To get walking directions without stairs, turn on Google Maps’ wheelchair-accessible route option. Google says it can return stair-free walking routes on iOS and Android where route data is available—but it is not a guarantee that every route or destination will be accessible.
How to turn on wheelchair-accessible walking routes
Google’s instructions, published October 17, 2023, describe this setting in the walking-directions route options:
- In Google Maps, request directions to your destination and select the walking mode.
- Tap the three-dot menu at the top of the directions screen.
- Open the route options and turn on wheelchair-accessible.
- Review the route Maps returns before you set off.
Menu names and placement can change as the app is updated. If the option is not where these instructions indicate, update Google Maps and check the walking route options again. Google says a wheelchair-accessible preference already selected for transit is also applied to walking routes. Google’s announcement describes the rollout on iOS and Android wherever the necessary data is available.

Google describes wheelchair-accessible walking routes as stair-free. That can help when stairs are the main obstacle, but the setting should not be read as a filter for every difficult walking condition: the announcement does not promise to avoid hills, busy sidewalks, or other obstacles.

Availability depends on route data. Google’s announcement says the option is rolling out globally where data is available, but it does not provide a complete country list or establish coverage for a particular city. A route shown in Maps is therefore guidance, not a universal guarantee that every segment or the destination itself is accessible.
How this differs from other accessibility features
Google Maps has several accessibility features that serve different purposes. The walking option selects a route; transit accessibility is a separate route preference; Accessible Places provides information about places and their facilities.

Google documents the transit workflow separately for Android and desktop. Those instructions concern transit directions, not the walking toggle. Google’s Accessible Places announcement describes place information, not stair-free route selection.
