When a fantasy hockey star gets hurt, check your league’s injury-slot rules first, then decide whether to stash the player and use the freed roster spot on a temporary replacement. Fantasy IR eligibility is set by the platform—not guaranteed by an NHL team’s injury designation—and your plan should change as the player’s status and role develop.
Start with your league’s injury-slot rules
NHL club Injured Reserve and a fantasy league’s IR or IR+ slot are separate systems. NHL rules allow a club to place a player on IR when an injury is expected to keep him from playing for at least seven days; a player on NHL IR is ineligible to play in NHL games for at least seven days. Check the player’s current eligibility label in your fantasy app and the settings for your specific league. Yahoo’s glossary describes IR eligibility in relation to NHL IR and says IR+ can include day-to-day players, but availability and league settings can vary; verify the current rules in your league before moving anyone. - Before making the move, read what happens to roster moves when a healthy player occupies an injury slot.
Decide whether to stash the star
Holding an injured star is more attractive when an eligible IR slot lets you preserve the player without giving up an active roster spot. If no slot is available, or the player does not qualify, weigh the expected absence against your roster limits, waiver options, and the value of the spot you would need to keep open. There is no universal keep-or-drop rule: the answer depends on the injury outlook, scoring format, roster size, and available replacements.

Do not treat a return estimate as a confirmed return date. Separate a formal designation from uncertain updates, and revisit the choice when the team or platform reports a meaningful change.
Choose a replacement by opportunity, not reputation
Look for a temporary add whose role may improve while the star is out. A teammate moving up the depth chart or into stronger usage may be more useful than a recognizable player whose role has not changed. When comparing available players, consider:
- Role: Is the player likely to move into a more prominent spot or take on additional responsibility?
- Scoring fit: Does the player contribute in the categories your league rewards?
- Timing: Is the opportunity likely to last through the star’s absence and your current scoring period?
- Availability: Can the player actually be added under your league’s waiver rules and transaction limits?
Manage the roster while the player is out
- Check the latest status. Review the team’s update and the fantasy platform’s player designation. Yahoo’s player-change page is one place to check platform status, but it is not a guarantee of a return forecast. Yahoo fantasy hockey player changes
- Verify the slot and transaction rules. Confirm eligibility, available roster space, waiver timing, and any add limits in your league.
- Use the injury slot if it preserves flexibility. Make the move only if your platform and league allow it, and check whether occupying the slot affects future adds.
- Add the best role-based replacement. Reassess when the player’s status, line role, or availability changes.
Plan for the star’s return before activating him
Before the injured player is ready to return, identify a legal roster spot for him. That may mean dropping the temporary replacement or another player, depending on their current roles and your league’s scoring needs. Check transaction timing and roster limits before the return date so you are not forced into a rushed decision.
Platform behavior is not universal. ESPN’s June 2026 support guidance describes activating an IR/IL player by moving him to an empty bench or lineup spot; its waiver guidance says an owner cannot add a player while a healthy player occupies an IR/IL slot. - Confirm the latest injury status and distinguish an official designation from an uncertain timeline.
- Check your platform’s eligibility label and your league’s IR/IR+ settings.
- Stash the star if the slot is available and doing so leaves useful roster flexibility.
- Choose a replacement based on likely role, category fit, and availability—not name value alone.
- Reassess after material news and prepare a legal roster spot before the player returns.
