To watch free local broadcast TV on a Vizio Smart TV, connect an indoor or outdoor TV antenna to the TV’s antenna input, switch to the TV tuner, and run a channel scan. Which stations appear depends on local signal availability and antenna placement; an antenna cannot guarantee reception of every nearby station.
What you need to watch local TV without cable
Free over-the-air local broadcasts require a suitable antenna connected to a TV with a built-in tuner. The FCC says the right antenna may be indoor or outdoor depending on your location and reception conditions. Check local signal availability before choosing an antenna, and avoid relying on a promised channel count or range: reception varies by location and setup. FCC guidance on antennas and digital television explains the basics.
If you receive local stations through cable or satellite instead, use that provider’s equipment and input rather than the TV’s antenna tuner. The FCC notes that cable and satellite subscribers receiving stations through those services did not need to rescan for the frequency transition discussed in its 2019 notice.

How to scan for local channels on a Vizio TV
- Connect the antenna. Attach its coaxial lead to the Vizio’s antenna or cable input.
- Select the TV tuner. Change the TV’s input or source to its antenna/TV tuner source.
- Start a channel scan. Open the TV’s channel or tuner settings and choose the scan option. Menu names and button sequences vary by model and software, so use the manual for your specific Vizio if the labels differ. Vizio’s support portal can help locate model information.
- Let the scan finish, then check the saved channels. The tuner needs to complete the scan to build its channel list.
The available general Vizio support information does not establish one scan path that applies to every model. Do not assume a single set of menu labels works across all Vizio Smart TVs. If your model does not show a TV tuner or antenna option, check its manual or contact Vizio support; one model’s specifications do not establish tuner availability for every Vizio television.

Improve reception if channels are missing or unstable
Weak or changing reception is often a placement issue, but the result depends on local signals and the antenna. The FCC recommends trying these adjustments when reception is poor: FCC antenna guidance.
- Move an indoor antenna near a window.
- Try a higher location.
- Move the antenna away from electronics.
- Change the antenna’s direction and check reception again.
After changing the antenna’s position, run another scan so the TV can update its channel list. If stations still do not appear, confirm that the TV has a tuner and consult the model manual or Vizio support.

When to rescan channels
Rescan after moving the antenna if the saved channels no longer come in, or when a local station announces that it is changing frequencies. A station’s frequency change can require an over-the-air viewer to rescan for the TV to recognize it. The FCC explained this in a February 4, 2019 notice; its transition-specific assistance details are historical, but the rescan guidance remains relevant when a station changes frequency.
