A non-smart TV usually can’t join Wi-Fi or run streaming apps on its own. To watch internet video on it, connect an external streaming player to the TV—typically through HDMI—then connect that player to Wi-Fi. The player runs the apps and sends their picture and sound to the television.

What you need before you start

  • An available HDMI input: The Roku players, Fire TV Stick, and Apple TV setup instructions covered here connect through HDMI. Check the TV’s ports and note which input you use. Roku’s TV requirements, Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup guide, and Apple’s setup instructions describe HDMI connections.
  • A streaming player and power: The player needs power as well as an HDMI connection. Follow the power instructions for its exact model.
  • A Wi-Fi network and its password: You’ll enter these through the player’s on-screen setup.

If your TV has no HDMI input, don’t assume that an adapter will solve the problem. Compatibility depends on the TV’s inputs, the player’s output, and whether the signals can be converted correctly; the setup guidance cited above does not establish a reliable converter for every older TV.

How to connect the streaming player

  1. Connect the player to the TV. Plug a streaming stick directly into an HDMI port, or connect a player with the HDMI cable specified by its manufacturer. If the device is difficult to fit beside the TV, an HDMI extender may help with clearance; it does not provide Wi-Fi.
  2. Connect the player to power. Use the supplied adapter and follow the model’s directions. Some TV USB ports may not supply enough power. Roku notes this limitation, and Amazon advises plugging a Fire TV Stick’s power adapter into a wall outlet rather than powering it directly from the TV’s USB port. See the Roku setup instructions and Fire TV Stick setup guide.
  3. Select the matching HDMI input. With the TV remote, choose the input where you connected the player. If the TV shows a blank screen, check this setting first.
  4. Follow the player’s on-screen setup. Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter its password when prompted. Device and service account requirements vary; Amazon’s Fire TV setup, for example, includes signing in to an Amazon account. Check the current requirements for your device, service, and location.

Once setup is complete, open streaming apps from the player’s interface. The TV displays the player’s output; connecting the player does not add internet access or streaming apps to the TV’s own menus, tuner, or other native functions.

What to check Why it matters
TV connection The reviewed Roku, Fire TV Stick, and Apple TV setup paths use HDMI. Confirm that your TV has a free, working HDMI input.
Internet connection The setup guides support Wi-Fi. Ethernet is available on some Roku and Apple TV models, but port availability depends on the exact model. See Roku’s setup instructions and Apple’s setup instructions.
Resolution and HDR A 4K-capable player does not make a non-4K TV display 4K. The TV and the rest of the setup must support the selected picture capability. Apple’s Apple TV 4K technical specifications describe that device’s capabilities.
Power and placement Check the model’s power requirements and whether a stick fits comfortably at the HDMI port. Use the manufacturer’s recommended power adapter if the TV’s USB port is inadequate.
Apps, accounts, and availability App access and account requirements vary by device, service, and location. Confirm that the services you use are available for the player and region where you’ll use it.

Fix common setup problems

The TV shows a blank screen

Confirm the player is powered and that the TV is set to the HDMI input it occupies. If the stick is loose or blocked by the TV’s housing, check whether an extender is appropriate for the device.

The player will not stay powered on

Use the supplied wall adapter as directed rather than relying on the TV’s USB port. Some USB ports do not provide enough power for a streaming device.

Your Wi-Fi network is missing or the connection fails

You are considering a phone hotspot

A hotspot can provide a temporary internet connection, but streaming and device updates can use substantial mobile data. Check your mobile plan before using it this way. Roku also flags data use in its internet connection guidance.

This is an option only if your particular streaming-player model has an Ethernet port; check its specifications before buying or connecting cables.

What to expect from the result

The streaming player is the device that connects to the network and runs the streaming interface. HDMI carries its picture and sound to the TV. The TV itself remains non-smart, and its built-in features do not become internet-connected as a result.
