First, choose which DMZ you mean: the original Modern Warfare II DMZ Beta is downloadable now as a standalone experience, while a separate DMZ mode for Modern Warfare 4 is announced for October 23, 2026. If you want to play the original, search your platform store for “DMZ Beta” or use the installation options for Modern Warfare II. The new mode is not scheduled to launch until Modern Warfare 4 releases.
Which Call of Duty DMZ are you trying to play?
“DMZ” now describes two distinct extraction experiences. The original is the Modern Warfare II-era DMZ Beta. The other is a new mode announced for Modern Warfare 4, set in the Hajin Exclusion Zone. They have different installation routes and availability.

How do I download DMZ Beta?
Activision Support provides installation directions for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox consoles, Battle.net, Steam, and Microsoft Store on PC. Store interfaces and packaging can change, so use the current support instructions and the store for your platform rather than relying on old button-by-button directions.
- If you own Modern Warfare II: open its file-management options and locate the DMZ Beta installation. Activision says the Beta is included in the game’s installation options.
- If you do not own Modern Warfare II: search your platform’s digital store for “DMZ Beta” and install the standalone download.
- If you need the full platform-specific process: follow Activision’s Modern Warfare II installation and setup instructions, which cover consoles and PC storefronts.
Activision also says Modern Warfare II is available as a standalone title outside the main Call of Duty experience, with digital installation through the Call of Duty experience or directly from a platform store. You do not have to own Modern Warfare II to download the free-to-play DMZ Beta.

The original mode is an open-world, narrative-focused extraction experience. You choose missions or side objectives, explore for valuable items, and may encounter AI combatants or enemy Operators. The key decision is how long to remain: further exploration can mean more progress or loot, but you still need to survive long enough to reach exfiltration.
- Choose an objective. Faction missions and side objectives give your deployment a direction.
- Explore and adapt. Search for items and respond to combat or opportunities you encounter.
- Decide when to leave. Continue taking risks or head for an exfiltration point to get out.

The official deep dive says players can create multiple Operators in the FOB’s Active Duty menu. Each is described as having a backpack and loadout that persist across deployments, with traits available for customization. Experience earned in DMZ is also described as upgrading the FOB, unlocking stations, and ranking up Operators. Modern Warfare 4 and its DMZ mode are announced for October 23, 2026.
