To see your PC’s Delivery Optimization statistics in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization > Activity monitor. The page shows a breakdown of downloads by source, your average download speed, and your upload statistics, all for the current month. It is a monthly summary, not a live view of individual downloads, and the sections below explain how to read it and where to look when you need more detail.

Open the Activity monitor page

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update > Advanced options.
  3. Select Delivery Optimization > Activity monitor.

Microsoft Support describes this path for Windows 11 and notes that it is the place to “review the latest stats.” If you are following an older guide that shows a Windows 10 route, the menu labels may differ, so use the Windows 11 path above.

What the page reports

The Activity monitor page has three kinds of figures. Each one covers the current calendar month only, which is why numbers can look small at the start of a month and grow as the month goes on.

Downloads by source

The download breakdown separates bytes that came from Microsoft’s servers from bytes that came from other PCs. Delivery Optimization can draw content from several sources at once, including HTTP delivery, Microsoft Connected Cache where it is deployed, and eligible peers on your local network or the internet. Seeing the split tells you how much of your update traffic was served by peers rather than by Microsoft directly.

Average download speed

The page reports an average speed for the month. Treat it as a long-run average across all the transfers Delivery Optimization handled, not as the speed of any one update. It cannot tell you whether a particular update was slow or what caused a slowdown.

Upload statistics

The upload figures show how much your PC contributed to other PCs during the current month. If you have set a monthly upload limit, the page also shows how much of that limit remains. Uploads happen only when your sharing settings allow them, so a low or zero upload figure usually reflects those settings rather than a problem with the PC.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

How to read the numbers correctly

  • Peer use is conditional. Microsoft describes peer delivery as best effort. It depends on whether suitable peers are available, your network conditions, your device settings, and the content being delivered. A download-source figure of zero from peers does not by itself indicate a fault.
  • Savings vary. The page does not promise a particular saving or speed increase for your PC. Microsoft says efficiency varies from one environment to another, so use the figures to describe your own month, not to forecast a future one.
  • The page is not a packet trace. Activity monitor does not list individual files or show live network traffic. For that kind of detail, use the PowerShell commands described below.
  • Privacy and integrity. Microsoft states that Delivery Optimization does not access your personal files or folders, and that content received from other PCs is authenticated and verified before Windows uses it.

Get live job detail with PowerShell

When you need to see what Delivery Optimization is doing right now, or want more numbers than the settings page shows, use PowerShell. Run each command in a PowerShell window and read the output in the console. Microsoft documents both cmdlets below.

Get-DeliveryOptimizationStatus

Run Get-DeliveryOptimizationStatus to see the current jobs. Microsoft Learn says this cmdlet “returns a real-time snapshot of all current Delivery Optimization jobs.” The output includes bytes downloaded from peers and from HTTP, broken down by LAN peers, group peers, internet peers, and Connected Cache. If no job is running, the output is empty or shows no active transfers, which is expected on a PC that is not currently downloading updates.

Get-DeliveryOptimizationPerfSnap

Run Get-DeliveryOptimizationPerfSnap for a broader performance snapshot. Its fields include total bytes, average transfer sizes, cache occupancy, CPU and memory use, peer counts, and current bandwidth usage. Use it when you want to know whether Delivery Optimization is using significant resources or how much of its cache is filled, rather than which source delivered a particular file.

Fleet-level reporting for administrators

Organizations that manage many devices do not need to check each PC by hand. The Windows Update for Business Delivery Optimization Report summarizes observed bandwidth savings across enrolled devices over the past 28 days. Microsoft Learn also gives typical enterprise peer-to-peer efficiency as 30% to 50%, and says some customers reach 60% to 70% under specified conditions involving larger devices and groups. Those ranges describe enterprise deployments; they are not expected results for a single home PC. The Microsoft Learn pages do not show a publication year for these figures.

Reduce network use without losing the statistics

Activity monitor is a reporting page. It does not change how Delivery Optimization behaves, so you control network use through the settings on the same Delivery Optimization page:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Download and upload limits. Microsoft documents download bandwidth limits and upload bandwidth limits, plus a monthly upload cap. Download limits apply to automatic updates only, not to downloads you start yourself, such as a Windows Update you run manually or a Microsoft Store download.
  • Allow downloads from other devices. Set this to Devices on my local network if you want to keep peer delivery on your own network and avoid exchanging content with internet peers. Microsoft’s instructions note that Windows Update and Store downloads then continue directly from Microsoft.
  • Turn sharing off. Turning the setting off prevents your PC from downloading from or uploading to other PCs. Updates and Store downloads still arrive directly from Microsoft.

Changing these settings affects future activity. The statistics already shown for the current month will remain until the month rolls over.
