For better sound from wired headphones, first confirm the connection is compatible and selected as the active audio output. Then set system and app volume, check balance if one side is quieter, and adjust EQ only if it improves a specific listening problem. A DAC or lossless setting may help with particular devices and sources, but neither is a universal requirement.

Start with the connection and output

Sound settings cannot fix an unsupported adapter or a plug that is not making a reliable connection. Before changing EQ, check the physical path from your headphones to the device.

  1. Push the connector fully into the headphone jack or adapter. Inspect the cable and adapter for damage, and try the headphones with another known-compatible source if available.
  2. If you are using USB-C headphones or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, confirm that both the device and accessory support USB-C digital audio. Google specifically advises checking digital-audio compatibility for USB-C accessories and adapters: Google Pixel Help: Connect headphones to your Pixel phone.
  3. Check the device’s audio-output selection and select the wired headphones if they are not already active. Menu names vary across phones and computers; on a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output. For a device plugged into the Mac’s sound port, Apple says to choose Headphones: Apple Support: Change the sound output settings on Mac.
  4. Raise the device’s media volume and check the player app’s volume separately. On Mac, the app’s volume cannot exceed the level set for system output, so raise the system output first if the app is already turned up.

What to check with USB-C on Pixel

Google says Pixel phones can use USB-C audio accessories, and a 3.5 mm accessory can connect through an adapter on a Pixel without a headphone jack. The USB-C accessory or adapter must support digital audio. Pixel USB-C earbuds also need a host device that supports USB-C digital audio; some devices may require an audio setting to be enabled. Check Google’s guidance for USB-C accessories and Pixel USB-C earbuds, as well as your device and adapter specifications.

Fix left-right imbalance or difficult stereo audio

If one side is quieter, first reseat the connector and check the cable, adapter, and headphone connection. If the imbalance remains, inspect the device’s left-right balance setting. Mono audio can help when stereo separation makes content difficult to hear, but it combines the left and right channels rather than preserving stereo.

  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Use EQ and hearing accommodations for a specific reason

There is no universally optimal EQ curve established for every headphone and listener. If you want to change the tone, make a small, reversible adjustment and compare the same passage at roughly matched loudness; a louder version can seem better even when the EQ itself is not helping.

On iPhone, Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations can adjust certain frequencies and soft sounds, but Apple limits the feature to supported Apple and Beats headphones. It is not a general tuning control guaranteed to work with any wired headphones. See Apple’s iPhone audio accessibility guidance.

Decide whether you need a DAC

A DAC (digital-to-analog converter) turns digital audio into the analog signal headphones use. It may be built into a phone, computer, or USB-C adapter; a separate external DAC is not automatically necessary just because headphones are wired. The relevant questions are whether the connection is compatible, whether the built-in or adapter DAC supports the playback format you want, and whether the source can drive your particular headphones adequately.

Apple’s lossless guidance says an external DAC is needed for playback above 48 kHz on the documented iPhone and iPad path. On compatible 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, Apple documents native playback up to 96 kHz; other Macs need an external DAC above 48 kHz. These are Apple-documented device capabilities, not universal limits for all phones or laptops. Check the specifications for your exact device and adapter before buying additional hardware: Apple Support: About lossless audio in Apple Music.

High-impedance headphones on certain Macs

Apple says compatible Mac computers introduced in 2021 or later can connect high-impedance headphones directly, but support depends on the specific model and introduction year. For supported Macs, Apple lists output up to 1.25 V RMS below 150 ohms and 3 V RMS from 150 ohms to 1 kΩ. Those figures describe specified Mac headphone jacks, not every Mac, phone, or computer. Consult Apple’s model list and guidance before deciding whether an amplifier is needed: Apple Support: Use high-impedance headphones with your Mac.

Set lossless playback if your source and service support it

Lossless settings can preserve more of the source recording, but they do not guarantee an audible improvement. The result depends on the recording, service, playback chain, and listener. Apple also notes that higher-resolution playback uses more data and storage, and that Bluetooth connections are not lossless: Apple Music lossless audio guidance.

  • Mac: Music > Settings (or Preferences) > Playback.
  • Android: Apple Music > Settings > Audio Quality.
  • Windows: Apple Music > Settings > Playback.

Available options and playback limits depend on the device and service settings. On iPhone and iPad, Apple documents up to 48 kHz without an external DAC and requires an external DAC for higher sample rates. The Mac capabilities described above are model-specific.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

  • No sound: Reseat the plug, check the cable and adapter, verify USB-C digital-audio compatibility where relevant, and select the wired headphones as the output.
  • Sound is too quiet: Check both system media volume and the player’s volume. On Mac, the app cannot exceed the system output level.
  • One side is quieter: Check the connection first, then inspect left-right balance.
  • Stereo is hard to follow: Try mono audio if combining the channels addresses the problem.
  • Want a different tonal balance: Make modest EQ changes and compare at matched loudness rather than assuming a preset suits everyone.
  • Considering new hardware: Verify the device’s connector and audio support, the adapter’s digital-audio capability, and the headphones’ impedance and source requirements. Buy a DAC or amplifier only if a demonstrated compatibility or output limitation calls for one.
