Kubuntu 22.04 originally shipped with KDE Plasma 5.24.4. The historical opt-in route to Plasma 5.25 was Kubuntu’s ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports-extra repository, followed by a full package upgrade. Because this PPA and its Jammy packages may no longer be maintained or available, verify its current status before running the commands below.
What to know before upgrading
Kubuntu’s announcement described the backports-extra PPA as an opt-in way to get Plasma 5.25 on a long-term-support release. It explained that newer Plasma versions on an LTS release require an opt-in process: Kubuntu Team’s Plasma 5.25 announcement.
This changes more than a single desktop package. apt full-upgrade can install, upgrade, or remove packages to complete the dependency changes, so inspect the proposed transaction rather than treating it as a minor app update. Back up important data first and ensure adequate free disk space.

This historical procedure is appropriate only if the archive still targets Jammy and provides the intended Plasma 5.25 packages.

Check the PPA’s current availability
Before adding the archive, visit its Launchpad overview. Confirm that Jammy is listed as a supported series and that the Plasma 5.25 packages you need are published for it. If Jammy packages are absent, do not add the PPA or substitute packages built for another Ubuntu release.
Install Plasma 5.25 through the backports-extra PPA
- Confirm your release and update the existing system. Make sure the computer is running Kubuntu 22.04 (Jammy), then install available updates before changing repositories.
- Back up important files and check free disk space. A full upgrade can affect numerous system packages; retain a way to recover your data if the upgrade does not go as expected.
- Open Konsole and add the PPA. Run:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports-extra - Run the full package upgrade. Then enter:
sudo apt full-upgrade -y - Review the package transaction. The
-yoption automatically answers yes to prompts, so pay particular attention to the proposed package changes and any removals before proceeding. If the plan includes unexpected removals or held packages, stop and investigate instead of accepting it. - Reboot after the upgrade completes. Then check the Plasma version in System Settings or run
plasmashell --versionin Konsole.
Kubuntu published these two commands together in its announcement. Running them on separate lines, as shown, makes it easier to inspect the output after adding the repository and before starting the package upgrade.

Use Discover or remove the PPA
Kubuntu’s repository guidance describes adding a PPA from its Launchpad overview when using Discover. To remove a previously added archive, open Settings → Software Sources → Other Software and remove its entry.

KDE recommends prebuilt packages as the easiest way to install Plasma 5; compiling from source is aimed at software developers: KDE’s build-from-source guidance. It is not the default route for a Kubuntu desktop user seeking this upgrade.
Ubuntu’s release notes state a five-year maintenance period through April 2027 for Ubuntu 22.04 desktop, server, and core, and three years for flavors: Ubuntu 22.04 release notes. That support-policy information does not establish whether the backports-extra PPA or its Plasma 5.25 packages remain available.
