You can often relax wrinkles in pants without a steamer. If the care label allows tumble drying, use a short dryer cycle with a clean, moist towel, then remove the pants promptly and hang them. If dryer heat is not allowed, lightly mist the creases with water, smooth the fabric by hand and let the pants dry while hanging. These methods may not remove a sharp, set-in crease, so follow the garment’s care label and your dryer manual.
Choose a method that suits the pants
Start with the care label: it determines whether dryer heat is appropriate and whether the fabric can be dampened. Then consider how deep the wrinkles are and whether you have access to a dryer.

Use a dryer and damp towel for dryer-safe pants
- Check the pants’ care label and confirm that tumble drying is permitted. If the label says “No heat,” do not use a heated dryer setting.
- Put the pants in the dryer with a clean hand towel that is moist, not soaking wet.
- Choose a short cycle and a temperature allowed by the care label. Whirlpool gives about 10–15 minutes as general guidance for its method; that is not a guarantee, and fabrics and dryer settings vary.
- Remove the pants as soon as the cycle ends. While they are warm, hang them and smooth the legs and seams by hand.
Whirlpool explains that moisture and heat can help relax fabric fibers, and notes that delicate items may need lower heat. Its medium- or high-heat example should not be used for pants whose care label disallows that temperature. Check the dryer manual as well as the garment label.

- Hang the pants on a hanger.
- Lightly mist the creased areas with water. Avoid soaking the fabric.
- Gently smooth the cloth with your hands, drawing it taut and straightening the legs and seams.
- Leave the pants hanging until they are dry.
The FTC defines “smooth by hand” as removing wrinkles and straightening seams and facings by hand while the garment is wet. If you want to add a product to the water, test it on a hidden area first: a mixture that works on one fabric may spot another.

Try bathroom steam as a travel-friendly fallback
Hang the pants in the bathroom while running a hot shower, placing them where they will be exposed to humid air but not splashed. Afterward, smooth the legs by hand and leave the pants hanging to finish drying. Whirlpool cautions that this approach may not work well on severe wrinkles or certain fabrics, so use it as a fallback rather than expecting a crisp, crease-free finish.
Use wrinkle-release spray only as directed
A commercial wrinkle-release spray is optional. Follow its product label and test it on an inconspicuous area before treating the visible fabric. Downy’s directions for its Wrinkle Releaser say to spray the outside of the fabric from 8 inches away in a sweeping motion until it is just slightly damp; the product guidance calls for more spray on heavy fabrics or severe wrinkles. Those directions apply to that product, not automatically to every spray.

Know what the care-label terms mean
The FTC’s care-label guidance defines “No heat” as setting the dryer to operate without heat. “Do not iron” means the garment is not to be smoothed or finished with an iron. “Smooth by hand” means that, while the garment is wet, wrinkles are removed and seams and facings are straightened by hand. Follow the label’s instructions and warnings rather than substituting a method the garment cannot tolerate.
