common recovery problems
The age-review button is missing
Sign out of other Instagram accounts, update the app, and sign in again to the exact disabled account. Capture the wording of the notice without sharing the teen’s documents publicly. If no age option appears, use the help path attached to that notice; a generic appeal form may not route an age case correctly.
The submission is rejected
Check that the image is readable, unexpired where the flow requires a current document, and belongs to the teen. Make sure the date of birth entered in the form matches the evidence. Submit again only if Instagram offers another attempt or requests a clearer image. Repeatedly sending different birthdays or other people’s documents can make the discrepancy worse.
The teen used an adult birthday years ago
Do not preserve the false date to keep access. Enter the actual birthday and explain the correction. If the teen is under the local minimum, the account may remain ineligible. If the teen is old enough, the result still depends on Instagram’s review; no source establishes a guaranteed restoration.
A parent wants to complete everything
A parent can read the notice, help photograph a document, explain privacy implications, and monitor the account afterward. The evidence must identify the teen whose age is under review. A parent should not impersonate the teen or submit parental identification as the teen’s proof.
The account may have been hacked as well
Age review does not replace security recovery. If the email, phone number, or password was changed, preserve those details and use the security-recovery route shown by Instagram. Do not mix a hacked-account report with an invented birthday or send credentials to a paid “recovery agent.”
What not to do
- Do not create a second account with a false adult age to evade Teen Account safeguards.
- Do not use a parent’s ID, a friend’s selfie, altered documents, or borrowed accounts.
- Do not pay anyone who guarantees reinstatement, claims an inside contact, or asks for the teen’s password or one-time code.
- Do not assume a method described in a 2022 test is still available in 2026.
- Do not promise the teen a fixed response time or certain restoration; Instagram has not published a universal timeline or outcome rate in its guidance.

- Confirm whether the account opens or displays a disabled/age-review notice.
- Record the exact username and the wording of the notice.
- Confirm the teen’s real date of birth and the minimum age that applies in the relevant country.
- Sign in to the original account and use only the verification method Instagram presents.
- Submit truthful, readable evidence belonging to the teen; never substitute a parent’s document.
- Read the current privacy and retention notice before uploading an ID or completing a facial age-estimation step.
- Keep the confirmation or case reference private and watch the account for a follow-up request.
- After access returns, review Teen Account settings and enable supervision if it is appropriate and available.
What outcome to expect
The practical goal is to show Instagram that the account holder meets the applicable age requirement and that the account information is accurate. Instagram may restore access, request more information, or determine that the account is not eligible. The available guidance does not publish a universal appeal deadline, processing time, or probability of success, so avoid services that claim to know or guarantee those figures.

How long does an age appeal take?
