You can steer Google Search toward results that better match your question, compare personalized and non-personalized results for one query, and inspect why a page appeared. None of these controls guarantees a particular ranking or proves that a result is true. For consequential claims, check the original source and corroborate it.

How to narrow a Google search to what you need

Start by describing the subject in the words a useful page is likely to use. Add a place name if the answer depends on location, and put quotation marks around a phrase only when its exact wording matters. Google can match related terms, so quoting every word may exclude relevant pages that express the idea differently. Google’s search tips and Advanced Search describe these options.

Add exclusions or limit the site

  • Put a minus sign directly before a term to exclude results containing it, such as jaguar speed -car.
  • Use -site:example.com to exclude a domain, or site:example.com to search within a domain.
  • Use Search Tools or Advanced Search to narrow by date and other available criteria.

These operators change which candidate pages are surfaced; they do not establish whether those pages are accurate.

How to understand why a result appeared

Open the More menu beside a result and look for “Your search & this result” or the available “About this result” panel. Depending on the result and feature availability, Google may show information such as how query words or related terms matched, links, language, location, or publication-date context. Google describes these panels in its About this result help page and its explanation of information about results.

Use that information to assess relevance and provenance—for example, whether the page appears to match your query or whether its date is useful. It is not a fact-check verdict, and a match explanation does not validate a page’s claims.

How to compare personalized results for one search

When Google offers “Try without” in the results-page footer, select it to compare a non-personalized version of that query. This is a per-search comparison, not a change to your account settings. Google says the results can remain similar if personalization did not materially change their order. Google’s personalization help explains the option.

If two people see different results, that alone does not show that personalization caused the difference. Google also lists factors such as location, language, device, current query context, and changes to ranking systems. Google says, “Not all search results are personalized.”

How to turn Search personalization off

If you want to change personalization beyond a single comparison, Google Help describes Personalized Recommendations for signed-in users and Search customization for signed-out users. The labels and instructions may differ: Google notes that it is updating Search services settings, so the described controls may not match every person’s experience. Check the current personalization settings guidance for the option shown in your Search experience.

Turning personalization off does not make Search context-free or erase stored account activity. Location, language, device, and the query itself can still influence results. Manage or delete stored activity separately through the relevant Google account controls if that is your goal.

How Preferred Sources can shape what you see

Google’s Preferred Sources feature lets people select publishers to prioritize in supported Search experiences. Google announced labels for those sources in AI Overviews and AI Mode on May 27, 2026, and said people were twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source. That is Google’s reported behavior figure, not independent evidence that selected sources are more accurate. Google’s announcement describes the feature.

On August 20, 2026, Google reported that more than 600,000 unique Preferred Sources had been selected. That is a usage count, not a measure of trustworthiness. Availability and the precise experience may vary; treat a preferred-source label as a way to surface publishers you chose, not as Google certifying their claims. Google’s later update gives the newer figure.

How to check whether a result deserves your trust

Search can help you find and assess material, but the ranking, matching clues, and source labels cannot replace verification. Google notes that its systems do not understand content the way humans do. For a consequential claim, use the result as a lead and check the underlying evidence directly.

  • Open the original document, data, study, or official statement when available rather than relying only on a summary.
  • Check who published it, who wrote it, and whether the date fits the question.
  • Look for the evidence behind the claim and whether it supports the conclusion being drawn.
  • Corroborate important details with independent, relevant sources; multiple pages repeating the same unsupported claim are not independent confirmation.
