For the best noise cancellation from AirPods Pro 3, start with a comfortable, secure seal: try the included ear-tip sizes, adjust how each earbud sits, and run Apple’s Acoustic Seal Test on a connected iPhone or iPad. If cancellation later seems weaker, check the selected noise-control mode and fit, then inspect and clean the earbuds.
Choose a comfortable ear-tip size for each ear
AirPods Pro 3 include five silicone foam ear-tip sizes: XXS, XS, S, M and L. If the earbuds still have their medium tips fitted, start there, then adjust each earbud until it feels comfortable and secure. Apple says a good seal helps sound quality and noise cancellation.
If a tip feels too large or uncomfortable, try a smaller size. If it does not seal well, try a larger one. Your left and right ears may need different sizes; there is no need to use a matching pair if a different combination feels better and seals well.

AirPods Pro 3 use Apple’s Acoustic Seal Test, not the older Ear Tip Fit Test name used for earlier Pro models. Apple’s tip-selection guidance specifies iOS or iPadOS 26 or later for this test.

Run the Acoustic Seal Test
- Connect AirPods Pro 3 to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings and select your AirPods. If they do not appear there, open Settings > Bluetooth, then tap the information button next to your AirPods.
- Select Test Acoustic Seal and follow the on-screen prompts.
- If the result recommends an adjustment, reposition the earbuds and run the test again. If it still recommends a change, try a different tip size and retest.
The test is a useful fit check, but comfort matters too. A result recommending an adjustment is a cue to reposition or try another size, not a reason to keep wearing a tip that feels uncomfortable.
Choose the noise-control mode for your surroundings
When your goal is to reduce surrounding sound, choose Active Noise Cancellation. Adaptive Audio responds to your surroundings, while Transparency lets environmental sound through. Check that the mode you want is enabled before troubleshooting a change in cancellation.

A poor seal can reduce noise cancellation even when the correct mode is selected. Apple also notes that debris or earwax can affect Active Noise Cancellation and other noise-control features. If performance changes, check both the fit and the earbuds’ cleanliness.
What to do if noise cancellation seems weak
- Confirm the mode. Make sure Active Noise Cancellation is selected if reducing surrounding sound is the goal.
- Recheck the seal. Adjust the earbuds and, if needed, run the Acoustic Seal Test again or try another tip size.
- Inspect and clean the earbuds. Debris or earwax can affect noise-control performance. Follow Apple’s AirPods cleaning instructions for the correct cleaning method.
- Check software and firmware. If fit and cleaning do not resolve the issue, follow Apple’s troubleshooting guidance to check for software and firmware updates.
- Reset, then seek service if necessary. Apple includes resetting the AirPods in its troubleshooting steps. If the issue remains after a reset, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider.
Fit and noise cancellation are not hearing protection
Apple says Hearing Protection effectiveness depends on fit, ambient sound and listening mode. It is not suitable protection against extremely loud impulse sounds such as gunfire, fireworks or jackhammers, or sustained sounds above 110 dBA. Do not rely on consumer noise cancellation or Hearing Protection as a substitute for appropriate protection in hazardous noise conditions.

Battery-life figures are published maximums
Apple lists up to 8 hours of listening on one charge with Active Noise Cancellation enabled, or up to 7.5 hours with Spatial Audio and head tracking enabled. These are Apple’s test-condition figures, not guaranteed real-world runtimes. Apple says testing used preproduction AirPods Pro 3 and iPhone 17 Pro units with prerelease software in July and August 2025. Actual battery life varies with settings and use.
