For clothes, carpet, and upholstery, let Play-Doh dry completely, loosen it with a stiff-bristled brush, and vacuum or lift away the pieces. If residue remains, Hasbro advises gentle soap and cold water, repeating the steps as needed. Do not use hot water or cleaning solutions on fabric or carpet. Hasbro’s guidance does not cover hair, so there is no hair-removal method supported by the cited instructions.
Get Play-Doh out of clothes and washable fabric
- Let it dry completely. Avoid trying to wash or scrub the compound while it is still soft.
- Brush off the dried material. Use a stiff-bristled brush to loosen it from the fabric.
- Use gentle soap and cold water if residue remains. Hasbro says the process may need to be repeated until the residue is removed.
Hasbro’s instructions do not specify washing-machine settings or address delicate and dry-clean-only garments. Check the garment’s care label before washing, and follow its restrictions. Hasbro’s warning for fabric is explicit: “When attempting to remove Play-Doh compound do NOT use hot water or cleaning solutions of any kind.” Hasbro Consumer Care published and updated this guidance on June 5, 2023.
Remove Play-Doh from carpet and upholstery
- Wait until the compound is completely dry.
- Loosen it with a stiff brush. Work the dried material free without applying cleaning solution.
- Vacuum the loosened pieces. Hasbro’s instruction sheet includes vacuuming as part of the carpet-and-fabric cleanup sequence.
- For remaining residue, use gentle soap and cold water. Repeat the steps if needed.
Do not use hot water or cleaning solutions on carpet or upholstery. The advice applies generally to these surfaces, but it does not establish how every fiber, dye, or upholstery material will react. Follow care instructions for the item. Hasbro’s Creativity Table instruction sheet, copyright 2005, also describes the dry, brush, vacuum, and gentle-soap/cold-water sequence.

The cited Hasbro instructions cover carpet, upholstery, and fabric—not human hair. They do not establish a hair-removal technique, so do not treat oils, solvents, hot water, scissors, or a particular comb as Hasbro-recommended solutions. If you need to act, avoid applying a product or using a cutting method based on these fabric instructions; they are not written for hair.

Why drying first matters
Hasbro’s method starts with fully dried compound, then loosens it with a stiff brush. The sequence is important: the guidance does not recommend hot water or cleaning solutions for these surfaces. It also does not promise removal in a single pass; repeat the steps if residue remains.
