Use more than one warning channel: keep Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) enabled on a compatible phone, turn on severe-weather notifications in a weather app, and consider an alert-capable NOAA Weather Radio at home. None guarantees delivery. When a Tornado Warning applies to your area, stop troubleshooting and shelter immediately.

Watch or warning: know which action to take

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes. Be ready: identify your shelter location and monitor updates. A tornado warning means a tornado has been indicated or reported and you should take action now. The National Weather Service (NWS) puts it simply: “A Tornado Warning means take action!” (NWS Weather-Ready Nation tornado safety guidance.)

Go to your designated safe place as soon as a warning applies; do not delay to compare apps, check a second source, or fix a receiver. Use additional sources for information only if doing so does not postpone sheltering.

Set up phone alerts with Wireless Emergency Alerts

WEA is the baseline phone alert route. Participating wireless carriers broadcast certain emergency alerts, including tornado warnings, to compatible phones in or near an affected area. It does not require installing an app or paying for a separate subscription. Whether a phone receives an alert depends on its compatibility, carrier participation, and connection to relevant cell towers. (NWS: Wireless Emergency Alerts; NWS severe-weather safety guidance.)

  1. Open your phone’s Settings and search for Emergency Alerts or Wireless Emergency Alerts.
  2. Make sure emergency alerts are enabled. Menu names and available controls vary by phone, operating-system version, and carrier; consult your phone maker or carrier for current model-specific steps.
  3. Keep the phone where you can hear or notice its alert, especially overnight. WEA can use a distinctive sound and vibration, but the phone must be able to receive the alert.

WEA is geographically targeted through cell towers, not a precise location sensor. Tower coverage can extend beyond the warning boundary, so an alert does not prove your exact location is inside the warned area. Conversely, not receiving one does not prove there is no danger. Follow official warnings for your location through other available sources as well. (NWS WEA explanation.)

Enable warning notifications in a weather app

NWS lists mobile apps among the ways to receive real-time warnings. In the app you choose, enable severe-weather or tornado warning notifications and review its location permissions so it can provide alerts relevant to you. The exact labels and behavior differ by app, so check that app’s settings and help information. An app is an additional route, not a requirement for WEA. (NWS severe-weather safety guidance.)

  1. Check the NWS information for your area to confirm that a transmitter can serve your location. NWS describes reception up to 40 miles from a transmitter as a general rule of thumb, not a guaranteed range; terrain, antenna, receiver, and local conditions affect reception. (NWS NWR information.)
  2. Choose an alert-capable NOAA Weather Radio receiver. If you want county-specific alerts, check that it supports SAME.
  3. Use the receiver manual to select the relevant county or counties and enter their SAME codes. Confirm the radio is tuned and positioned for reception, then test its alert function as the manual directs.
  4. Keep it powered and audible where people sleep or spend time. Check reception and settings if you move the radio or change locations.

A SAME-capable receiver with an audible alert is a useful category to consider, but no particular model is established here as tested or recommended. Verify coverage and setup for your location before relying on any receiver.

How the warning channels differ

Channel Where it works Setup and dependencies Can it wake you?
Phone WEA Compatible phones connected to participating carriers’ towers in or around an alert area; tower coverage can extend beyond the warning boundary. Keep emergency alerts enabled; phone capability and carrier participation matter. No separate app or subscription is required. It has a distinctive alert sound and vibration; whether you notice it depends on the phone and its settings.
Weather app Depends on the app’s alert and location behavior. Install an app, enable warning notifications, and review its location permissions. App costs and comparative reliability are not established here. Depends on the app’s notification behavior and your phone settings.
NOAA Weather Radio Within usable local transmitter reception; coverage varies by location and conditions. Use an alert-capable receiver; program SAME county codes if supported and follow its manual. An alert-capable receiver can sound an audible alarm.
Broadcast, cable, satellite, or wireline alerts Through services carrying the Emergency Alert System (EAS); local radio and television can provide follow-up information. Availability depends on the service and local broadcast. Use as an additional channel. Not stated by the cited NWS material; behavior depends on the service and equipment.

NWS describes WEA and NOAA Weather Radio as two effective ways to receive warning information directly from the agency. Phone alerts, apps, radio, and broadcast services have different dependencies, so using several channels is a sensible way to reduce reliance on any single one. Use alerts while traveling—and respond first

WEA follows compatible phones connected to participating carriers’ towers, so it can provide alerts in areas beyond your home when you travel. Its tower-based coverage is not an exact boundary, and service or compatibility limitations still apply. Apps may provide another alert route depending on their location and notification settings. If you receive a Tornado Warning that applies where you are, shelter immediately rather than trying to determine which channel is most precise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At home, keep a phone alert route and an audible radio alert route available if practical. NWS also identifies apps, radio, and broadcast outlets as warning channels; local radio or television can give follow-up information after you are sheltered.
