Help a child change hard-to-manage smartphone habits by identifying what the phone is doing for them, protecting sleep and other priorities with a few clear family rules, and making appealing offline options available. “Smartphone addiction” is common everyday wording, but screen duration alone does not establish a clinical diagnosis. Focus on whether use is interfering with sleep, school, relationships, emotional coping or activities the child values.

Start by understanding the child’s phone use

Begin with curiosity rather than an immediate ban. Ask what your child enjoys on the phone, which apps or content they use, when they tend to reach for it, and whether anything online has upset or worried them. Phone use may provide entertainment, connection, stress relief or a way to avoid an uncomfortable task; the reason matters when choosing a response.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests looking at five connected factors: the child, the content, how media is used to calm down, what it crowds out, and communication within the family. That shifts the question from “How many hours?” to “What is happening, and how is it affecting this child?” AAP: How to Use the 5 C’s of Media Guidance

For young teens, include them in conversations and in choosing workable expectations. The AAP’s guidance for ages 10–14 recognizes that peer relationships and growing independence are important at this stage; participation can help a teen understand and take ownership of boundaries while adults retain responsibility for safety.

Look for what phone use is crowding out

Notice patterns rather than relying on a single daily-hour figure. Consider whether phone use is affecting sleep, homework, friendships, family conversations, reading, exercise, play, hobbies or the child’s ability to cope with difficult feelings. Ask what they would like more room for, then make that alternative realistic and accessible.

  • Is the child regularly tired because a device is used late at night?
  • Are homework or family routines repeatedly interrupted?
  • Has the child withdrawn from friends, activities or interests they previously enjoyed?
  • Does the child rely on the phone as their main way to calm down or fall asleep?
  • Are online experiences affecting mood or creating conflict at home?

There is no research-supported screen-time threshold that diagnoses smartphone addiction or works for every child. The AAP’s 2026 policy calls for boundaries shaped around the child, family routines and priorities, including differences between school nights and weekends. Its 5 C’s guidance moves beyond a universal “2-hour rule.” AAP policy: Digital Ecosystems, Children, and Adolescents

Set a few predictable family boundaries

Choose a small number of rules that address the problems you have actually observed. Make them specific enough to follow, explain why they matter, and apply them consistently. Include adults’ habits: a rule is easier to accept when parents also put devices away during shared time.

The AAP’s family media plan guidance includes screen-free times and places, device settings, role modeling and review of the plan. AAP: How to Make a Family Media Plan

Use device settings to support the rules

Built-in settings can make agreed boundaries easier to follow, but they are not a substitute for supervision or conversation. On the child’s device, look for Do Not Disturb or Focus options and schedule them for school, homework or bedtime. Parents can also use available parental controls for screen time, downloads, contacts and purchases. Review the controls with the child and explain what they do rather than presenting them as a hidden solution.

Settings vary by device and operating-system version, so use the device’s current settings menu or manufacturer support instructions for exact steps. No particular control or product is established as necessary or as a treatment for a child’s difficulties.

Replace phone time with something the child wants to do

Simply removing access can leave the need the phone was meeting untouched. Work with the child to choose appealing alternatives: time outdoors, sports, reading, music or art, family games, a hobby, caring for a pet, or seeing friends face to face. Make the activity practical—available equipment, a ride, a suitable place, or protected time may matter more than another lecture about screen use.

If the child mainly uses a phone to calm down or fall asleep, help them build other ways to manage those moments. A predictable wind-down routine, a calming offline activity or support from a trusted adult may be a starting point. If emotional coping remains a concern, discuss it with the child’s pediatrician.

Know when to seek additional support

Pay attention to persistent distress or disruption, not just a disagreement about limits. HHS identifies irritability when a device is removed, secrecy about online behavior, withdrawal from offline activities and repeated unsuccessful efforts to cut down as possible warning signs. AAP teen guidance also describes problematic use in terms of compulsivity, interference with friendships or frequent arguments.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say

A January 2026 UK government summary says high-quality causal evidence linking children’s mental health and wellbeing with smartphone, social-media and other digital-technology use is lacking. That does not mean a family should ignore a child’s difficulties; it means the evidence does not justify saying that smartphones alone cause a particular mental-health outcome or that one restriction reliably prevents it. Family routines are best understood as individualized habit support and harm reduction. In a May 20, 2026 announcement, HHS cited national estimates of seven to nine hours a day of adolescent entertainment screen use. This is a broad estimate, not a measure of smartphone use alone or a figure that applies to every child. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. also made claims about rising health and developmental problems in the announcement; those are his attributed statements, not a causal conclusion established by the UK evidence summary.
