Connect matching audio ports on your Vizio TV and receiver or soundbar: use HDMI ARC/eARC at both ends when available, or use optical/SPDIF or analog RCA if both devices have those matching ports. Then select the appropriate audio input and output settings for your exact models.
Choose a connection your TV and audio system both support
Check the model numbers and rear-panel labels on both devices before buying a cable. Vizio notes that port locations and counts vary by model; its E55-C1 manual illustrates HDMI ARC, optical, and analog options, but it is a legacy example rather than a guide to every Vizio TV.
| Connection | Use it when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | The TV and receiver or soundbar each have a port labeled ARC or eARC. | Connect those labeled ports. eARC features require eARC support in the connected audio system; an ordinary HDMI port is not necessarily an ARC/eARC port. See the V655-H9 V-Series manual. |
| Optical/SPDIF | The TV has an optical audio output and the audio system has an optical input. | This is a digital alternative. The audio formats available depend on the exact TV, audio system, source, and settings; the E55-C1 manual does not establish support for every combination. |
| Analog RCA | Both devices have matching analog audio connections. | Older Vizio documentation shows RCA as a stereo connection, not a digital multichannel route. Do not expect it to provide the same connection as digital surround audio. |
Current model specifications also demonstrate why checking your exact TV matters: the M43Q6M-K04 specifications list HDMI ARC/eARC and SPDIF. Specifications for other models may differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConnect the TV and receiver or soundbar
- Identify both models. Find the TV and audio-system model numbers, then check their manuals or port labels for HDMI ARC/eARC, optical/SPDIF, or matching RCA audio connections.
- Turn both devices off. The Vizio E55-C1 manual directs users to switch off the TV and external audio device before connecting.
- Connect one compatible path. For HDMI, connect the TV port labeled ARC or eARC to the corresponding audio-system port. For optical, connect the TV’s optical output to the system’s optical input. For RCA, connect the matching analog outputs and inputs. A regular HDMI port does not imply ARC/eARC support.
- Power on and select the audio input. Turn on both devices and choose the connected input on the receiver or soundbar if needed.
- Check the TV’s audio settings. Use the settings described in the manual for your specific Vizio model. Menu names and format options vary by model.
Set the Vizio audio output for your model
The Vizio V655-H9 V-Series manual describes audio controls under Menu > Audio, including Digital Audio Out for optical and HDMI ARC and an eARC toggle. Those labels and that menu path are specific to that manual; they are not a universal Vizio interface.
#1 Best Overall
- Simplified setup and control - Unlock the highest-quality audio formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X with the simplicity of a single HDMI eARC connection. This one-cable connection also enables you to control the soundbar with your TV remote, reducing clutter and ensuring seamless device integration. (Soundbar remote control not included.)
- Stream easy - Wirelessly stream your favorite playlists, podcasts, audiobooks and more directly to your soundbar thanks to Bluetooth 5.2 support.
- The soundbar for every home - Premium fabric, soft textures, and a low-profile 33-inch enclosure ensure the soundbar fits your space with a touch of elegance that complements any décor.
- Paired for perfection - When connected to a VIZIO TV, you’ll have instant access to the integrated audio control menu, a big-screen interface which makes adjusting advanced soundbar settings easier than ever.
- Note: This Vizio Soundbar unit does Not include any physical Remote control, but can be controlled via any Smartphone by downloading the "Vizio MobileApp" or simply using your existing TV Remote control via HDMI eARC.
The manual also cautions: “Your connected sound bar or audio receiver must support eARC in order to receive uncompressed audio.” In other words, an eARC-capable TV alone does not make the audio system eARC-capable. Check both manuals for supported connections and formats.
If you get no sound or not the expected audio
- Confirm that the cable connects matching output and input ports, especially ports explicitly labeled ARC/eARC.
- Check that the receiver or soundbar is set to the input used for the connection.
- Review the TV’s audio-output options and the audio system’s manual; menu names and supported formats vary by model.
- If you are using optical or RCA, verify that both devices have the corresponding ports and that the selected input matches the cable.
There is no single audio setting that can be prescribed for every Vizio TV and audio system. Use the format and output options documented for your particular models rather than assuming that PCM, Auto, or Digital is always correct.

Check specifications before choosing a cable
A cable can connect compatible ports, but it cannot add ARC/eARC or optical support to a device that lacks it. Vizio’s model pages show differing port lists—for example, the D65x-G4 specifications, M512a-H6 specifications, and SB2021n-J6 specifications. Confirm the ports and supported formats for your exact TV and audio system before selecting an HDMI or optical cable.
