First, wake the computer with a mouse movement or keyboard press. If the Alienware monitor remains blank, check whether it has power and whether it is receiving video: a sleeping display and a powered display with no signal need different fixes. Work through the checks below before changing model-specific settings or updating firmware.
Tell sleep from a missing video signal
A monitor may enter Power Save because the computer is asleep, or it may be on but not receiving a usable video signal. Watch for a “No Signal” message or similar, and check the monitor’s power indicator. Indicator colors and on-screen messages vary by model, so use them as clues rather than universal codes. Dell describes both the computer-sleep check and the no-signal distinction in its monitor troubleshooting guidance.
- If waking the computer restores the picture, the display was responding to the computer’s sleep state.
- If the monitor is powered but reports no signal, check the selected input and video connection.
- If the power light is off, check the monitor’s power connection and power source separately from the video cable.
Try these fixes in order
- Wake the computer. Move the mouse or press a key. Dell specifically recommends this check for the Alienware AW2524HF when the computer may be in power-saving mode. If the computer does not respond, address the computer’s sleep or power state first.
- Check that the monitor has power. Confirm it is switched on and its power cable is firmly connected. If its indicator is off, focus on power rather than assuming the video signal is at fault. Indicator behavior differs among models.
- Select the connected input. Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) using its controls and select the HDMI or DisplayPort input that is actually connected. A correct cable will not help if the monitor is listening to a different input. Dell includes input selection in its AW2524HF troubleshooting guide.
- Reseat the video cable. Disconnect and reconnect it at both the monitor and computer, checking that the plugs are secure and the connectors are undamaged. If possible, test with a known-good cable compatible with the ports on both devices. Identify the ports before choosing HDMI or DisplayPort; the model and connection requirements are not the same for every setup. Dell’s AW2524HF guide recommends checking the connection and trying another cable when available.
- Restart the computer. If waking it and checking the input and cable do not restore the picture, restart the computer. Dell lists restarting as a next step when an Alienware display has no input signal.
Check the Power Saving setting only if your model has it
Alienware OSD menus and behavior vary by model. The AW3420DW manual documents a Power Saving setting that is On by default, allowing the monitor to sleep with the system. It also says, “Selecting Off may prevent the monitor from going into deep sleep and being unable to wake up.” This is guidance for the AW3420DW, not a universal setting or guaranteed fix for every Alienware display.
For the AW3420DW, consult the manual’s Power Saving instructions for the control and its effect. On another model, look up that monitor’s own manual before changing a similarly named option. The AW3420DW manual also notes that pressing a rear-panel button can wake the display.

Run the monitor’s built-in diagnostics if the screen stays blank
Use the diagnostic procedure in the exact model’s manual. Dell’s general troubleshooting guidance describes disconnecting the video cables and checking whether the monitor shows a “No Signal” message or similar. A built-in color test that displays successfully suggests the monitor can produce an image, so the computer, cable, or connection is a more likely place to investigate than a failed panel. Follow Dell’s diagnostic instructions for the applicable procedure; do not assume every model uses the same button sequence.
Consider firmware only after confirming the exact model
Firmware is not available for every Dell monitor, and an update is not a first-line Power Save fix. Check the exact model’s Drivers & Downloads page to see whether Dell offers monitor firmware. If you proceed, use Dell’s current firmware update instructions; Dell’s manual-installation guidance includes disabling sleep and connecting the monitor’s USB upstream cable directly. Availability and update versions can change, so do not install firmware intended for a different model.

If it still will not wake
If the monitor has power, the correct input is selected, and the cable has been checked, use the model-specific diagnostics to determine whether the monitor can display its own test image. If it cannot, follow Dell’s support guidance for that model. If it passes, continue investigating the computer’s video output and the connection between the two devices. Keep the exact model name, connection type, and any on-screen message at hand when consulting support, since they determine which menu and troubleshooting procedure apply.
