The best way to start Watch Dogs 2 is to scout first, hack the environment to create an opening, and only then decide whether Marcus should sneak, control a remote device, or fight. The game is built around changing an encounter before you enter it. Cameras, connected objects, vehicles, infrastructure, drones, and security systems can provide information or create distractions, while direct combat remains an option rather than a requirement.
This guide explains a reliable first-session routine without assuming a particular skill build or controller layout. It also shows how the game’s ghost, trickster, and combat-hacker styles fit together, how to recover when stealth fails, and when online activities become available.

What to understand before your first mission
Watch Dogs 2 is an open-world action game in which hacking is part of movement, stealth, and combat rather than a separate mini-game. Ubisoft’s overview presents Marcus Holloway as able to manipulate connected devices, vehicles, infrastructure, and security robots. That broad capability gives you options, but it does not mean every object or guard can be controlled in every mission. A target’s availability depends on the encounter and on the abilities you have unlocked.

- Preparation: create a distraction, disable or redirect a threat, or place a remote tool where it can help.
- Execution: move through quietly, operate remotely, or enter a direct fight if that is the safest remaining option.
You are not locked into one method. A quiet approach can become a combat approach after an alarm, and a combat-oriented player can still use cameras or a drone before pulling out a weapon. The practical goal is to preserve choices until you know what the area demands.
A first-session routine that works in most restricted areas
1. Stop outside the objective
Do not run directly through the nearest gate. Pause at the edge of the restricted zone and look for a safe position from which to observe. The exact best position varies by mission, but a few seconds spent outside often reveals more than entering blind.
2. Survey with cameras and remote views
Use available camera or remote-device views to inspect the compound before Marcus crosses the boundary. Mark the positions of guards, cameras, doors, vehicles, security equipment, and possible exits in your own mental map. If a drone or security robot is available and the mission permits access, use it to inspect areas that would expose Marcus.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThis scouting sequence is a practical recommendation based on the game’s documented hacking abilities, not a guaranteed solution for every encounter. Some locations limit which devices can be reached, and some targets require abilities you have not unlocked yet.
3. Identify an opening rather than a perfect route
You do not need to plan every step. Find one useful opportunity: a guard who can be distracted, a camera that can be used for a better view, a remote device that can reach the objective, or an exit that remains clear if the alarm sounds. Having one fallback is more valuable than trying to predict the entire patrol pattern.
4. Change the area before moving Marcus
Use a hackable object or person to create space, interrupt attention, or alter the route through the area. Ubisoft describes hacking as a way to manipulate connected objects and people; the safest application is to use that capability before Marcus is exposed. If a hack does not produce the opening you expected, stop and reassess instead of immediately sprinting forward.
5. Move between cover and keep an exit
Once the area is prepared, move through the gap you created. Stay aware of the route back to safety. A plan that works only if nobody reacts is fragile; a plan with a retreat path lets you recover from a mistake without turning every alert into a prolonged firefight.
How hacking supports stealth
Stealth in Watch Dogs 2 is less about memorizing a single route and more about controlling attention. Hacking can help you separate a guard from a group, alter what the guard can see, or give you another way around a blocked passage. The exact result depends on the object, the mission, and your unlocked abilities, so treat each hack as an experiment with a clear purpose.
Use hacks to distract
A distraction is valuable when it moves attention away from the path Marcus needs to use. Trigger a connected object or other available interaction, then move while the area is less focused on you. Do not assume that one distraction will hold everyone indefinitely; use it to cross a specific danger point, not as a permanent invisibility effect.
Use hacks to disrupt
Some hacks can interfere with a device, vehicle, or security element. The useful question is not “What can I hack?” but “Which available target reduces the immediate danger?” A target that blocks a camera’s view, interrupts a pursuit, or changes the position of a threat may be more useful than a visually impressive interaction that does not affect your route.

Use cameras as information tools
Remote camera access lets you inspect a room or courtyard before committing Marcus. Look for entrances, exits, guards, and objects that can be reached from another device. When you finish scouting, return control to Marcus only after you know where you intend to go next.

