Press Ctrl+Space in the editor to request a suggestion manually. If the list appears, focus on automatic-suggestion settings; if it does not, check the language service, Workspace Trust, and language-specific requirements before changing extensions. VS Code calls its code-completion feature IntelliSense, and what it can suggest depends on the active language and its language service.
First, identify what stopped working
There are three different symptoms to separate: no suggestion list at all, no automatic popups even though manual suggestions work, or a list that appears but is missing members from a library. The right fix depends on which one you see.
In a Windows or Linux editor, press Ctrl+Space. On macOS, the VS Code documentation shows ⌃+Space. IntelliSense can also appear when you type a language trigger character, such as a period in JavaScript. Microsoft’s IntelliSense documentation describes both ways to invoke suggestions.

Check automatic suggestion settings
VS Code settings can come from your user profile, the current workspace, or language-specific configuration. Workspace settings apply to that project and can override user settings. An extension may also contribute relevant settings.

- Open the Settings editor and search for
@modified. This filter helps reveal settings that have been changed from their defaults or explicitly configured. - Search for
editor.quickSuggestionsandeditor.suggestOnTriggerCharacters. The first affects automatic suggestions while typing; the second controls suggestions triggered by characters such as a period. - Check whether the value is set at user, workspace, or language-specific scope. If a relevant value is clearly causing the problem, change or reset that setting only.
To review the setting behavior, see Microsoft’s IntelliSense documentation and basic editing documentation. Avoid clearing the entire settings file: it can remove unrelated customizations and is unnecessary when one setting is at fault.
Restart VS Code once if no suggestions appear
Microsoft notes, “If you find IntelliSense has stopped working, the language service may not be running.” Restart VS Code once as a low-cost diagnostic step. A restart is not a guaranteed fix; if suggestions remain absent, continue with the checks below rather than repeating it.

Check whether the project is in Restricted Mode
Look for a Restricted Mode indicator or Workspace Trust prompt. In Restricted Mode, extensions that do not support Workspace Trust can be disabled, and some language features may be limited. That can affect code completion even when the extension remains installed.
If you recognize and trust the project’s authors and contents, use the Workspace Trust interface to trust it. Do not trust unfamiliar code or disable Workspace Trust as a blanket troubleshooting measure. See Microsoft’s Workspace Trust documentation for details.

Check the language service and extension
VS Code includes IntelliSense for JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, HTML, CSS, SCSS, and Less. Other languages may require a language extension, and an extension may not provide every IntelliSense feature. Microsoft advises consulting the relevant extension’s documentation when completion is missing or incomplete.
- Confirm which language VS Code detects for the open file and identify the extension responsible for that language’s completion.
- Read the extension’s README and support notes for its requirements and known limitations. On its Marketplace Details page, the Support link leads to the extension’s issue repository.
- If you suspect a conflict, temporarily disable other extensions through the Extensions view as a diagnostic isolation step. Re-enable them after checking; this is not a universal fix and does not require uninstalling your language extension.

For JavaScript, check whether type declarations are missing
If suggestions appear but omit methods or variables from a library, missing type declaration files may explain the gap. For JavaScript projects, Microsoft recommends installing the corresponding npm or yarn package when applicable. This diagnosis is specific to JavaScript typings; it should not be assumed to explain missing completions in every language.
Consider very large workspaces
Microsoft says IntelliSense may be partially disabled for performance in very large workspaces. If completion problems are confined to a large project, consider excluding generated or irrelevant folders—such as node_modules or build output—with files.exclude or search.exclude, as appropriate for that project.

This is a targeted performance check, not a setting to apply indiscriminately. Exclude only folders that do not need to participate in the project’s workflow. See the IntelliSense troubleshooting guidance.
When to contact extension support
If the settings, trust, and workspace checks do not restore the expected language feature, follow the extension’s current documentation or use its Marketplace Details page’s Support link. Include the details that help distinguish an editor-wide issue from a language-specific one:
