If your neighbor with Alzheimer’s is in immediate danger, call 911 first—do not wait to reach their family or caregiver. Tell the dispatcher and responders that the person has Alzheimer’s or dementia, if you know that, and describe what you have observed. Once it is safe, contact the household’s designated emergency contact and follow any plan they have shared.
What to do first if your neighbor is in danger
- Call 911 for an immediate threat to life or safety. This includes a fire, serious injury, an acute medical concern, or a situation in which the person cannot remain safe. The Alzheimer’s Association’s U.S. guidance says, “If you need immediate assistance for an emergency situation, dial 911.” Preparing for Emergencies
- Tell the dispatcher what you know. Say that the person has Alzheimer’s or dementia, if known, and describe concrete observations—such as a fall, smoke, confusion about how to exit, or trouble responding. Report facts rather than trying to diagnose the cause.
- Stay calm and explain what you are doing. Use short, respectful sentences and one instruction at a time. For example: “There’s a fire alarm. We’re going outside now. I’ll stay with you.”
- Contact the family, caregiver, or designated emergency contact as soon as it is safe. Share where the person is and what has happened. Do not postpone calling 911 while trying to find that contact.
- Stay with the person if you can do so safely. A changed or unfamiliar setting can increase confusion, agitation, or wandering risk. Do not leave them alone in new surroundings when they may become disoriented.
These steps reflect U.S. guidance. Emergency numbers and local procedures may differ outside the United States.
What to do if your neighbor with dementia wanders off
Start looking right away, but do not put yourself or the person at risk by entering an unsafe area or conducting a dangerous search. Keep the family or caregiver informed while you act.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Search the immediate surroundings. Check nearby areas such as the yard and other places close to the home.
- If the person has not been found within 15 minutes, call 911. The Alzheimer’s Association’s U.S. wandering guidance says to file a missing-person report and tell authorities the person has dementia and is a vulnerable adult. Wandering and Dementia
- Share useful information with responders. If the family has provided a recent photo or likely destinations, pass those along. A current close-up photo can help identify the missing person.
- Report sightings promptly. If you see your neighbor wandering, lost, or dressed inappropriately for the conditions, contact the family or caregiver. Call 911 if there is immediate danger.
Do not assume that a short absence is harmless. The Alzheimer’s Association says six in 10 people living with dementia will wander at least once; the current webpage does not state a publication date for that figure.

How to help during an evacuation or sudden move
If evacuation is likely, leave early when possible and follow instructions from emergency officials. A disruption to routine and an unfamiliar destination can make it harder for a person with Alzheimer’s to stay oriented.
- Tell the family or caregiver where the person is going and how to reach them. Notify medical personnel of the new location and contact details when appropriate.
- Try to stay together during the move and at the destination. Avoid leaving the person alone in unfamiliar surroundings.
- Speak calmly and explain the next step in simple terms. Allow extra time for the person to understand and respond.
- If the family has shared information about medication, mobility, communication, or comfort needs, give it to responders or shelter staff when relevant.

What neighbors should—and should not—take on
A neighbor can be an important source of practical help: calling emergency services, staying with the person when safe, sharing observations, contacting the designated caregiver, and reporting a sighting. Follow any emergency plan the household has shared.
Recommended Free Tools
- Do not assume visible confusion explains every problem; report signs of injury, sudden illness, or danger to emergency services.
- Do not administer medication or make care decisions unless the household’s plan and appropriate direction make that role clear.
- Do not enter unsafe places or put yourself in danger during a search or evacuation.
- Do not treat a safety aid as a substitute for emergency services or the family’s plan.
The cited guidance does not establish a neighbor’s legal authority to enter a home, administer medication, or make decisions for another person. If there is an immediate threat, call emergency services and follow responders’ directions.

How a household can make it easier for neighbors to help
A household emergency plan can give a willing neighbor useful information without asking them to make care decisions. The Alzheimer’s Association recommends keeping emergency numbers accessible and ensuring smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers are available and inspected regularly. Home Safety

Share a simple contact and response plan
If the person and household are comfortable doing so, they can tell a trusted neighbor whom to call, where to find the emergency kit, and any key communication or mobility information to pass on to responders. Keep the contact details current. The neighbor’s role is to help communicate and respond safely—not to replace the caregiver.

Consider identification or wandering-response aids
A medical ID bracelet or tag may help others identify the person and reach a contact. The Alzheimer’s Association recommends considering a wandering response service; the National Institute on Aging names MedicAlert + Alzheimer’s Association Safe and Found as one example. Families should check current availability, coverage, enrollment, cost, and terms, and make choices with the person as appropriate. No identification item or service guarantees that someone will be found or safe. Coping With Alzheimer’s Behaviors: Wandering and Getting Lost
A waterproof document pouch, charger, and emergency preparedness kit are practical supplies, but they do not replace calling 911 when there is immediate danger. If a caregiver may need backup at other times, the Alzheimer’s Association describes respite care and support from trusted people, including neighbors. Respite Care
