Dragon Age: The Veilguard is no longer an upcoming release: EA launched it worldwide on October 31, 2024. If you want to start Dragon Age: Origins now, you can treat it as a complete older RPG and an introduction to the setting—not as proven mandatory preparation for The Veilguard.
How do you start Dragon Age: Origins?
Start from the main menu by selecting New Game. The official PC manual describes Origins as a story-focused, party-based fantasy RPG with tactical combat. Give character creation and the early tutorials time; the game expects you to learn how its party and combat systems work.

Character creation includes gender, race, and class. Race shapes your character’s physical traits and place in Thedas. Gender does not change stats or abilities, according to the manual, but can affect dialogue and plot details. There is no single required or objectively best choice; choose the character and play style you want to follow.

Which controls help with Origins on PC?
The manual documents these keyboard shortcuts for the PC version. They are not console controls; check the in-game control display for your platform.
| Action | PC key |
|---|---|
| Pause combat | Space |
| Select party members | F1–F4 |
| Highlight objects | Tab |
| Quick-save | F5 |
| Quick-load | F9 |
| Open the journal | J |
| Open inventory | I |
| Open tactics | Backslash |
Pausing is useful when a fight becomes difficult: you can stop the action, review the situation, and issue commands rather than relying only on rapid inputs. The manual’s controls and account information are legacy documentation, so they should not be treated as confirmation of current online, downloadable-content, or account requirements.

- Scalable combat options that let you decide the level of control you have over your party, including NPCs. Issue orders, set your own tactical AI, or take control of any party member to lead the charge.
- 6 possible playable preludes known as ‘Origin Stories’ which along with your play, define how your hero character will see the world, how it sees you and sets the tone for the entire story.
- Travel across the vast and varied lands of Ferelden; from the conspiratorial halls of the last great dwarven city, Orzammar, to the untamed snarls of the Korcari Wilds.
- Dragon Age: Origins will give you deep character customization options including: class, race, appearance, abilities, and equipment.
- At the heart of the storm sweeping across Ferelden. Decide the fate of nations, people and, ultimately, yourself. Just remember: for every choice, there is a consequence.
Do you need to play Origins before The Veilguard?
There is no basis in the cited official materials to say that Origins is required before The Veilguard. EA lists Origins, Dragon Age 2, Inquisition, and The Veilguard as separate games on its Dragon Age franchise page. Playing Origins can give you time in Thedas and experience with the series’ party-based role-playing, but the available sources do not establish a required play order or mandatory transfer of choices into The Veilguard.

EA’s October 31, 2024 launch announcement describes The Veilguard as a single-player RPG with a customizable protagonist, Rook, and Warrior, Mage, and Rogue classes. Players choose two companions for quests and can use an ability wheel to direct allies. Those are details about the newer game, not instructions for playing Origins.

What should you verify before buying or installing Origins?
Current storefront availability, regional access, edition contents, prices, and online-service status are not established by the official manual or launch announcement cited here. Check the current listing for your platform before purchasing, particularly if you want a specific expansion or downloadable-content package. The manual’s historical notes about EA accounts, registration codes, and online features do not confirm what is required or available today.
If your goal is to play Origins, verify the platform and precisely what the edition includes. If your goal is simply to begin The Veilguard, the sources here do not show that buying or completing Origins is necessary.
If you are starting The Veilguard instead
The Dragon Age Team’s launch-day starter advice is specific to The Veilguard: check settings and accessibility options, try different builds, explore for side quests and loot, and complete companion quests because they affect later stages. These recommendations should not be mistaken for an Origins tutorial.
