Use a shorter navigation URL or move the payload into a request body or server-side record. Puppeteer has no documented page.goto() setting that raises Chromium’s URL limit. Chromium’s URL guidance describes 2 MB as Chrome’s practical maximum, while the navigation code enforces an internal serialized-URL bound that can vary by browser build. Treat 2 MB as published guidance, not a universal Puppeteer guarantee.

A long address can also be rejected by your server, reverse proxy, load balancer, or a security filter. The reliable fix is to identify which layer failed, then redesign the request if the data is genuinely large.

What is the maximum URL length for page.goto()?

page.goto(url) accepts a URL string and navigates the browser to it. Puppeteer does not expose a documented option for increasing the maximum. Chromium’s project guidance says Chrome limits URLs to a maximum of 2 MB for practical reasons and to avoid denial-of-service problems in inter-process communication. Chromium navigation source also checks the serialized destination against an internal url::kMaxURLChars bound.

Because the cited source does not establish one identical numeric constant for every Chrome or Chromium release, do not promise that every Puppeteer installation accepts exactly 2 MB. Your effective limit depends on the Puppeteer version, the bundled or externally supplied browser, launch mode, and any intermediary handling the request.

Do not confuse navigation length with omnibox display length

Chromium separately documents address-bar display limits: 32 kB on most platforms and 1 kB on VR platforms. Those figures describe what the omnibox displays, not the maximum URL that navigation can accept. A URL may be truncated visually while still being a different length internally.

Hostname limits are a different constraint

Chromium’s URL guidance summarizes DNS syntax limits of 253 characters for a fully qualified hostname and 63 characters per hostname label. These apply to the host name, not to the complete URL, which also includes the scheme, path, query, fragment, and encoding.

How to diagnose a long-URL failure

Start by measuring the exact string you pass to Puppeteer and recording the browser build. Then determine whether navigation was rejected before a request, failed during transport, or received an HTTP response from the destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Validate the URL. Include a scheme such as https://. A malformed or scheme-less value can fail independently of its size.
  2. Measure the serialized URL. JavaScript’s url.length counts UTF-16 code units, while Chromium checks the serialized URL representation. Log the value, but treat it as a diagnostic approximation when non-ASCII characters are involved.
  3. Capture request lifecycle events. A requestfailed event means the request did not complete. A 404, 503, or other HTTP error status is still an HTTP response and normally ends with requestfinished; it is not automatically a Puppeteer transport failure.
  4. Inspect redirects. A redirect finishes one request and creates another. The redirected URL may be the one that exceeds a limit or is rejected by a proxy.
  5. Check server and intermediary logs. If Chromium issued the request, inspect your web server, CDN, reverse proxy, WAF, and load balancer. Their request-line limits are separate from Chromium’s.

Diagnostic Puppeteer script

This script logs the URL size and distinguishes failed requests from HTTP responses. It also handles documented goto() cases in which the returned response is null, such as about:blank or a hash-only change.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  const target = process.argv[2];

  if (!target) throw new Error('Usage: node diagnose.js https://example.com/path');
  console.log('URL code units:', target.length);
  console.log('URL bytes (UTF-8):', Buffer.byteLength(target, 'utf8'));

  page.on('request', request => {
    if (request.isNavigationRequest() && request.frame() === page.mainFrame()) {
      console.log('navigation request:', request.url());
    }
  });
  page.on('requestfailed', request => {
    console.error('request failed:', request.url(), request.failure());
  });
  page.on('requestfinished', request => {
    if (request.isNavigationRequest() && request.frame() === page.mainFrame()) {
      console.log('navigation request finished:', request.url());
    }
  });

  try {
    const response = await page.goto(target, {
      waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
      timeout: 90_000
    });
    console.log('status:', response ? response.status() : 'no response (documented null case)');
    console.log('final URL:', page.url());
  } catch (error) {
    console.error('goto threw:', error.message);
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

In headless mode, valid HTTP error statuses generally do not make goto() throw. A thrown error points more toward malformed input, a browser/navigation rejection, a network failure, or a timeout. The event logs help you separate those cases.

Can you increase Puppeteer’s URL limit?

