The black box around an iPhone icon is usually VoiceOver’s focus outline: it marks the item currently selected for spoken navigation. If you do not need VoiceOver, turn it off at Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver. If you rely on VoiceOver, Apple documents no setting to hide the outline while keeping the screen reader on; its Large Cursor option only makes the outline larger and thicker.
What the black box means
VoiceOver is iPhone’s screen reader. Its outline shows which on-screen item VoiceOver has selected, so the phone can announce that item and let you interact with it. The outline alone does not mean the display is damaged.
Apple’s VoiceOver settings guide describes Large Cursor as an option for enlarging and thickening the outline around the selected item. It does not document a control for hiding that outline while VoiceOver remains enabled.
Turn VoiceOver off if you do not need it
If VoiceOver was enabled accidentally and you do not use it to navigate your iPhone, open Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver and turn VoiceOver off. Apple also documents other ways to switch it off:

- Siri: Ask Siri to turn VoiceOver off.
- Control Center: Use the VoiceOver control if you have added it to Control Center.
- Accessibility Shortcut: Use the shortcut if VoiceOver is configured for it.
VoiceOver changes how you operate the phone. Apple notes in its VoiceOver tutorial that, when VoiceOver is on, you must use VoiceOver gestures. If you depend on the screen reader, do not turn it off just to remove the outline.
If you want to keep VoiceOver on
Keep VoiceOver enabled and use the outline as its focus indicator. In Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver, Large Cursor can make the outline larger and thicker if it is difficult to see. It does not remove it. Apple’s reviewed settings guide does not identify another control that hides the focus outline while retaining VoiceOver.

Do not confuse the outline with Screen Curtain
Screen Curtain is a separate VoiceOver feature that turns off the display while the iPhone remains active. It blanks the whole screen; it does not hide only the box around an icon. To toggle it while VoiceOver is on, triple-tap the screen with three fingers. If Zoom is also on, quadruple-tap with three fingers. See Apple’s Screen Curtain instructions.

Why the rotor will not remove the box
The VoiceOver rotor changes navigation and VoiceOver behavior. Apple’s rotor guide does not present it as an outline-visibility setting, so changing rotor options is not a fix for this box.

If the settings look different
Menu labels can change between iOS versions. To check which version is installed, open Settings > General > About, then consult the Apple guide for that version.
