A Tom’s Guide writer reports that a 30-minute spot treatment with 3% hydrogen peroxide removed a yellow mark they attributed to retinol before laundering the pillow. That is one person’s result, not proof the method works on every fabric or stain. Check the care label and test an inconspicuous area before trying it.
How to try the reported pre-wash treatment
- Check the care label. Confirm that the pillow or pillowcase can be washed as directed. Do not use peroxide if the label or a spot test indicates it could damage the fabric or color.
- Spot-test first. Dab a little 3% hydrogen peroxide on an inconspicuous area and check for color change or damage. Wear gloves, and do not mix peroxide with other chemicals.
- Treat the mark. If the test is safe, dab a small amount of peroxide onto the yellow patch with a light-colored cloth. The Tom’s Guide writer left it for 30 minutes, then worked it into the fabric with an old toothbrush.
- Launder according to the label. The writer machine-washed the pillow after treatment. Follow your item’s care instructions instead of assuming every pillow can go in a washing machine.
- Check before drying. If the stain remains, do not put the item in the dryer: heat can set stains. Follow the care label and choose a fabric-safe stain treatment rather than repeating a treatment that risks damage.
The reported outcome—removal of the yellow ring and a brighter-looking pillow—comes from the writer’s experience. It was not a controlled or replicated test, and the article does not establish effectiveness for older stains or across different fabrics and colors. The American Cleaning Institute’s general advice is to treat stains promptly, blot rather than rub, use a suitable prewash stain remover or liquid detergent, and launder according to fabric-care instructions. That guidance is not a test of those products on retinol stains.
Why a pillow may turn yellow
A yellow patch alone does not identify its cause. Retinol is an over-the-counter type of retinoid, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, but the Tom’s Guide account does not show that all retinoid products or formulations affect textiles the same way. Pillow yellowing can also result from accumulated oil and moisture.
Check the ingredients of the skincare product and consider the stain’s history before treating it as retinol. A different acne ingredient, benzoyl peroxide, can cause rusty-yellowish bleached spots on fabric. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says this bleaching damage cannot be removed; it is not the same as a removable surface stain.

When not to use peroxide
- Dark-colored fabric: Peroxide may affect color. Avoid it if the care label warns against it or your inconspicuous-area test shows a change.
- Delicate textiles: The Tom’s Guide article cautions against using peroxide on materials such as silk, wool, and cashmere. Follow the textile’s care instructions and use only a compatible treatment.
- Unwashable or uncertain items: Do not assume a pillow can be machine-washed. Follow its care label; if peroxide or washing is unsuitable, choose a fabric-safe pretreatment recommended for that textile.
- Any treatment involving other chemicals: Do not mix hydrogen peroxide with other products.
What the method does—and does not—establish
The specific method is 3% hydrogen peroxide applied as a pre-wash spot treatment for 30 minutes, followed by laundering. The 30-minute timing is the writer’s procedure, not a tested optimum. The available evidence does not compare peroxide with detergent or oxygen bleach for retinol stains, so there is no established best treatment for every pillowcase.
