For the best documented outcome in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt quest “The Play’s the Thing,” choose comedy, cast Priscilla as the Princess and Abelard as the Doppler-Prince, recruit the Puffins, and select all five correct timed lines during the performance. This route avoids the guide-reported post-play riot and earns the listed optional and performance rewards.

How to complete the quest for the best documented outcome
Choose comedy
When Priscilla asks whether the play should be a comedy or a drama, choose comedy. Gamer Guides’ walkthrough, updated 22 August 2024, reports that choosing drama leads to a fight after the show; comedy averts that riot. This affects the local scene, not whether the main quest progresses.
Get an usher
The usher objective is mandatory. You can pay Sofus 70 crowns or take his two-on-one fistfight wager. The guide reports a 140-crown wager and says a win returns the stake, so winning avoids the cost of the straightforward payment. If you would rather skip the fight, pay Sofus.
Recruit the Puffins for publicity
The Puffins objective is optional, but completing it is the route to the extra listed rewards. When you deal with the people harassing them, the walkthrough says the choices lead to a fight; using Axii is described as an XP-positive option. Witcher.tools lists 150 XP for resolving the Puffins’ problem, then 25 XP and 30 crowns after the show.

Cast Priscilla and Abelard
Choose Priscilla for the Princess. The guides list 25 XP and 20 crowns for her, compared with 25 XP and 10 crowns for Irina. For the Doppler-Prince, choose Abelard: Witcher.tools lists 110 XP and 30 crowns. The guides say Maxim earns no casting reward and may perform drunk.
Read the script, then choose the timed lines
If you need to check the dialogue before starting the performance, read the script. During the show, select these five lines in order:

One walkthrough gives an alternate wording for the fourth line: “But a heart that is base…”. The wording displayed in your game may therefore differ slightly from this list.

Witcher.tools lists the performance reward by how many lines you get right. Its quest page does not state a publication or update date, so treat these figures as that database’s reported rewards.

Other listed rewards on the route are 25 XP and 20 crowns for casting Priscilla, 110 XP and 30 crowns for casting Abelard, and 150 XP for resolving the Puffins’ problem plus 25 XP and 30 crowns after the performance. Witcher.tools reports an overall quest maximum of 1,310 XP and 130 crowns; that is its database total, not an independently tested result.

The documented differences concern the play’s tone, whether a post-show fight occurs, casting and performance rewards, and the optional Puffins objective. The guides describe Dudu revealing himself after the play, so the recommended choices do not block the quest’s main progression. The sources do not establish that these decisions change the wider game ending.
