Turn the controls off, let the cooktop cool, and start with a soft cloth or sponge, mild soap, and water—unless your model’s manual says otherwise. A cloudy white film may be mineral deposits, food residue, metallic-looking marks, or dried cleaner; it is not automatically permanent damage or a hard-water stain. For a likely mineral stain, Thermador recommends undiluted white vinegar on a soft, clean cloth. For stuck residue, Whirlpool recommends a scraper made for ceramic glass followed by compatible cooktop cleaner.
Why an induction cooktop can look cloudy or white
The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Evaporated water or cooking liquids can leave mineral deposits; GE says these may appear as metallic-sheen marks. Thermador also identifies minerals in some water as a cause of hard-water stains. Food residue and dried cleaning spray are other possible sources of haze.
A persistent mark is not proof that stronger chemicals or harder scrubbing will help. If gentle, model-approved cleaning does not change it, the surface may be scratched, etched, or otherwise damaged rather than covered by removable residue.
Clean it in a safe sequence
- Check the manual and switch off the controls. Let the surface cool, then check the instructions for your exact model. Some cooktops have special coatings or restrictions on cleaners and tools.
- Try soap and water first. Unless the manual directs otherwise, wipe with mild soap and water using a soft cloth or sponge. Dry with a clean, soft cloth and inspect the area.
- For a likely hard-water stain, consider vinegar only if permitted. Thermador recommends undiluted white vinegar on a soft, clean cloth. This is not a universal instruction for every cooktop, so follow your appliance manual.
- For stuck food or residue, use a ceramic-glass scraper as directed. Whirlpool describes using a scraper designed for ceramic glass while the surface is warm but not hot to the touch, held at about a 45-degree angle. Let the cooktop cool before applying cleaner. Use your model manual’s temperature guidance if it differs.
- Apply compatible cooktop cleaner. Use a small amount of ceramic-glass cooktop cleaner on the affected area and the specified cleaning pad if approved for your model. Follow the label and manual. Whirlpool’s method lets the cleaner dry to a white haze, then polishes it with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel.
- Stop if the haze does not change. Do not keep escalating to abrasive methods. Contact the manufacturer if you suspect scratching, etching, or other surface damage.
Choose an approach based on the mark
| What you suspect | Approach supported by the guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Mineral or hard-water stain | Undiluted white vinegar on a soft, clean cloth | Thermador recommends this for hard-water stains; check that your cooktop’s manual permits it. |
| Stuck food or residue | Purpose-made ceramic-glass scraper, then compatible cooktop cleaner | Whirlpool describes a scraper angle of about 45 degrees and use while warm but not hot to the touch; follow the exact model’s instructions. |
| General film of uncertain cause | Start with mild soap, water, and a soft cloth or sponge | Use this first unless the manual gives different directions; dry and check whether the appearance changes. |
| Haze unchanged after careful cleaning | Stop scrubbing and seek manufacturer guidance | The manufacturer instructions reviewed do not establish a universal remedy for persistent haze. |
What not to use—and how to prevent new marks
Whirlpool’s induction-specific guidance says not to use steam cleaners, steel wool, abrasive powder cleansers, chlorine bleach, rust remover, or ammonia. Avoid hard scrubbing and unapproved pads or blades; an arbitrary blade is not a substitute for a scraper designed for ceramic glass. Follow cleaner labels as well as your cooktop manual.
