Start with fit, not settings: choose the right physical fit for your earbuds or over-ear headphones, then use a model-specific fit test if available. A poor earbud seal can make audio sound thin and weaken isolation; app, EQ, and Bluetooth options vary by model and device.
First, identify your headphone type
Wireless headphones generally fit in one of two ways: earbuds sit in or at the ear canal, while over-ear headphones use cushions that surround the ears. The adjustment that matters most depends on which type you have.
How to get a better fit with earbuds
Try the supplied ear tips
Do not assume the preinstalled tip is the right size. Try the supplied sizes, and remember that your left and right ears may need different sizes. Insert each earbud gently and rotate it until it feels secure and comfortable. A tip that feels tight or painful is not a good fit; one that feels loose may shift or fall out. A well-seated ear tip should feel comfortable and create a seal. In Bose’s guidance for the QuietComfort Earbuds II, a sign of a good fit is that background sound becomes muffled before noise cancelling is enabled. This is a useful clue for that model, not a universal fit-test rule.

If your earbuds sound thin, have weak bass, or let in more outside sound than expected, check the seal and position before changing EQ. JBL notes that a poor seal can reduce bass and passive isolation. Do not force an earbud deeper or put up with discomfort. If one ear remains uncomfortable, try a different tip size on that side.
Use a fit test only if your model offers one
Some companion apps provide a seal or fit test; others do not. Follow your headphone’s manual or app instructions rather than assuming the feature or its control path is the same across brands. If a comfortable seal remains elusive after trying the supplied tips, compatible replacement tips may be an option, but check that they fit your exact earbud model.

How to adjust over-ear headphones
Put the marked left and right sides on the correct ears, adjust the sliders so the cushions cover your ears, and set the headband so it rests gently on top of your head. The pads should not bump or fold your ears. Avoid forcing folding parts while making adjustments.
Construction differs between models, so use the product’s own instructions if these adjustments do not produce a comfortable fit. Sony’s fit and sound guidance for the WH-ULT900N illustrates the approach for that specific headset.

What fit can—and cannot—do for noise cancelling
Physical fit provides passive isolation by helping block outside sound. Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones and electronics to counter external noise; it is a separate function. Sennheiser explains that ANC is generally more effective against low-frequency sounds such as engine hum or air conditioning than against voices and abrupt sounds. A comfortable ear-tip seal can help ANC work as intended, but it cannot make every sound disappear, particularly abrupt noise or sound in very loud environments. Adjust sound and Bluetooth settings carefully
Once the physical fit is comfortable, check your headphone’s companion app for available sound controls. If you choose to adjust EQ, make small changes and compare them using familiar music at a comfortable listening level; this is a practical listening approach, not a universal ideal EQ setting.

Bluetooth settings are also device- and model-specific. Sony’s help guide, for example, documents A2DP, codec, and connection-priority settings for a particular headset. That does not mean another headphone offers the same options, or that choosing a particular codec improves sound in every setup. Choosing headphones for fit and sound
When comparing models, focus on whether the shape fits you comfortably and stays in place during an ordinary listening session. For earbuds, check the included tip sizes and whether the model has a useful fit test. For over-ear headphones, make sure the cushions cover your ears without pressing or folding them. Consider how much isolation or ANC you need for the places you listen. These fit factors can guide a personal choice, but they do not establish a best brand or a universal sound ranking.
