Sharpness 1000 is a command-created over-level enchantment, not something you can obtain with an enchanting table, anvil, villager, or normal /enchant command. The correct command depends on your Minecraft Edition and Java version.

For Java Edition, use /give with the item-component syntax that matches your version. Bedrock Edition does not support creating a genuine Sharpness 1000 item through its standard commands.

Quick answer

On Java Edition 1.21.5 and newer, open the chat box and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
/give @s minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":1000}] 1

This gives the command executor one Netherite sword with Sharpness 1000. The @s selector means “self.” To give it to a specific player, replace @s with that player’s username or another target selector.

Use the command for your Java version

Minecraft Java changed the format used for item data in 1.20.5 and changed the enchantment component again in 1.21.5. Copy the command for the version you are actually running.

Java version Command
1.21.5 and newer
/give @s minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":1000}] 1
1.20.5 through 1.21.4
/give @s minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={levels:{"minecraft:sharpness":1000}}] 1
1.20.4 and older
/give @s minecraft:netherite_sword{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:sharpness",lvl:1000}]} 1

What changed in Java 1.21.5?

Before 1.21.5, the enchantment component used a nested levels object:

enchantments={levels:{"minecraft:sharpness":1000}}

In 1.21.5, the levels are written directly inside the component:

enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":1000}

That is why the 1.20.5–1.21.4 command can fail when pasted into 1.21.5 or later.

How to run the command in Java Edition

  1. Start Minecraft Java Edition and load the world where you want the sword.
  2. Make sure commands are allowed.
  3. Press T to open chat.
  4. Paste the command for your Java version.
  5. Press Enter.

The sword should appear in your inventory. If you used @s, you must run the command yourself from chat or a command block executing as you. If you use a player name, check its spelling and capitalization.

Temporarily enable commands in an existing single-player world

You do not need to permanently enable cheats in Java single-player. From inside the world:

  1. Press Esc.
  2. Select Open to LAN.
  3. Set Allow Cheats to On.
  4. Click Start LAN World.
  5. Open chat and run the appropriate /give command.

This permission is temporary. After you leave and reopen the world normally, you generally need to repeat the process.

Java multiplayer servers

On a multiplayer server, you need operator status or another permission that allows /give. Ordinary players cannot run the command merely because they know its syntax. If the server rejects it with a permissions message, ask an administrator or use a world where you have command access.

Why /enchant does not work

A frequently suggested command is:

/enchant @s minecraft:sharpness 1000

This does not bypass the normal enchantment limit. The /enchant command applies an enchantment to the item currently held by the target and checks the normal level, item compatibility, and enchantment conflicts. Sharpness 1000 is rejected because it exceeds the vanilla maximum.

Use /give on Java instead. It creates an item whose enchantment component contains the over-level value directly.

What happens if the command fails?

You used the old curly-brace command on Java 1.20.5 or newer

This format is for Java 1.20.4 and older:

/give @s minecraft:netherite_sword{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:sharpness",lvl:1000}]} 1

Java 1.20.5 moved item data into square-bracket components. On that version and later, use one of the component commands in the table instead.

You used the nested levels form on Java 1.21.5 or newer

Replace:

[enchantments={levels:{"minecraft:sharpness":1000}}]

with:

[enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":1000}]

You ran the command without permission

Enable cheats in a Java single-player session, open the world to LAN with cheats enabled, or obtain operator permission on a server. A syntactically correct command still fails if the command executor is not allowed to use /give.

You pasted the command into Bedrock Edition

Java and Bedrock use different command systems. Java’s item-component expression, such as [enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":1000}], is not a Bedrock method.

Can you get Sharpness 1000 in Bedrock Edition?

No—not through standard Bedrock commands. Bedrock’s current /give structure is:

/give <player> <itemName> [amount] [data] [components]

Bedrock components use JSON in the components argument and do not use Java’s square-bracket enchantment syntax. More importantly, Bedrock does not provide Java’s over-level /give behavior for creating a genuine Sharpness 1000 enchantment.

From the world list, select the pencil-shaped Edit icon beside the world, choose Game, and turn on Allow Cheats if you need to use supported Bedrock commands. Enabling cheats disables achievements for that world.

A command that applies Strength to a player holding a sword is not a workaround. It applies an entity status effect, not Sharpness data to the item. The sword itself will not contain Sharpness 1000.

Why survival methods cannot produce it

Sharpness 1000 is outside the normal enchantment rules. The enchanting table, anvil, villager trades, and regular /enchant use normal level limits and compatibility checks. Combining Sharpness books in an anvil does not let you keep doubling the level to 1000.

On Java, the over-level sword must be created with command-generated item data, such as the version-specific /give commands above. On Bedrock, you need a compatible add-on, behavior pack, or external editor if you want to experiment with an equivalent custom item; that is not the standard command method and may not create a normal Sharpness enchantment.

Useful command variations

To give the sword to a named player on Java 1.21.5 or newer:

/give Alex minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":1000}] 1

To give one sword to every online player:

/give @a minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":1000}] 1

For Java 1.20.5–1.21.4, keep the same target and item but use the older nested component:

/give Alex minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={levels:{"minecraft:sharpness":1000}}] 1

The final 1 is the quantity. Change it to another positive number if you want multiple swords.

FAQ

Does Sharpness 1000 work in Minecraft Java Edition?

Yes. Java Edition can create it with a version-appropriate /give command, provided commands are enabled and you have permission to use them.

What is the Sharpness 1000 command for Java 1.21.5?

Use /give @s minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":1000}] 1.

What is the command for Java 1.20.5 to 1.21.4?

Use /give @s minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={levels:{"minecraft:sharpness":1000}}] 1. The levels wrapper is required in those versions.

Can I use /enchant to get Sharpness 1000?

No. /enchant enforces the normal enchantment level and refuses level 1000. Use Java’s /give command instead.

Can Bedrock Edition get a real Sharpness 1000 sword?

Not with standard Bedrock commands. Bedrock’s /give syntax and item components differ from Java, and it does not support Java’s over-level enchantment behavior.

Do I need cheats enabled?

Yes. In Java single-player, temporarily enable them through Esc → Open to LAN → Allow Cheats: On → Start LAN World. On a server, you need operator or equivalent command permission. In Bedrock, enable Allow Cheats in the world’s Game settings.

The Bottom Line

For Java 1.21.5 and newer, run:

/give @s minecraft:netherite_sword[enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":1000}] 1

Use the nested levels syntax on Java 1.20.5–1.21.4, the legacy NBT syntax on 1.20.4 and older, and do not use these Java commands in Bedrock Edition.
