You do not need to install Bing to use it. Open any web browser, go to Bing.com, and press Enter. The Bing search box is ready for your query.
Open Bing directly in a browser
- Open a browser such as Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.
- Select the address bar. You can usually do this with Ctrl+L on Windows or Command+L on a Mac.
- Enter
https://www.bing.com. - Press Enter or select the browser’s Go button.
Bing’s homepage should load with its search box. Type your search terms there and press Enter to submit the search. Suggestions may appear as you type beneath the search box.
Microsoft’s instructions describe the same basic process: open a browser and go to Bing.com. Bing is a web search engine, so this basic method does not require a Bing installation or a separate desktop program. Microsoft Support explains how to reach Bing and manage SafeSearch.

You can search without first opening the Bing homepage. Enter your search directly in the browser’s address bar and press Enter:

weather in SeattleThe browser sends the query to its configured default search engine. In Microsoft Edge, this will use Bing if Bing is selected as the default. If Google, DuckDuckGo, or another provider is configured, the address-bar search will use that provider instead. Microsoft documents this behavior in its guidance for searching from Microsoft Edge and other browsers.
Make Bing the default search engine in Microsoft Edge
Changing the homepage and changing the address-bar search engine are separate actions. To make searches typed into Edge’s address bar use Bing:
- In Edge, perform one search from the address bar using Bing. For example, enter
https://www.bing.comor search for a term and load the Bing results page. - Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Select Search and connected services.
- Select Address bar and search.
- Under Search engine used in the address bar, choose Bing.
If Bing is not listed, search with Bing from the address bar first, then return to Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected services > Address bar and search. The browser should then recognize Bing as an available search engine. These are the current menu locations in Microsoft’s Edge instructions.
Set Bing as the homepage
If you want Bing to open whenever you select your browser’s Home button or start a new browser session, set it as the homepage separately:

- Open Bing.com.
- Find the link in Bing’s homepage customization area for setting Bing.com as your homepage.
- Select the link and follow the browser’s instructions.
Bing may not be able to change the homepage automatically in every browser. If that happens, use the instructions shown by your browser to confirm the homepage setting. Setting Bing as the homepage does not automatically change searches made from the address bar; configure the default search engine separately. Use Bing search operators
Once Bing is open, operators can narrow the results or control which words Bing includes. Use uppercase AND, OR, and NOT; Bing may treat lowercase versions as ordinary stop words.

Change Bing SafeSearch
After reaching Bing.com, you can control how strictly Bing filters potentially adult content:
- Select the Global navigation icon in the upper-right corner of Bing.com.
- Select Settings.
- Select More.
- Choose Strict, Moderate, or Off.
- Select Save.
Strict applies the strongest filtering, Moderate filters explicit images and videos but may show text that refers to adult content, and Off removes Bing’s SafeSearch filtering. Organization, device, or network settings may prevent you from changing this option.
Sign in for work or school results
Bing can show Microsoft Search results from an organization, including people, files, SharePoint sites, Teams or Viva Engage conversations, groups, and locations. To connect a work or school account:
- On Bing, select Sign in.
- Next to Work or school account, select Connect.
- Enter your organization’s credentials if prompted.
The organization’s Microsoft 365 configuration and your permissions determine which results are available. A personal Microsoft account does not automatically provide access to a company’s internal search results.

If Bing does not open

Do not follow old instructions telling you to install Bing Desktop just to search Bing. Microsoft says Bing Desktop has been incorporated into other products and points users who want a daily Bing desktop image to Bing Wallpaper instead. Neither program is required to open Bing.com.

How do I go directly to Bing?
Open a browser, enter https://www.bing.com in the address bar, and press Enter.
Can I search Bing without opening Bing.com first?
Yes. Type your query in the browser address bar and press Enter. This uses the browser’s configured default search engine, so select Bing in the browser settings if another provider opens.
How do I make Bing my default search engine in Edge?
Go to … > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected services > Address bar and search. Select Bing under Search engine used in the address bar.

Do I need to install Bing?
No. Bing works as a website at Bing.com. You only need a browser and an internet connection.
Is Bing the same as my browser homepage?
No. The homepage controls what opens from the Home button or at startup, while the default search-engine setting controls searches typed into the address bar. They must be configured separately.
How do I change Bing SafeSearch?
On Bing.com, select the Global navigation icon, choose Settings and then More, select Strict, Moderate, or Off, and select Save.
