A single jungle sapling grows a regular one-block-wide jungle tree. Four saplings planted in a square grow the large 2×2 jungle tree. The large form needs far more open space above and around it, and most failed attempts come down to that space being blocked.
Two jungle tree outcomes and how they differ
Jungle trees in Minecraft come in two forms. The planting pattern decides which one you get, not the sapling type or any special item.

Those measurements come from the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki jungle tree reference. The wiki gives no separate height or clearance figures for the regular form, so treat the regular-tree row as a qualitative comparison rather than a set of measurements.

- Place one jungle sapling on a suitable planting block, such as dirt or a grass block, in a spot with open air above it.
- Check that the sapling has no blocks directly above it or beside it that would block growth.
- Wait for it to grow naturally, or apply bone meal to speed it up (see the bone meal section below).
- When the trunk has grown, harvest the logs. The result is a single-block trunk, not a 2×2 tree.
Growing a large 2×2 jungle tree
The large tree is built from a square of four saplings. Planting them in any other arrangement, such as a line or an L shape, will not produce the 2×2 form.

- Choose a flat area of planting blocks large enough for two blocks by two blocks, plus the clearance described below.
- Place four jungle saplings so they fill a complete 2×2 square with no gaps and no extra saplings touching it.
- Clear the 3×3 area at sapling level and the 5×5 column above it, reaching at least 11 blocks above the saplings. The reference centres this column on the northwest sapling of the square.
- Wait for growth, or apply bone meal to any one of the four saplings to speed it up.
- Once the tree is fully grown, harvest the trunk and leaves in a planned order so you do not fall from the upper logs.
Clearance requirements at a glance
- A 3×3 open area at the level of the saplings, so the base of the trunk can form.
- A 5×5 column of open air, centred on the northwest sapling, rising at least 11 blocks above the saplings.
- No leaves, stone, wood, or other solid blocks inside that column, including overhangs from nearby trees.
- Room for the full height of the tree, which can reach 32 blocks.
Using bone meal correctly
Bone meal can be used on any jungle sapling in the group to accelerate growth. It works on the whole structure once the growth conditions are met, but it does not remove an obstruction. If a sapling will not grow even with bone meal, the cause is almost always the space above or beside it, not the bone meal itself.
When a jungle tree fails to grow
Work through these checks in order. Most problems fall into one of the first two.
1. Obstructions above and beside the layout
Look for blocks in the 5×5 column and the 3×3 base. Common culprits are leaves from another tree, a roof or overhang, a hanging block, or a player-built structure. Remove the blocks or move the planting site.

2. The saplings do not form one square
If you are aiming for the large tree, confirm that all four saplings are present and touch each other in one 2×2 block. A gap or a fifth sapling in the group can stop the large form from growing.
3. You expected a large tree from a single sapling
One sapling always grows the 1×1 form. This is not a fault. Add three more saplings in a square if you want the large tree.
4. Bone meal seems to do nothing
Bone meal speeds growth but cannot override the clearance rules. Re-check the column and base, then apply bone meal again.

Harvesting and building a repeatable wood supply
Jungle saplings drop less often from leaves than saplings from many other tree types. Farming from one tree can therefore struggle to replace the sapling you used. The tree-farming guidance on the Minecraft Wiki suggests two ways to make small-tree farming more practical: using a tool with the Fortune enchantment to increase leaf drops, and starting with a larger supply of saplings.
For a one-off large tree, harvest it once and plan a safe route down the trunk. For a repeatable wood supply, keep a reserve of saplings and budget time for harvesting, because each large tree takes more work than a regular one.

Sapling drop rates and the Fortune effect should also be checked in your edition, because they are the most likely values to vary between releases.
The Bottom Line
Plant one jungle sapling for the regular tree or four in a complete 2×2 square for the large tree, then keep the 3×3 base and 5×5 column above it clear. If growth fails, check for obstructions first, then confirm the square.
