For a reliable Playwright download test, start waiting for the download before triggering it, save the completed download to a path built with your language’s path utilities, and verify the saved file’s contents against the application’s contract. Don’t rely on Playwright’s temporary path or assume browsers always suggest the same filename.
Use an awaited download event, then save the file
The download event fires when a download starts, not when the file is ready to inspect. Register the wait before the click so the event cannot slip past the test, then await saveAs (or the language equivalent) before checking the destination. Playwright’s JavaScript download guide demonstrates this sequence, and the Download API reference documents the lifecycle and methods.
JavaScript or TypeScript
import { mkdir } from 'node:fs/promises';
import path from 'node:path';
const outputDir = path.resolve('test-results', 'downloads');
await mkdir(outputDir, { recursive: true });
const downloadPromise = page.waitForEvent('download');
await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Download report' }).click();
const download = await downloadPromise;
// This is a test-controlled destination name, not the browser's suggested name.
const destination = path.join(outputDir, 'report.csv');
await download.saveAs(destination);
Use a locator and destination that match the application under test. saveAs copies the download to the chosen path and waits for completion if the transfer is still in progress, so it is the right point after which to inspect the file.
Python
from pathlib import Path
output_dir = Path("test-results") / "downloads"
output_dir.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
with page.expect_download() as download_info:
page.get_by_role("link", name="Download report").click()
download = download_info.value
destination = output_dir / "report.csv"
download.save_as(destination)
The official Python downloads guide shows this context-manager pattern and also documents equivalent async usage. Playwright’s Java example uses page.waitForDownload() around the triggering action and then saveAs; the .NET guide uses WaitForDownloadAsync() before clicking and SaveAsAsync() to persist the file.

Verify the saved file, not just the event
A download event proves the browser began a download; it does not prove the output is complete, parseable, or correct. After saving, verify the conditions that define a valid file for your application. There is no single assertion that fits every format, so tie the checks to the product’s output contract.
- Confirm the intended action caused a download by awaiting the event.
- Wait for the save operation to finish, then check that the destination exists as a regular file.
- Check that the file is nonempty or within an expected size range when size is meaningful for that output.
- Parse the file using the relevant parser and assert expected structure and values—for example, required CSV headers and fixture rows, or a valid archive listing.
- If filename or response metadata is part of the feature, assert it separately rather than treating the temporary path as proof.
File existence and an expected extension are useful basic checks, but neither establishes that the content is valid. Avoid asserting volatile details such as timestamps or line endings unless they are part of the intended behavior; normalize them only when they are known to vary across platforms and are irrelevant to the contract.

Choose stable names and paths across browsers and operating systems
Build output paths with platform-native utilities—such as Node’s path.resolve and path.join, or Python’s pathlib.Path—and create the destination directory explicitly. This avoids hard-coding path separators. The file name passed to saveAs can be controlled by the test, as in the examples above; it need not match the name the browser computed.
Recommended Free Tools
suggestedFilename() reports a browser-computed name, typically derived from the response’s Content-Disposition header or an HTML download attribute. Playwright notes that browsers may compute that name differently, so assert it only when filename behavior itself is under test and account for the target browser’s behavior. See the Download API reference.

Playwright supports Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox, and its browser documentation describes installation and cache locations for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Run the relevant checks on the browser engines and operating systems your project supports. A cross-platform test should validate stable application semantics, not assume that generated metadata, timestamps, line endings, or browser-suggested names are byte-for-byte identical everywhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle temporary files, context cleanup, and remote runs
Playwright-managed downloads are temporary and are deleted when their producing browser context closes. Save or inspect the download before closing that context. If you need artifacts to remain available after browser close, configure an artifactsDir; without it, the artifacts directory is temporary and cleaned up. The lifecycle is described in the downloads guide, Download API, and BrowserType API.

The Download API also exposes failure(), path(), suggestedFilename(), url(), and createReadStream(). Use failure() when you need an explicit status or are diagnosing a transfer; a canceled download can report canceled. The temporary path is available after completion for a successful download, but path() throws for failed or canceled downloads and when the browser is connected remotely. Prefer saveAs to write to a path accessible to the test runner, especially in remote or containerized execution. The Java API reference also notes that the internal temporary file can have a random GUID name; it is not the suggested filename (Java Download API reference).

Avoid common download-test races and false positives
- Starting the wait after the click: the event may already have fired. Create the event wait first.
- Inspecting the file as soon as the event arrives: the event marks the start; await
saveAsbefore filesystem or parser checks. - Closing the context before saving: cleanup removes its temporary downloads. Persist or validate the file first.
- Using
path()in a remote connection: it is documented to throw in that case. Save to a runner-accessible destination instead. - Hard-coding a suggested name across browser engines: filename computation can vary. Test that behavior separately if it matters.
- Starting a background listener for a known trigger: an unawaited listener forks control flow and can let the scenario finish while the transfer is underway. Prefer an awaited event pattern.
- Checking only presence or extension: parse the file and check expected structure or data so a wrong or malformed file does not pass.
