To get married in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, speak to Maramal in Riften, obtain and wear an Amulet of Mara, meet an eligible NPC’s individual requirements, then return to Maramal and attend the ceremony at the Temple of Mara.
1. Ask Maramal about marriage in Riften
Find Maramal at the Temple of Mara in Riften and ask him about the marriage custom. He may initially be at the Bee and Barb instead, so check there if you do not find him at the temple. This conversation introduces the marriage process and connects you with the person who arranges the ceremony. GameFront’s Skyrim guide notes both possible locations.
2. Get and wear the Amulet of Mara
Maramal sells the Amulet of Mara for 200 gold pieces, according to Prima Games. Equip it before speaking to a potential spouse: wearing the amulet enables marriage dialogue with eligible NPCs. Simply owning it is not enough.

The amulet does not make every character available for marriage. A potential spouse may require you to complete a favor, quest, or other prerequisite before the marriage conversation appears. Those requirements vary by character, and the cited guides do not establish a complete candidate-by-candidate list.

4. Propose, then arrange the wedding
With the amulet equipped and the NPC’s prerequisite satisfied, speak to that character and use the available marriage dialogue. Once the NPC accepts, return to Maramal to arrange the wedding. Prima Games and GameFront describe this sequence.
5. Attend the ceremony at the Temple of Mara
Go to the Temple of Mara in Riften for the ceremony. Follow the marriage quest objective and confirm your commitment during the service. Completing that ceremony is the final step in Skyrim’s single-player marriage process.

Skyrim’s Amulet of Mara is not the Pledge of Mara
These similarly named items belong to different experiences. Skyrim’s Amulet of Mara is worn to unlock marriage dialogue with eligible NPCs and leads to Maramal’s ceremony in Riften. Bethesda Support’s Pledge of Mara help article describes a separate multiplayer ritual: one player equips the Pledge of Mara and uses it at a Shrine of Mara to invite another player into the ritual. It is not the item or process used for Skyrim’s single-player NPC marriage.
