To improve uneven skin tone, first identify and address what is causing it, protect your skin from further darkening, and keep your routine gentle. Dark patches can follow acne, eczema, injury, irritation, medication effects or hormonal changes; melasma is another possibility. Lighter patches have different causes and should not be treated as dark spots. Because similar-looking discoloration can need different care, a dermatologist can assess patches that are unclear, persistent or changing.
Start by working out what kind of discoloration you have
Uneven tone is a visible change, not a diagnosis. Dark spots in darker skin tones often reflect post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: extra melanin left after inflammation or injury. A pimple, eczema or psoriasis, a wound, bite, burn, or irritating product can trigger a mark. Hormonal changes and some medications may also contribute. Addressing the underlying condition or trigger can help prevent new marks and give existing ones a chance to fade. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) explains how to fade dark spots in darker skin tones.
Melasma can cause darker facial patches and may be associated with sunlight, hormonal changes, pregnancy, stress, medical conditions or some medications. These causes can resemble one another, so do not assume every patch is melasma or post-acne pigmentation. If a prescribed medicine might be involved, ask the prescriber whether it could be contributing and whether alternatives are appropriate; do not stop it on your own.
Lighter patches need a different approach. Several conditions can cause them, and treatment depends on the cause. The AAD advises getting light spots assessed rather than trying to treat them at home; see its guidance on treating light spots in brown or black skin.

A practical morning and evening routine
Morning: protect against more darkening
- Cleanse gently, or rinse. Use whichever leaves your skin comfortable. Avoid scrubbing.
- Moisturize if needed. A fragrance-free moisturizer can support comfort and the skin barrier; it is not itself a pigment-fading treatment.
- Apply tinted sunscreen. Choose broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and check the ingredient list for iron oxides. A tinted formula with iron oxides helps protect against visible light that can contribute to darkening, particularly with melasma and in darker skin tones. Select a shade and texture you will use consistently. For label basics, see the AAD’s guide to decoding sunscreen labels.
- Reapply outdoors. The AAD recommends reapplying about every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating, following the product label. Shade, a hat and protective clothing add coverage.
Evening: cleanse gently and choose at most one active to start
- Remove sunscreen or makeup without scrubbing. Use a gentle cleanser.
- Moisturize as needed. Keep the routine comfortable rather than adding products for their own sake.
- If appropriate, introduce one over-the-counter active gradually. The AAD lists azelaic acid, glycolic acid, kojic acid, retinoids and vitamin C as possible ingredients for dark spots. There is no established head-to-head ranking here that makes one the best choice for everyone. Avoid starting several potentially irritating products together. If a product burns or stings, stop using it; irritation can cause or worsen dark marks. The AAD’s dark-spot guidance covers these ingredient options.
How to choose and use products safely
- Favor gentle, fragrance-free care. If a new product causes burning or stinging, stop it rather than trying to push through irritation.
- Be especially cautious with retinoids. They may help some people with mild pigmentation irregularities, but irritation can itself trigger marks. The AAD quotes board-certified dermatologist Sonia Badreshia-Bansal, MD, FAAD: “With skin of color, irritation can trigger dark marks, known as hyperpigmentation.” If you use a retinoid, introduce it gradually and seek clinical advice if you develop significant dryness, redness or inflammation, or are unsure it suits you. The AAD says retinoids should not be used during pregnancy. Its overview explains the differences between a retinoid and retinol.
- Do not self-prescribe prescription treatments. Hydroquinone and combination creams are treatments to discuss with a clinician. In its U.S. guidance, the AAD says hydroquinone is no longer available in products that can be bought without a prescription; availability and rules can differ by location and change over time. The AAD’s melasma diagnosis and treatment guidance describes clinical care.
- Avoid liquid bleach and unverified lightening products. The AAD reports that some imported skin-care products have been found to contain undeclared steroids or mercury. It recommends choosing products made in the United States or recommended by a dermatologist; country of manufacture alone does not prove a product is safe. Review the AAD’s advice on fading dark spots.
How long fading may take
The AAD gives a general estimate of 6 to 12 months for a spot only a few shades darker than a person’s natural skin tone to fade after its cause has stopped. Deeper discoloration can take years. This is not a guaranteed result or a trial-derived average; time depends on the mark and whether its trigger has been addressed. Sun protection and avoiding further irritation help reduce the chance of additional darkening while you wait.

Arrange an assessment if you cannot tell what is causing the discoloration, patches persist despite gentle care and sun protection, irritation continues, you may need prescription treatment, or the areas are light rather than dark. Seek assessment for changing patches as well. A dermatologist can examine the skin and may use a Wood’s lamp or dermatoscope; a biopsy may be considered in some cases to rule out another condition. The AAD outlines how melasma is diagnosed and treated.
