You generally cannot install The Sims 4 on a Chromebook through any route that EA or Google officially documents. EA’s requirements list only Windows PCs and Macs, and Google’s official Steam for Chromebook (Beta) list includes The Sims 3 but not The Sims 4. The supported way to play is on a Windows PC or Mac that meets EA’s requirements. The rest of this guide explains why each Chromebook workaround falls short, what you can check on your own device, and what to do instead. The facts below reflect EA and Google support pages checked in early October 2026.

Why EA’s requirements rule out ChromeOS

EA’s Sims 4 system requirements page lists two platforms: 64-bit Windows 10 for PC and macOS 10.15 Catalina or later for Mac. ChromeOS does not appear anywhere on that page. EA’s download page also lists PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Epic as ways to get the game, but each of those is a separate console or PC storefront. None of them turns a Chromebook into a supported device.

The free base game does not change this. EA’s store page lists the base game at $0.00, but a free download still needs a supported platform and an EA account. Price has no bearing on whether your hardware qualifies.

The four routes people try on a Chromebook

Route Official status Is The Sims 4 on the official list? Main limitation
Windows PC or Mac Supported by EA Yes, these are EA’s listed platforms You need a PC or Mac that meets EA’s minimum or recommended specs
Play Store Android apps Only some Chromebooks have Play Store access Not stated; no Chromebook Android release is established Device-specific, and some Android apps do not work on some models
Steam for Chromebook (Beta) Beta, still in development Not listed; Google’s tested list includes The Sims 3 Selected hardware, a supported-device list, and title availability limits
Linux on Chromebook Development environment Not stated Google says hardware acceleration is not yet supported

Chromebook routes in detail

Play Store Android apps

Google’s guide to Android apps on Chromebook confirms that Play Store access depends on the device. Only some Chromebooks have it, and some Android apps do not work on some models. Nothing in the sources reviewed establishes a Chromebook Android release of The Sims 4, so a Play Store search for the game is not a reliable route.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Steam for Chromebook (Beta)

This is the closest thing to a Chromebook route that Google itself documents, but it does not confirm The Sims 4. Google’s Play Steam for Chromebook (Beta) page sets the minimum hardware at an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. The device must also appear on Google’s supported list, which Google says is subject to change. The tested-games list names The Sims 3 and not The Sims 4.

That gap is not proof that The Sims 4 cannot run on every qualifying Chromebook. It means Google has not listed or confirmed the game. Google also states:

“There are a few limitations, known bugs, and performance issues that impact gameplay and title availability since Steam for Chromebook (Beta) is still in development.”

Linux on Chromebook

Google’s Linux setup guide describes Linux on Chromebook as a development environment and states that hardware acceleration is not yet supported. Running a PC game in a Linux layer on a Chromebook is therefore not an officially documented route, and no EA support applies to it. Guides that promise playable frame rates through Linux or Windows emulation on a Chromebook are not backed by any official source.

Checking whether your Chromebook qualifies for Steam Beta

If you only want to see whether your device is eligible for Google’s beta, work through these checks:

  1. Confirm the exact model is on the supported device list linked from Google’s Steam Beta page. Models that meet the hardware minimums but are not listed will not qualify.
  2. Check the hardware: an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, at least 8 GB of RAM, and at least 128 GB of storage.
  3. Open the app launcher and look for a Steam installer. If it is not there, the beta is not available on that device.
  4. If Steam installs, remember that The Sims 4 is not on Google’s tested list. Treat the game as unconfirmed and expect that it may not be available or perform well.

Supported route: a Windows PC or Mac

If you want to play The Sims 4 with official support, you need a computer that meets EA’s requirements. The figures below come from EA’s system requirements page.

Account and connectivity

On a supported PC or Mac, you need the EA app client and an EA Account to install and register the game. An internet connection is needed for activation and for additional content and online features. EA says a persistent online connection is not required after installation. The EA app is part of the PC and Mac install path, and nothing in EA’s requirements suggests a Chromebook can run it. For account questions, EA’s Sims 4 FAQ hub is the primary source.

What to do if you only have a Chromebook

  • Use a Windows PC or Mac that meets the table above. This is the only route with EA support.
  • If you own a console or a PC, check the platform EA lists on its download page. Those options require their own hardware.
  • If your Chromebook qualifies for Steam Beta, you can test it using the checks above, but do not expect The Sims 4 to be a supported title on it.
  • Avoid unofficial emulators, compatibility layers, or Play Store Steam apps. None of them has an EA or Google compatibility commitment.
