To get walking directions in Apple Maps on iPhone, find your destination, tap the directions button, select the walking route, then tap Go to start turn-by-turn guidance. Choose Steps to read the directions without spoken navigation.
Get walking directions on iPhone

Open Maps and find the destination. Search for an address or touch and hold the destination’s location on the map.

Tap the directions button, then select the walking travel mode if it isn’t already selected.

Review the route options before starting. Where the information is available, compare estimated time and elevation; Apple says you can choose a route that best avoids hills, stairs, or busy roads. Options differ by location. Apple’s walking-directions guide explains route selection.

Tap Go for turn-by-turn navigation, or tap Steps to inspect the instructions as a list. If the route starts somewhere other than My Location, Maps shows Steps instead of Go and does not speak directions.
During navigation, Maps can speak walking-specific instructions for turns and maneuvers, including walking up stairs. You can switch to a route overview or review upcoming turns while following the route. See Apple’s guide to viewing a route overview or list of turns.

Adjust spoken directions and voice
Change audio during a route
While navigating, tap the Audio Control button and choose an available spoken-directions option. To set the default volume, go to Settings > Apps > Maps > Spoken Directions. The available controls may vary with your iOS version. Apple’s spoken-directions instructions describe these options.
Change the voice or language
To change the voice or language used for spoken directions, open Settings > Siri and adjust the Language or Voice control. The exact labels can vary by iOS version.

Requirements and walking-specific options

Turn-by-turn spoken directions require an internet connection and Precise Location to be enabled. Spoken directions and other features may not be available in every country or region. See Apple’s requirements for spoken directions.

For immersive walking instructions, Apple documents Raise to View under Settings > Apps > Maps > Walking. After starting directions, raise the iPhone and tap the Pedestrian AR button. Availability can vary.

Enhanced, also under Settings > Apps > Maps > Walking, uses the camera and motion sensors to improve location and heading accuracy while walking. It is optional; Apple says turning it off can decrease battery usage.

Ask Siri or use related Maps options
You can ask Siri, “Give me walking directions home.” Apple also documents following walking directions on Apple Watch and downloading offline maps for areas where you expect to lose internet access. For those features, consult Apple’s general Maps guide and its instructions for asking Siri for directions.
