If a neighbor’s post or message harasses you, spreads a claim you believe is false, or makes a threat, first assess your safety. When it is safe to do so, preserve the post and its context before reporting it; then use the platform’s reporting and contact controls, and involve local authorities or legal help when the circumstances warrant it. The steps below use Nextdoor as an example, but its features and rules are platform-specific, and legal definitions vary by location.

What to do first if a post or message feels threatening

If you believe someone may harm you or another person, prioritize getting to a safe place and contact emergency services or local law enforcement. Do not wait for a social network to review a report. In the United States, the FBI describes a threat sent by text, direct or private message, social media, or email as an electronic message threat, and advises notifying law enforcement; incidents outside federal jurisdiction may need to be handled by local police. See the FBI Threat Intimidation Guide. Reporting routes and emergency numbers differ outside the U.S.

If there is no immediate danger, avoid escalating a hostile exchange. Save the record if safe, report the specific content, and choose contact or feed controls according to what you want to stop.

What to save before reporting a harassing post

Save enough information to establish what was said, who posted it, when it appeared, and how it fits into any wider pattern. The Australian eSafety Commissioner’s evidence guidance recommends collecting information that can help show online harm; the FBI likewise advises preserving electronic evidence. Avoid cropping or editing away context. Evidence gathering should not put you at greater risk.

  • When and where: Note the date and time, the platform, and the post URL or another locator that can help find it again.
  • The pattern: Keep a dated log of repeated unwanted contact or related posts. A sequence can show a pattern that one item alone may not.
  • Your report: Keep a copy of what you reported and when, if the platform provides a confirmation or case reference.

Keep original messages or posts available where safe. If the content disappears after a report, your saved record may still help you explain what happened to the platform or an appropriate authority.

How to report the content and limit further contact

Report the individual post or comment through the platform’s current reporting flow. If the account itself is part of the problem, report the account as well. Nextdoor’s Moderator Academy search-indexed material says any neighbor can report content and that sensitive reports, including misinformation, go to Support. The exact interface can change, so use the options currently shown in the app rather than relying on an old click-by-click path. A report does not guarantee removal or tell you what action the platform took.

  • Report: Ask the platform to review content or an account under its rules.
  • Block: Limit direct contact or other interaction, depending on the platform’s current controls.
  • Mute: Reduce the content you see in your feed, where that option is available.

Nextdoor’s help material says that blocking someone from sending direct messages may not hide that person’s feed content unless you also mute them. Check the current app’s description of each control before relying on it; feature behavior may change.

How to respond to a false claim without amplifying it

Save the claim and enough context to understand it, then report it using the platform category that best fits. If a public correction would help, keep it brief, factual, and supported by reliable records. Avoid repeating or reposting the claim unnecessarily, since that can spread it further.

A claim you believe is false is not automatically misinformation under a platform’s rules, and an inaccurate statement is not automatically unlawful. The platform makes its own policy assessment; whether a statement has legal consequences depends on the facts and the law where you live. Avoid presenting “defamation” as a legal conclusion without appropriate local advice.

What Nextdoor’s moderation information can—and cannot—tell you

Nextdoor’s March 9, 2026 announcement about its 2025 Transparency Report describes moderation that involves neighbor reports, community volunteers, Neighborhood Operations, and automated systems. The company says its policies include updates about misinformation and describes platform-wide reporting and removal measures. Its U.S. Member Agreement says it may limit distribution or remove content it determines violates its guidelines and may restrict accounts, while reserving discretion about proactive moderation. These are descriptions of the platform’s processes, not a promise about any individual report.

Nextdoor-reported figure What the company says it describes
Less than 1% of content was reported as “Hurtful” and less than 0.5% as “Harmful” in 2025 Nextdoor’s platform-wide 2025 reporting, announced in 2026
Median removal time under 7 hours in 2025 Nextdoor’s company-reported timing for violative content—not a response-time promise for an individual report
More than 105 million verified neighbors Nextdoor’s company description in its 2026 announcement

The figures are Nextdoor’s own platform-wide statistics, not independent measurements of how a particular complaint will be handled. The company’s March 9, 2026 announcement is available at Nextdoor’s 2025 Transparency Report announcement.

A July 2026 preprint by David J. Grüning and Matthew Katsaros reports randomized trials involving 100,000 users each: a 2022 report-triggered comment filter reduced views of offensive comments by 12%, while a proactive filter tested in 2023–2024 reduced views of offensive posts by 95%. The authors report no significant changes across most measured outcomes, including platform visits and content production. These findings concern visibility in the studied settings; they do not establish how an individual report will be resolved or whether muting or blocking will work in a particular case. The paper is a preprint, not settled evidence of a universal outcome: the study on social-media moderation filters.

When to involve authorities or seek legal advice

Contact law enforcement about credible threats or other conduct that may be criminal, using the appropriate local route. Preserve the evidence and consider speaking with a lawyer or local legal-aid service if you are weighing legal action. The eSafety Commissioner’s advice is Australian guidance, while the FBI guidance is U.S.-specific; neither should be treated as a universal legal rule. The FTC also provides U.S. guidance on bullying and cyberbullying. The legal meaning of harassment, threats, and defamation—and the available remedies—depends on jurisdiction and the facts.