Use drones and security robots when the mission allows them
Ubisoft’s overview specifically includes drones and security robots among the devices that can be hacked. They can provide a safer way to gather information or interact from a distance, but access is not universal. Mission rules and unlocked abilities determine whether a particular device is usable. If a remote tool cannot reach the target, treat that as a signal to change the route rather than repeatedly forcing the same interaction.
A practical stealth workflow
- Observe: use a camera or remote view to understand the immediate room and the next transition.
- Choose one crossing: decide which doorway, gap, or piece of cover you will use first.
- Prepare attention: trigger a distraction or other environmental change that helps with that crossing.
- Move during the opening: advance only as far as the next safe position.
- Pause and rescan: once you reach cover, inspect the next section instead of relying on the previous plan.
- Withdraw when the situation worsens: use the exit you identified rather than gambling on an improvised dash through the center.
This rhythm prevents a common beginner mistake: treating stealth as one uninterrupted sprint. Short movements give you time to notice when a hack failed, a route is blocked, or a guard has not moved as expected. The game supports stealth, but the official material does not establish universal detection timings, so avoid building your plan around an exact number of seconds.
Choosing a play style without creating a rigid build
Ubisoft creative director Jonathan Morin described three broad approaches: “combat hacker,” “ghost hacker,” and “trickster hacker.” These are design styles, not character classes. You can combine them from one mission to the next and even within one encounter.
| Approach | What it emphasizes | Beginner guidance | Typical recovery when it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost / stealth | Avoiding notice, using cover, and creating gaps with distractions | Scout first, separate attention with a hack, and move only as far as the next safe position | Break line of approach, retreat to cover, and rescan instead of forcing the original route |
| Trickster / remote | Acting through cameras, drones, security robots, and other hackable devices | Inspect or interact from a safer position before Marcus enters danger; access depends on the target and unlocked abilities | Switch to another reachable device or bring Marcus closer only after identifying a fallback |
| Combat hacker | Combining active hacks with direct takedowns or combat | Use hacks to disrupt the encounter, keep an exit open, and treat weapons as one option rather than the first move | Interrupt the fight, reposition, and use the environment to reduce pressure before re-engaging |
The labels help you describe how you like to play, but they should not dictate every decision. A stealth player may need a direct takedown, and a combat-focused player benefits from remote scouting. Build around the situations you enjoy instead of trying to reproduce an allegedly mandatory setup.
What to do when stealth fails
An alert is not automatically a failed mission. First decide whether the current position is defensible. If Marcus is exposed in the middle of several threats, moving back toward cover or an exit can be safer than trying to defeat everyone immediately.
Interrupt the encounter
Use any available hack that can distract, disrupt, or reshape the immediate situation. Ubisoft and PlayStation’s descriptions support hacking as an active part of encounters, so an alarm does not remove the value of the environment. Do not expect every hack to work on every enemy or object; select a reachable target with a clear purpose.
Create distance
Direct combat becomes easier to manage when you are not surrounded. Move toward the exit or a defensible position, then reassess. Keeping an escape route in mind before the fight starts is one of the most useful habits for new players.
Use direct combat deliberately
The game permits direct combat, and choosing it is valid. Treat it as a decision rather than a punishment for playing incorrectly. If the objective is still secure and the area is too dangerous, withdrawing and approaching again may preserve more resources and options than continuing a chaotic exchange.

Can you finish Watch Dogs 2 without killing anyone?
Yes, nonlethal play is a supported option, although that does not mean every encounter is effortless or that combat never occurs. In a PlayStation Blog feature published June 24, 2016, Ubisoft creative director Jonathan Morin said: “Unlike in the original game, you can actually reach Watch Dogs 2’s finale without once using deadly force.”

- play co op and player vs. Player activities in a seamless shared world

That statement establishes a design possibility, not a promise that every mission has a simple nonlethal shortcut. You still need to manage detection, positioning, and failed plans. Use distractions, remote interactions, and nonlethal responses where the encounter makes them available, and be prepared to disengage when the situation becomes unsafe.
Morin also said, “The player has the freedom to play the way they want.” Read that as a description of the game’s intended flexibility: the same objective can support quiet movement, remote manipulation, or direct confrontation. It is not evidence that every object can be hacked or that every enemy reacts identically.
Skill upgrades: how to choose without an “optimal” list
The available official material does not establish a universally correct early skill order, confirmed prerequisites for every useful ability, or a single best build. Be wary of guides that present one shopping list as mandatory unless they specify the version and evidence behind it.
Instead, open each skill’s in-game description and choose upgrades that reinforce the way you are currently playing:
- If you prefer ghost play, favor descriptions that improve your ability to avoid notice, create distractions, or move safely through guarded spaces.
- If you prefer remote play, look for abilities that expand interaction with cameras, drones, security robots, or other devices you regularly encounter.
- If you prefer combat hacking, consider upgrades that help you interrupt encounters or combine hacks with direct takedowns.
Review the descriptions again after your first few missions. A skill that looked attractive before you understood the environment may be less useful than one that solves the problem you now encounter repeatedly. There is no need to spend points according to a community ranking that the official sources do not confirm.

Ubisoft Help states that online modes become available after you start the “A Walk in the Park” quest. The unlock is tied to beginning that story milestone, not to completing an unspecified number of side activities.
| Mode listed by Ubisoft Help | What the listing tells you |
|---|---|
| 2 Player Co-op | Cooperative play for two players |
| 4 Player Party | Party play for up to four players |
| Bounty Hunter | An online mode listed separately from the cooperative options |
| Hacking Invasion | An online mode centered on hacking encounters |
| Online Racing | Competitive racing activity |
| Showd0wn | A separately listed online activity |
Online service availability can change by platform, region, maintenance status, or publisher support. If a mode does not appear after starting the quest, confirm that the game is updated, your platform account is connected, and Ubisoft’s current service-status information shows the relevant service as available. The unlock condition above comes from Ubisoft Help; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service years after release.

A compact checklist for every new objective
- Have I looked at the area from a camera or remote device?
- Where are the guards, cameras, objective, and nearest exit?
- Which reachable object can distract or disrupt the immediate threat?
- Can a drone or security robot gather information without exposing Marcus?
- What is my next piece of cover after I leave this position?
- If the alarm sounds, can I retreat instead of fighting in the open?
- Does my current skill selection support the approach I am using?
Following this checklist keeps hacking connected to a concrete decision. You are not trying to demonstrate every system in the game; you are using the systems that make the next move safer or more informative.
The simplest way to think about Watch Dogs 2
Start by treating the environment as part of your toolkit. Scout before committing, use hacks to make an opening, and move in short, deliberate stages. When stealth works, continue quietly. When it fails, use the same environment to interrupt the alert, create distance, or support a direct fight. Because the game supports ghost, trickster, and combat-hacker approaches—and because its finale can be reached without deadly force—you can choose the style that fits the encounter instead of forcing every mission into a single formula.