Not through a documented Puppeteer option. Increasing timeout changes how long Puppeteer waits; it does not enlarge Chromium’s URL allowance. Likewise, truncation in the omnibox is a display behavior, not a configurable navigation fix. An unpinned browser update can change implementation details, so pin and record the exact browser version when you need reproducible behavior.

Better request designs for large payloads

Move the payload into a request body

If you control the endpoint, expose a suitable POST (or another method with a body) and send the large document there. The navigation URL remains short, while the server receives the data in the request body. This requires endpoint and authentication changes; a normal browser navigation is generally a GET, so you may need an intermediate page that submits the form or fetches the data.

Persist data and navigate with a short identifier

Store the payload in an application database or object store, give it a random, expiring identifier, and navigate to a URL such as https://app.example/view/7f3c.... The page retrieves the data through an authenticated API. This avoids request-line limits but introduces storage lifecycle, authorization, cleanup, and replay considerations. Use short-lived tokens when the content is sensitive.

Reduce data only when semantics remain intact

Remove redundant fields or use a more compact representation if the endpoint contract permits it. Compression may help only if the server can decode it; URL encoding can make data longer, especially for characters outside the unreserved set. Do not blindly encode an already large value and assume it will shrink.

Choosing an approach

Approach Best when Costs and caveats
Request body You control the API and can change its method contract Requires server and client changes; browser navigation may need an intermediate page
Stored payload plus short ID Data is large, reusable, or needs access control Requires persistence, expiration, authorization, and cleanup
Compact representation The data is only slightly over your operational limit Encoding can expand data; meaning and validation must be preserved
Long URL unchanged The URL is comfortably below all known limits and intermediaries Fragile as payloads grow; URLs leak into logs, history, referrers, and analytics

Common errors and fixes

“Invalid URL” or an immediate navigation exception

Check for a missing scheme, illegal characters, accidental whitespace, or an unescaped value. Construct the URL with the standard URL and URLSearchParams classes rather than concatenating untrusted strings.

requestfailed with no HTTP status

This indicates a request-level failure, such as browser rejection, DNS failure, connection reset, or a proxy problem. Compare the logged URL size with the browser build and inspect Chromium and proxy logs.

HTTP 414 (URI Too Long) or a proxy-specific 4xx

The request reached an HTTP component that rejected the request line. Reduce the URL or switch to a body/short identifier. Raising a proxy setting may be possible in your infrastructure, but it does not remove Chromium’s own bound and can create inconsistent behavior across environments.

A timeout after a very long URL

Do not assume length is the cause. Check DNS, TLS, server processing, redirects, and page readiness. A longer timeout cannot repair a rejected URL; it only waits longer for a condition that may never succeed.

It works locally but fails in CI

Compare Puppeteer and browser versions, headless mode, launch flags, proxy configuration, and environment variables. Log the final URL after every redirect and reproduce with the same browser binary rather than relying on “latest.”

Performance, reliability, and security notes

  • Large URLs increase parsing, logging, tracing, and cache-key overhead at every hop.
  • Query strings can appear in browser history, access logs, analytics, referrer headers, screenshots, and monitoring systems. Do not place secrets or personal data in them.
  • Validate and authorize server-side records referenced by short identifiers; an unguessable ID is not a substitute for access control.
  • Set an expiration and deletion policy for stored payloads, and cap body sizes independently to prevent denial-of-service through POST requests.
  • For automated tests, record browser version, URL length, redirect chain, request events, and the first failing layer so a future browser update is diagnosable.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a clean screenshot or PDF rather than testing Puppeteer navigation itself, ScreenshotNeo accepts one request and returns the image or PDF. Its cleanup steps accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

Example using cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a URL fragment count toward the navigation limit?

The fragment is part of the URL string, but it is handled locally after navigation and may not produce a network request. A hash-only change can make page.goto() resolve to null; it does not provide a way around browser URL validation.

Should I raise web-server request-line limits instead of changing the URL?

Only when you control every hop and have a measured reason to do so. Chromium, proxies, CDNs, and application servers can enforce different limits, so raising one component can leave failures elsewhere and increase denial-of-service exposure.

Is a 2 MB URL safe to use as a contract?

No. Chromium publishes 2 MB as a practical Chrome maximum, not a cross-version Puppeteer guarantee. Keep production URLs substantially shorter and verify the exact browser and intermediary versions you deploy.
