To make podzol in Minecraft, plant four spruce saplings in a 2×2 square and grow them into a large spruce tree. Podzol forms around the tree’s base as it grows; bone meal can speed up growth but isn’t required.
Make podzol with a large spruce tree
- Get four spruce saplings.
- Place them in a 2×2 square. Set each sapling in an adjacent block so they form one larger planting.
- Grow the tree. Wait for the saplings to grow, or use bone meal to speed up growth.
- Collect the podzol. The large spruce generates podzol around its base, and the tree also provides spruce wood.
This four-sapling method is described in the Minecraft tree-farming guide and the mushroom-farming guide. The sources do not establish one exact maximum podzol patch size that applies across editions, so check the layout in your game version rather than relying on a fixed footprint.
Find podzol naturally instead
Podzol can also be found in old-growth taiga and bamboo jungle biomes. Minecraft Help describes old-growth spruce taiga as having podzol and coarse dirt on the ground, with giant spruce trees characteristic of the biome. Growing a large spruce requires four saplings and enough space for the tree. Finding natural podzol means locating a suitable biome, but it can be a practical route if you already have access to one.

Move podzol without losing the block
Use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch to mine naturally generated podzol and carry the block elsewhere. Without Silk Touch, it drops as dirt, according to the Podzol reference.
Use podzol for mushrooms
Mushrooms can be placed on podzol regardless of light level, which makes the block useful when growing huge mushrooms. A large spruce setup can therefore provide both podzol and the basis for a mushroom-growing area; the mushroom-farming guide describes this use.
