If the Samsung Keyboard is missing, first select it as the default keyboard, then restart your Galaxy device. If that does not work, check for updates and test in Safe Mode to find out whether a downloaded app is interfering. Save clearing keyboard data and factory reset for later: clearing data removes keyboard settings and saved words, while a factory reset erases device data.
First identify where the keyboard is missing
Check whether the keyboard is absent everywhere, missing only in one app, or unavailable only when entering a lock-screen password. These cases can point to different next steps. Samsung lists software glitches, third-party app conflicts, outdated software, and low storage as possible causes, but the symptom alone does not identify which one affects your device. Menu names and paths can vary by model, carrier, and software version.
Set Samsung Keyboard as the default
- Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default.
- Tap Default keyboard, then choose Samsung Keyboard.
- Return to an app with a text-entry field and check whether the keyboard appears.
Samsung recommends the preinstalled keyboard in its keyboard troubleshooting guidance. If the problem began after installing a third-party keyboard, switching back is a useful first check; Samsung advises contacting that app’s developer for issues with the third-party keyboard itself.

Restart and optimize the device
Close apps you are not using, then, if the option is available, open Settings > Device care > Optimize now. Restart the phone or tablet and try typing again. Samsung includes optimization and a restart among its early troubleshooting steps for minor software and background-activity problems.

Check for a software update
- Open Settings > Software update.
- Tap Download and install or Check for updates, depending on your device and carrier.
- Install any offered update, then test the keyboard again.
Samsung has also documented an empty space below Samsung Keyboard as a specific issue associated with One UI 6.1 and advised keeping software updated. That is a version-specific display problem, not evidence that every missing keyboard has the same cause. See Samsung’s One UI 6.1 keyboard guidance.
Use Safe Mode to check for app interference
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps, helping you determine whether one is interfering. Samsung describes model-dependent ways to enter it, including holding the volume-down button during startup or touching and holding Power off in the power menu. Follow the method for your Galaxy model; button sequences and access to the power menu can differ.

- If the keyboard works in Safe Mode: A downloaded app may be responsible. Restart normally, remove recently installed apps one at a time, and test after each removal.
- If it still does not work: Continue with the cache and data steps below.
To leave Safe Mode, restart the device normally. Samsung’s keyboard troubleshooting steps explain the app-conflict check. For a keyboard missing on the lock screen, Safe Mode is particularly useful: Samsung says some third-party keyboards may not appear there, and Safe Mode sets Samsung Keyboard as the default. Try clearing the cache before clearing data. Cache clearing is the less disruptive step; clearing data resets the app and removes personal settings or saved app data. Samsung’s general app cache and data instructions use Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage, where you can tap Clear cache.

If that does not help, Samsung’s US keyboard procedure is to open the app’s storage settings, force stop Samsung Keyboard, and clear its data. Samsung Keyboard may be listed among system apps, so you may first need to enable Show system apps in the Apps list. Clearing data removes keyboard settings, including saved words; review that loss before proceeding. Samsung also describes a keyboard reset option in its keyboard settings guidance, which can reset settings, remove learned predictions or touch-recognition data, and clear cache.
Keep the lock-screen problem on its own path
If you can type in apps but cannot bring up the keyboard to enter a lock-screen password, try Safe Mode before considering a reset. Samsung says some third-party keyboards may not appear on the lock screen; in Safe Mode, Samsung Keyboard becomes the default. If you regain access, select Samsung Keyboard as the default for normal use as well. See Samsung’s instructions for a missing lock-screen keyboard.

Factory reset only as a last resort
Samsung lists a factory data reset after other troubleshooting steps. Back up important data first: a reset erases device data, and you will need to set up the device again. You may also need the account or lock-screen credentials required during setup. If the keyboard is needed to unlock the device, try the Safe Mode route before taking this step.
Tablet-only fallback: use a compatible physical keyboard
Samsung says compatible book cover keyboards are available for Galaxy tablets. This can provide a way to type when the on-screen keyboard is unavailable, but it does not repair the missing virtual keyboard. Check compatibility with the exact tablet model before choosing an accessory; this is a tablet fallback, not a general recommendation for Galaxy phones.
