For an older PS4 RPG on PS5 Pro, start with Resolution set to Automatic, calibrate HDR for the display you actually use, and leave RGB Range on Automatic. If your display supports 4K or 1440p, try Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games and compare it with the setting off. There is no single HDR, black-level, or sharpness preset that is best for every game and TV.
Start with the console’s detected video signal
Connect the PS5 Pro to the TV or monitor and open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. This screen shows information about the connected HDMI device and the console’s current output signal. PlayStation says the console detects the display’s capabilities and selects the highest available resolution when Resolution is set to Automatic. PlayStation’s resolution and video-output guide explains the available settings.
Automatic is a useful baseline. Choose a fixed resolution only to diagnose a signal problem or to meet a specific need; forcing a resolution does not itself improve a game’s image. A 4K signal requires a compatible screen and appropriate output settings. PlayStation describes 4K as almost four times the definition of 1080p HD.

Try PS4-game image enhancement, then compare
On supported PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 model group, the Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games option can improve the image quality of some PS4 games. PlayStation specifies that the display must support 4K or 1440p. This compatibility feature is not a guarantee that every older RPG will look better to every viewer.

- Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Turn on Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games if the option is available and your display supports 4K or 1440p.
- Launch the RPG and compare the image with the option turned off. If you notice unexpected gameplay behavior, turn it off; PlayStation recommends disabling it in that situation.
The exact effect can depend on the game and display. Treat the setting as something to evaluate on your own setup, not as a universal upgrade.
Set HDR for your display and game
Run Adjust HDR on the PS5 while the TV or monitor is in the picture mode you use for gaming. HDR appearance depends on the display, so copying a numeric value from another game or television is not a dependable universal calibration. If the RPG has its own HDR calibration controls, adjust those in the game as well.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. The PS5 offers two HDR behaviors:
- On When Supported: HDR is used for content that supports it; unsupported content stays in SDR.
- Always On: the console converts SDR games and apps to HDR output.
Choose according to how you prefer SDR games to look on your display. A converted HDR signal is not the same as a game rendering native HDR, and there is no universally correct choice for older RPGs.

RGB Range affects how the console and display interpret the HDMI video signal’s black and white levels. Keep it on Automatic unless you have a specific reason to suspect the connected HDMI device is reporting its range incorrectly. PlayStation’s instruction is: “Change this only when you use an HDMI device that doesn’t send RGB range information correctly.”

If blacks look raised or shadow detail appears crushed, check that the console and display agree on the signal range before changing unrelated settings such as sharpness or contrast. Do not set Full or Limited as a blanket recommendation for every TV.
Use VRR, 120 Hz, and ALLM only when the setup supports them
These features depend on both the connected display and, for VRR and 120 Hz, the game. They may affect motion or responsiveness, but they are not automatic image-quality improvements for every older RPG. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, enable a feature only if the display supports it and the game can use it. If it causes video-output problems or unexpected behavior, disable it and compare.

If the RPG offers graphics modes, use the game’s own description to weigh image detail against frame rate. The benefit of a refresh-rate feature depends on the game’s output and the display’s capabilities; enabling a console option cannot create support that the game or TV lacks.
Troubleshoot a missing or downgraded 4K 120 Hz signal
If the PS5 Pro does not provide the expected 4K 120 Hz signal, check the connection before changing picture presets:

- Confirm that the specific HDMI input supports the required features; capabilities can differ between ports, and the TV may require an HDMI setting to be enabled. Check the TV manual.
- Check that the display supports 4K at 120 Hz and that its firmware is current.
- For troubleshooting, connect the console directly to the compatible TV input rather than through an intermediary device.
- Check the cable rating. PlayStation recommends the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz when addressing this signal issue.
